Hey, with the rain starting to thump down (and half the town getting blown away), any updates regarding possible ground changes?

The poor people at Cardiff, you have hardly had any "home games" at home. With this rain the CLOSED sign will probably be up very quickly at BE.

Over my dead body ... Last home game ... No way we are calling it off

Some great news overnight, Isaac Heeney from Cardiff has been selected in the AIS-AFL academy.

A great achievment for Isaac, who has been a mainstay in the Hawks senior team for two years now. Hard to believe he is still only 16 years of age. :thumbsu:

I heard a report that Garry Burkinshaw is leaving the AFL after September- can anyone verify that ?

He has been a great operator for NSW footy and will be sadly missed.
Good luck for your future endeavours Garry

Awesome news about young Heeney, Swan.
Unfortunately my friends at Morisset won't be giving any congratulations any time soon. Great to see the Junior Association (which Heeney no longer plays in) offering congratulations on their website.

They are too busy trying to hang Cardiff for playing at home on Saturday. Clearly they should have moved the games to No1 to give City more profit. I don't know what more Cardiff can do, over and above playing on an open ground, that the opposition cleared as playable.

Great news about Isaac. A pity the people in charge of running the website have chosen to overlook this significant achievement for a kid who has played all his footy at the Cardiff club. It would have been a great chance to say- here is a home grown kid who is at the moment one of the best 30 footballers for his age in the country in an area where AFL is a distant 4th code of choice. Another opportunity to get good news material out there that has been missed!

At least the AFL NSW/ACT website and Newcastle juniors have got it out there. I guess he will be close to retired by the time the NEAFL side gets off the ground in 2030 or whatever timeframe they have on it so he is of little interest to the league in that regard which might explain the lack of a story ;)

What are peoples thoughts about the twilight grand final? Will anyone go in to watch a game that will finish at 7pm or will this attract more people with the opportunity to go out for a few drinks after etc? Are they still playing time on in the lower grades? If they are I hope they amend a few times for the lower grades as there is no way the games will be finished in 2 1/4 hrs plus the presentation of medals etc and having the ground cleared on grand final day. Will be cutting it very fine if there is time on to be played.

Finally who is peoples tip for the Ben Hodges medal that Elliott Davey won last year? Have they managed to get Steve Allen to M.C. the night? An absolute professional who knows a bit about the league and makes sure the players and officials are the ones to be recognized. For what its worth Id go with O'Brien from Cardiff. Polled a few votes in the past and wins alot of the footy.

Agree with o'brien Cardiff as a major chance for Elliott davey award along with probably bishop terrigal or Stewart, Healy city. Can't see it coming from any of the lower teams

Hey Deitzy
Sent an article to local paper and BDAFL and no sign of it anywhere ... Very sad really. Isaac is a great kid and will be in Sydney playing next year for sure so it is the BDAFL and Newcastle loss. He is our next AFL footballer I believe.

Twilight football is ridiculous timing for your best footballers playing Finals and Grand Finals. Just think; people having to hang around all day to watch the best game of the day; likely to finish well after 7pm with 4 fully timed games on the day - should have taken a leaf out of the Foxtel cup and had time on for the last 3 minutes of the quarters - at least to bring the timing back a little; yellow footies; good lights needed at Bateau and No.1; City at a distinct advantage if they make the GF - home ground, training ground under lights, and a bit of dew on the ground - what more could we do for them to win - and someone at the BDAFL cannot see what all the fuss is about.

Still only 2 of the finals clubs outright rejected the move only to see them be ignored by the BDAFL :)

Elliot Davey - think O'brien is a good bet; also Polglase, Maybe Roachy and Drano has played some good footy for KV.
Div 1 - Brasso, Paech, Erikson, Koopes-Folkes
Div 2 - Beard
U18 - no idea - comp has been write off

Completely agree with these two points. Isaac deserves so much recognition from this league it is not funny. Won't say anymore there but to say let's hope an article gets posted soon. The one in the Herald yesterday was very good.

RE: GF Footy - Can forecast a couple of issues. The first one being the points raised here with timings. The "Time On" last three minutes brings up a great point, but do the clubs have good enough timekeepers to work it out? If so, should be happening.

Second point: Twilight footy - maybe have the main game on at the regular time and put the Second Division on after the main game (4pm) OR have no time on in Under 18's, Second Div or First Div. They don't play with it all year, so why impose it on them during the finals? If teams are worried about time wasting, that's where the "Deliberate Out Of Bounds" law comes into play. Umpires need to get that one right consistently during the finals and you will see teams keep the ball in more.

Third point RE: Grounds: Where else could you play the BDAFL GF other than Number One? City's home ground for many years, they've played many grand finals on it beforehand. Is Bateau Bay's ground an option? I don't know.

