Anyone know why Richardson isn't playing in the Shield match?

Didn’t he have a minor hamstring complaint that caused him to miss the first one-day match? Hopefully they are just being cautious.

Interesting to see some of the young guys (Fanning, Wyllie) getting a go in the first Shield match. Lots of depth in the WA side. Probably one of the things they will have to manage the next couple of years is giving enough opportunities to everyone so that they don’t go interstate for more opportunities to play state cricket or BBL.

Seems like a tough deck to bat on, WA are currently 3-45 and going at 1.5 runs an over.

The young lads digging in nicely. I like the cut of their jib. Proper first-class cricketers: an improvement on a few in our squad who are much better with the white ball. With a full-strength squad, we'd be leaving some international representatives out of our Shield team.

Aaaand Fanning just dismissed :(

I've dazzlered myself.

He's a pretty handy lower order batsman.

Wyllie Coyote looks the goods, very impressive demeanour for an 18 year old.

Paris is an under rated batsman as well, WA has a decent tail.

Wyllie into the nervous 90s

I think Wyllie just broke the record for youngest ever century in the Shield

Patterson's record was 18 and 206 days
Wyllie is 18 and 163 days

Edit: Ponting was 18 and 40 days for his first century

Haven't seen today's innings - I'll check out the highlights later... but everything I've seen of Wyllie so far has been very impressive. I've been saying for about 12 months now the four big talents we need to nurture are Pucovski, Green, Sangha and Fraser-McGurk. I think Wyllie can be put in that category now.

You still back Pucovski?

It's touch and go right... Unless he retires CA will continue - and should continue - to pour money into his development. IMO he is still the #1 young batting talent in the country and we don't have loads of talent we can let go to waste. That being said I'm not sure you can consider him that young anymore - he turns 25 in the backend of the summer. Time flies eh!?! Regardless of his age when it comes to Puc, whilst it's not a complete lost cause, you gotta keep backing him in.

Of the players I mentioned, the biggest concern for me is Sangha. There were some signs of life at the end of 21/22 but he has started this one very slowly. Top tier talent but came into the FC system with a lot of pressure on him and early failures set him back a long way and he hasn't handled the pressure at all. At least with this early century, any external pressure on Wyllie will be gone for now - and he probably didn't come under as much as Sangha did to be fair. Sangha has only just turned 23 so it's not panic stations just yet, but it would be nice to see him get a move on and build on the momentum he gained at the end of last season.
