Honestly its Collingwood then a huge gap. Without Anzac Day Essendon would be behind Carlton.

To summarise its Collingwood then a gap to Carlton, Essendon and Richmond making up the top 4.

Melbourne and Geelong are on the next level followed by Hawthorn and St Kilda.

Spot on.

Shows how fickle Hawthorn supporters are. There are plenty of them and they have proven they will sign up and turn up when things are going well but when things are down they are very very quiet.

they certainly sign up including their pets but they can not turn up.

hence the low crowd numbers:)

There are two basic errors in your post.

1. There is no "huge gap" between Collingwood and the rest of the 4. There is a gap but not huge at all. Collingwood are no more able to draw 70K when in the bottom half of the ladder than anyone else. You are blinded a bit by the fact that they have finalled in the past 4 years and of course in the top 4 playing 14 games at the G and Carlton and Essendon twice they will max out numbers but you have to look behind that headline.

Look at Collingwood at home in the second half of the season when all the marquee games are over and when in bottom 8.....not much better than Essendon or Richmond in similar circumstances !!!! Collingwood are biggest but any Big 4 club regularly in the top 4 will bust the block regardless. Look at Essendon a decade ago.

2. Essendon would not be behind Carlton without Anzac day. The first Collingwood V Essendon of the season would regularly draw 70K on an ordinary day - not the 90.000 holiday crowd but 72 to 75K would be normal. If you want to exclude Anzac day you have to exclude all the early season Carlton V Collingwoods as well. Do this and Essendon lead Carlton.

Ok so then how about this, WA has a population of around 2.3 Million and Victoria has a population of 5.5 Million. So with less than half your population we still get regularly 43K ( sell outs mind you ) @ Subiaco Oval and if we use an often used system of per/head of population we in fact have far greater turn outs ( ie: big crowds ) on a more regular basis.

But thats only because there's sweet FA else to do in WA.
Great scenery but nothing really for people to spend their hard earned $$$'s on. :(

Case in point - Round 1 double-header, March 20, 2008.

Carlton v Richmond - 15th & 16th the previous year - draws 72K to the MCG

Port Adelaide v Geelong - the Grand Final rematch with Port out for revenge on their home patch - draws 28K to AAMI

And half of those were probably brave Cats fans going over the border to gloat. 119 :thumbsu:

That stat just shows how much a sleeping giant Richmond are.

Carlton,Essendon-16 flags.
Collingwood-15

Us with lots of low periods with little periods of success yet our support is in the top 4.

Incredible loyalty and passion by our supporters.

BEST IN THE LEAGUE!
