A good win.. I should be happy... but I feel desperately sad. Hill. I think he's done. I might have known it rationally but I'm starting to truly realise it. I had been holding out hope but
I dunno why some people are this way with Hill. Has been really good since seeing him back and playing his role well. The dude still has great speed and I see him doing many good things onfield in defence.

They were saying it about Mundy not long ago. Just glad he's not still on the injury list personally.

I know people want to welcome the new stars to the AFL but cheering them everytime they go near the ball and before they have actually done something can work against them by giving them an overexaggerated sense of confidence IMO. Too many low percentage kicks but he will settle and learn from it.
So we should boo them then?

Seriously though, that is a dumb statement.

Ok. Fair enough. I've just been waiting since his debut to put it all together and he has never managed a full season of it. Half a season, a game here or there but has lost so much to tagging and injury. He may still have a role to play and be best 22, but his best is past him. I just accepted that last night. He's my favourite player. So I feel sad about that.

I think that's premature. Defence building comes first. Then mid. Then fwd.
JLo has a very obvious plan and has absolutely revamped our defence and mid. I think if he wants to stick with the current coaching set up for another year then we back him in.
They’re obviously doing a mountain of work with the fwd line with the amount of change that’s been happening, they aren’t just ignoring it while they work on defence

I don't share either the Blakely hate or love on here. I think he's in our best 26 - 28 and in a bit of a pickle if the youth overtake him and he stagnates. He is still relatively young which is why I would give him more of a chance than someone like Matera. He did a few good things last night but was lazy a couple of times too.
At this stage of the season, I would be reluctant to bring anyone new into the side who hasn't yet played this year. With no reserves comp, they wouldn't have played a proper game, let alone AFL game for a year and would need a few weeks to find their feet.
I thought Freddie was better last night, Henry deserves a chance and Shultz is doing what Matera couldn't, finding the ball.
Barring injury, no wholesale changes for me.

All - there’s a clear link between Connor returning to the team and our purple patch of wins

While he has limitations - stop and acknowledge the 2nd and 3rd efforts he did all night, and has done since his return.

He knows there’s pressure from below, but right now he’s clearly in our 22 and plays a pivotal role that enables other positional moves (fyfe forward, serong increasing game time, Conca lock down roles, Aish more outside than in, Mundy swinging between half back - mid - forward).

Everyone needs to ***** chill

Correlation is not causation.

54% TOG isn't a great stat from a fit 6 years old player.

A few random thoughts.

Our defence is set. Ryan and Cox are a great duo and with the calibre of guys we have out overall, it's premiership standard with a few different quality back 6 varieties possible and good depth. It's still on the young side too. I don't think we should spend any more time recruiting/drafting defenders this year. Running half backs, talls, lockdown types, interceptors - we have them all covered on our list.

The midfield is still a work in progress. Individually they were all decent but we lost the inside 50's. I think we're still searching for the right centre bounce and stoppage setups. Would like to see Valente at some point soon to see if he's an improvement on Blakely.

One aspect of the midfield that has been on my mind is that they definitely need to improve their scoring ability. A trademark of good teams is the fact they can get goals from their mids when the forwards are being contained. Cerra kicked a lovely stoppage goal which stood out last night because we haven't seen that all season. Training in isolated groups hasn't helped but I'd love to see Cerra, AB and Serong develop a hunger for scoring over this preseason. Brayshaw especially because he's growing in confidence everywhere else but still panics when he's near the goals.

With how disrupted his last few seasons have been, he's going to take a while to get back into the swing of things. This is another season where Freo aren't contending; using this season to get Hilly back into it and blood the young ones is a great use of the season IMO.

Given how Aboriginal players have traditionally been "welcomed" in the VFL (reading this article https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-08...r-story-football-doesnt-want-to-hear/12553554), I'm very keen on cheering and support. As a player I always felt a burst of energy from cheering, rather than overconfidence - although I never had anything near AFL-level cheering of course!!

Sure welcome him to the AFL like all players for Freo get but I dont wanna heap pressure on the kid to do something special evertime he gets it. It will develop with time and hopefully one day he will be our version of Cyril and be all silk.

I realise Im not going to have the popular opinion on the matter but I think most have have already mentioned the decision making and skill execution was way off. But that will improve no doubt.

Honestly, it just seems like a really weird thing to have an issue with. It’s honestly one of my proudest parts of our club with the way we get behind debutants, no one cheers like we do. Over-confidence is a hell of a lot better than under confidence for a debutant and it doesn’t really matter how they play in their first game.

IP, the point here is that “you must want it”. Tabs & Hughes have come from a long way back, but they’ve worked their butt’s off.

They are a perfect example why the club have moved on 2 players this week, who “didn’t want it”.

Who apart from Cam McCarthy has been moved on?

Sorry to have to ask but I have been out in the sticks for a couple of weeks and have missed a few things obviously.

I wouldn't worry about it tbh. Yes, you'd be right about Hill being part his best. That's only logical considering how long he's been around for but luckily this is a team sport and he's still good enough to be B22 on a flag winning team.
