This one belongs in the strange and unusual deaths file, an Italian surfer was speared in the chest by a swordfish and died. That's got to be a one in a trillion event.

It's now reported it was not a swordfish, rather a needlefish, which I know as a Long Tom. A fairly small fish. There seems to be about a dozen deaths caused by needlefish that have been reported, From the wiki

Since needlefish swim near the surface, they often leap over the decks of shallow boats rather than going around. Their sharp beaks are capable of inflicting deep puncture wounds, often breaking off inside the victim in the process. After seeing former US President Jimmy Carter on his recent 100th birthday, I have to wonder - Have two doctors with a third doctor reviewing their findings actually carried out the series of standard tests to confirm whether he is still living or dead? Given his appearance that day, I'm not convinced whether President Carter actually meets the criteria for still being classed as alive. As I noted at the time, he looks like he was born in 1824 not 1924.
