Horrendous captaincy to bowl a spinner in the penultimate over when the batting team needs to hit 6s.
Yep

If Sams was able to choose a bowler that's who he would have gone for

I know Pope had bowled well earlier but that was a really dumb decision

We didn't need wickets at that point. Just bowl your least hittable bowler.

That was a vintage Redbacks/Strikers performance

Yeah that didn't end well.

Poor bloke was setup to fail, and he did so with aplomb.

It's a professional game and he didn't help himself but Short/Paine have to take some responsibility for the damage this will do to Pope's career. Poor blokes confidence would be shot.

He has a three year contract but last night will haunt him for a long time. Everyone playing in the BBL wants to perform to get a spot in other leagues around the world.

I doubt the plan was to bowl Allen. Boyce, Bazely and Overton still had an over.

Was a very strange decision to bowl him I agree.

Feel for the bloke TBH.

The choices for the 19th over were Short, Boyce, Pope, Bazely, or Overton with someone else bowling the last.

In hindsight, Adelaide needed to end it before the 20th and Overton would have been the best choice.
Further on this, and focusing strictly on the bowling choices. I think the big issue is that the Strikers fooled themselves into thinking they were further ahead in the game than they were. In T20 if it's a close game, and you know you have to get one over out of a terrible/unsuitable bowler you always leave it as late as possible (ie. the last over) and hope the good bowlers solve the problem for you before then.

If you stick to Overton bowling the 20th, then there's no good choice and I can kind of see how they ended up With Pope Bowling:

Short has bowled a last over defending a small total and immediately bowled 5 wides and it was game over.
Bazely went for 19 in his only over last night, and has a history of getting smashed around in death bowling situations.
Boyce is even slower and more predictable than Pope, I can't recall him failing badly at the death with the ball, but I do remember choked badly in a similar situation but with the bat in his double hattrick game.

I assume the plan was to have Pope bowl all his variations and hope Sams doesn't pick one, even if 1 or 2 go over the fence first.

The real brain genius move would have been to bowl a bad wide and encourage them to take an additional single.

I can see why they did it but it also comes down to list management and recruiting. Many have said our bowling stocks for crunch overs and power plays are a bit thin.

Buckingham is injured but couldn't make the best 11 at the Heat so not sure he fixes the problem and Doggett is fairly inexperienced in the BBL.

It was a problem last year at times so I'd like to know what the plan was going into the tournament.

Buckingham will play, no question

Putting aside the 31 run over. Boyce + Pope definitely feels like a luxury and/or gamble. And Thornton feels like he has problems between the ears that stop him being a good death bowler.

They've just grabbed another quick as Carey's replacement.

Is there any news on the severity of Allen's injury. Is the BBL still the sort of league where they have international players on speed-dial for short replacement spells like Ten Doeschate/Shakib Al-Hasan back in the day?

Golden rule of captaincy to use your best bowler in 19th rather than 20th.

Hope Short learnt his lesson for next time.

Fabien Allen is out for the entire tournament. Hope there's plans for a replacement, thats a huge gap in the squad. Lynn out with a calf too.

In positive news, Ollie Pope has arrived to keep/bat.

There will be someone floating around, plenty of Kiwis and Poms
