It’s worse than that. He sucked as the sub against Port, then replaced Nank in the starting team even though Nank played very well against Port. They dropped him.
He played SANFL. Had a poor game first up and limped off. Had a good game two weeks later.
Then they immediately recalled him to AFL level.
He was dropped in July and never played again. They dropped him.

He's internally admired and we'll do everything we can to get him in.It’s worse than that. He sucked as the sub against Port, then replaced Nank in the starting team even though Nank played very well against Port.
Great. He was dropped in July and never played again.
No-one on this board wanted him .....can't give Crouch away ....Free to a good home, doesn't even have to be goodA player much younger who turned his career around?

Okay, well I guess we should be in full panic mode, but I'm still okay with the fact that we have Isaac Cumming, Mitch Hinge, Max Michalanney, Chayce Jones, Luke Nankervis, Rory Laird, Wayne Milera, Oscar Ryan and Hugh Bond all either equal or ahead of Brodie Smith in the queue.Great.
Why is that one the permanent one that all future decisions will follow but the one a handful of weeks prior is ancient history, never to be repeated?
The reason they were happy not to pick Smith and to experiment with the likes of Bond at the end of last season was because we couldn't make the finals.Okay, well I guess we should be in full panic mode, but I'm still okay with the fact that we have Isaac Cumming, Mitch Hinge, Max Michalanney, Chayce Jones, Luke Nankervis, Rory Laird, Wayne Milera, Oscar Ryan and Hugh Bond all either equal or ahead of Brodie Smith in the queue.
The last thing that happened was that he was dropped in July and never brought back, and I can't see him suddenly proving to the coaches that decision was wrong.

There are four canaries in the coalmine imho that will determine whether Nicks and this coaching crew will ever be successful
1) Whether Smith plays
2) If Laird is a starting centre square mid
3) Murphy at half forward
4) We play all four tall defenders
Those are the indicators for me.
As recently as a handful of rounds ago we would be 0/4 with these decisions, hence our dogshit season.
What internal analysis have we undertaken since 2024 finished? Has anything dawned on us? What perspective will Davis bring?
No Madgen at training so far. Has he left the club or is he injured or just scaling down training this year. Would like to know if anyone has any news. Unfortunately I don’t have any sources
Thanks Scorpus. He impressed me on field last year with his onfield leadership. Really strong voice and always encouraging others. Hope he is still around in 2025Madgen was involved with the women's program as a coach, maybe he's taking a break now that the season has concluded?
I don't think that is the alignment at all. That being part of the leadership group means you have the traits that should help you be selected. I think it is based on other factors that are important for the team, but not necessarily getting you into the 22. You know, selfless stuff that is for the good of the team! No, history shows that the people selected by the players to be in the leadership group are those most admired for the leadership they show in getting the best out of themselves and others.
That's a pretty good trait if you want to be selected.
You've got to give Matty some Kudos for making it happen. I love a good story like that.No-one on this board wanted him .....can't give Crouch away ....Free to a good home, doesn't even have to be good
Just saying ....this is not the first time this board has completely written off a player .....to then do a backflip
Smith will play but will play less than 5 gamesEhh, we dropped Ned permanently after we figured he wasn't going to fit into future calculations this year
It's a case-by-case basis. Not saying we definitely won't be tempted to bring back Smith, but I'd be leaning towards that outcome, especially with how much Nicks seems to rate Nank
That was the worst selection call of the seasonIt’s worse than that. He sucked as the sub against Port, then replaced Nank in the starting team even though Nank played very well against Port.

He really shouldn’t play at all though
Oscar Ryan comes first IMO.If Nankervis form drops, Cummins is a dud or injuries occur? Smith will quickly come back into contention.
Selection is more about reacting to the next spot fire, not long term planning.
Oscar Ryan comes first IMO.
Cummins plays cricket last time I checked.
Depends what point the injuries come. It's very unlikely Oscar Ryan will come first, without a serious run in the SANFL (or a white-hot preseason). After all, he didn't even crack our best 22 this year.
At this point, Smith is higher on the depth chart and once you're at the selection level, the depth chart is all that matters. We missed an opportunity to clear a roadblock for Ryan by giving Smith the nudge to retire at the end of last season.