RE: Medal winners - I wish I could comment but because I have officiated in First and Second Div games this year I can't make comment. Good luck and congrats to anyone that wins a medal.

Good luck to EVERYONE in finals: It's this time of year that makes me wish I was still involved fully :(

I think Kurt Flemming from Terrigal and Anthony Stewart from City are both great chances for the Elliott-Davey medal. The finals should be very interesting this year through all grades. Great to see Terrigal beating City on the weekend, hopefully we see some great games between the 'Gig 3' (Cardiff, Terrigal and City) in the Premier Division finals. While Singo have been fantastic all year, hopefully Nelsons can put a full-strength side together and give them a run. Finally, can Maitland bring home a flag in their 1st year?

Time will tell, cant wait, really looking forward to it

For Elliot davey I think Corey shackleton is a massive chance, along with o'brien from hawks and bishop from terrigal
1st div you would think erikson or brasington are shoe ins
2nd div id say someone from maitland or maybe Glenn white from kv
18s I got no idea

Next year should be interesting with no 18s grade...who will have 3 teams? Is there going to be promotion/relegation in any of the divs from this year...and how will the draw work?

I'm also surprised that prem div are now all of a sudden playing twilight footy when no one has all year!

For those that are interested, I have photos from rounds 16, 17 and 18 now up on my webpage
http://dsfphotography.com.au/gallery.htm
then choose BDAFL 2012, then the round

For what its worth, I am not a fan of the late start to the Premier Division in the finals. I doubt the lights at No1 will be anywhere near adequate for my equipment to take any halfway decent shots. I will try it at this weekends game and see

Hey Dave .... The lighting is just another minor detail the BDAFL did not consider in its decision making on this one ... Along with yellow footies, the umpires the players having to play late on a Sunday on the central coast and then having to go iWork the next day, the dew, the unfair conditions that favor the team that have No.1 as its home ground, and the list goes on ... :)

Hope we see some more great shots from you though ... I always look forward to seeing them each week

I don't suppose anyone has today's results handy? Near enough 11pm and nothing on the website.

That twilight advantage didn't last too long. Twice in two weeks for TA. What was the story in Premier Division? Any big outs for City? I'm a bit disappointed I had to go early - it would have been an interesting one to watch.

heard from one umpire from Saturdays twilight game that it was very hard to see on the outer flanks at No.1 ... what a surprise ... wonder what bateau bay was like ... the lights dont look to robust from what I can see

U18 final was a tight affair ... 254 point win to Nelson Bay !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Funny story about the lights at Bateau... Had to extend the halftime because they didn't come on! Apparently it is all done remotely and somebody forgot to flick the switch...
Looked ok from the sideline, didn't venture to the middle though.

Would be interested in the players opinion of the lights at Number 1. From my point of view (as a photographer) they are completely inadequate. Once the sun was down I had to pack the camera away (just before the half time break). Maybe its my old eyes but, I couldnt read the scoreboard and my view of the play was pretty ordinary for the last 2 quarters

I've played there a few times, including one where I think three of the lights blew during the game, that one darkened up a little bit. I find them OK but find most lights hard to track the ball under anyway. There is some disparity in different parts of the ground, especially on the scoreboard side, but it's generally pretty good when the play is around you. I think the viewing is better down the ground than across the ground, if that makes sense, probably due to the placement of the towers. The scoreboard I find hard to read in the daytime so that might indicate how my eyes are going too.

Congratulations to Terrigal on their win and for the good of the comp it is great to see that the Cardiff v City run of grand finals is over. Adds that little bit more interest now and sets up an absolute cracker of a prelim that the league must surely be happy with. A huge game for both clubs this week.

The fact the lights are used for premier div in finals after not being used all year is a strange one, however I guess its the best way to fit the games in. I dont think anyone would be sticking around after the premier game to watch the pub comp in action, and Im sure the blokes playing that grade would be dirty about playing at that late a time. It would also be a bit deflating after watching the premier league gf to have a 2nd div grand final to close out the season. Bit of an anti-climax.

On the City getting a home final who cares. There are only about 3 grounds you can play finals at in the comp anyway so there isnt anything you can do about it. The only way around it is to play all the finals at Bateau Bay, but I dont think that is feasible. The grand final needs to stay at No 1 without doubt.

From what I have heard the footy was great on the weekend, the standard and intensity went up a cog and the good players performed. Only complaint I have heard from up here is that the $10 entry fee still is in effect. When you consider NEAFL semis are $7 to get into and you have AFL clubs involved there it is way too steep for Black Diamond footy. Drop it to $5 and youll make it more attractive for people to come and watch, then make the $5 you miss out on at the gate back through the canteen and bar.

Good luck to all teams over the coming weeks.
