And realistically when soligo is fit he’s going to spend time up forward too as part of that rotation.

It’s no wonder it’s hard for cook to get a look in

Am keen to hear more about Filthy being BOG.

Was he in the game a lot more than previously?

This one guy could elevate us single handedly - his attributes are so unique.
As bigman said, Filthy took a number of contested marks, one of them was a great pack mark, and I reckon he kicked 4 or 5 goals at the end of the day. He also held his own against Strachan and ROB in the ruck.

Rach impressed me today too and was very clean with his passes hitting up Tex a few times in the 1st.

Burgess looked ok but juggled a few easy marks and he would need to be cleaner than that in a real game.

Berry looked better than last year. Still a few wayward passes but much improved.

It was interesting how some of the yellow players, who had been quiet early, played better in the 3rd when they shuffled some better players in to help them.

Was good to see Muzz taking part in some of the drills. Looked like he was moving well and I wonder how sson he will be able to return.

Also Toby Murray looks a lot like Alex Keath.

Thanks bigman
Berry was my breakout player last year, maybe I was a year early, but I think he has to displace Crouch
Cleanhands I had berry as one of the best pre season trainers last year but for whatever reason he dropped off badly once the season started and looked frustrated for much of the year playing sanfl.

To my eye he has trained just as well if not better this summer so hopefully last year was just a dip. The issue for him is whether or not he gets a round one gig now that crouch is flying.

As for crouchy, if he was falling back into old habits I would have mentioned it but I can’t fault his pre season. He’s been excellent and deserves to play round one.

I'm confused as to what the plan is with Cook.
It seemed like we were going to develop him as the McAdam replacement. He's a guy that needs to really build his confidence. Yet we keep putting him on the B team where they don't kick a goal.
What's the plan?
I agree DJ, he was training really well most of the summer but has trailed off a bit no doubt as a result of playing in the B team during match sim and getting very little of the pill.

Obviously he is in charge of his own fortunes but I would’ve liked to have seen him get at least some time with the As today. Even gallagher did despite being super raw.

I'm just basing this on Bigmans reports not any highlight reels
Unfortunately for gollant he has historically been more of a cruiser during training and relies a lot on his game day performances to push for selection - and to be fair, he has been one of the better forwards in the sanfl the past two years.

Being out of contract I was hoping however that he would have approached the pre season with a bit more gusto than he has. And now his injury, whatever it is, won’t help his case.

I like how he competes at everything and he has goal smarts but I was hoping he would be hitting the season with more momentum.

bigman awesome reports, have you noticed much change in gameplan?
George always a bit hard to tell with opposing teams that know each other inside out.

One thing I have noticed is significantly less bombing of the ball from stoppage, instead players are releasing by hand more and encouraged to put speed on the game and take opponents on.

There’s also been less going long down the line, instead players have often looked laterally for options whether that’s boundary side or in the corridor even when being pressured. Typically, only if there’s nothing on offer do they go the ultra conservative route.

Obviously the pressure of real games and tougher opposition will be a test for the lads but we have a faster, smarter list than years previous.

I think it’s between those two for the same spot, and yes I would have Crouch ahead

Hey #bigman...
I listened to an AFL Fantasy podcast today which featured a longish interview with Rory Laird. Paraphrasing and shortening; he said that Crouch, Dawson and himself were the mainstay of the midfield with the usual list of others rolling through. I can't remember him mentioning Berry at all though.

Amongst other things he spoke at length about Ben Keays, who will not be in the middle much, if at all. He said his hard running makes him too valuable in the forward line as he runs hard to get into good areas all over that forward half of the ground.

He said that although Curtin has had a disrupted pre season, his skills are next level for his size. He didn't lock him into R1 though due to the disruption but he was hopeful.

Overall, he said that, although a cliche, he thought the team was in great shape to start the year and the training has been exciting to be part of.

...just like you said really. ;)

He attacks the contest and the player.

He tackles hard.

He’s a good kick. Good set shot.

Can take an absolute speccy.

I want to see Gollant in the 22 this year.

His goal sense, knowing when to try a shot for goal and when to pass off, isn't great. Doesn't have many tricks as a forward of his size. Doesn't seem a natural forward, but is a natural midfielder
You're probably right about his goal sense, though the results are mostly okay.

His size and power running is very good for a forward, as he has the defensive ability to get to contests and pressure, and the stamina to break and get into good position when we're rebounding.

I think he's better value as a forward than a mid, but that's just me.

Seems like a weird way to push his development along.

"Alright Cooky, go stand where the ball isn't!" followed by "You're not getting near it enough!"

Maybe he's just not that good, but I like him, and I don't get the lack of progress.
