How many other 20+ possession, midsize, great defending and elite ball using players do we have?

Technically everyone can be covered, but it doesn’t change the fact that it will be a monumental downgrade.
Newman also brings intangibles, leadership, communication, decision making and more. Not immediately replaceable.
Plug and hope thats all we can do.

You do realise they are human and not robots? For clarity, I said:

"Maybe you have a different idea of the word "tweak". A best 22 player goes down. Some form of tweaking will occur"

We are talking about a guy who was 2nd in our B&F. I think this would have absolute concerns for our coaching group on how best to cover the loss... make some tweaks. We have depth in this area, but not another Newman. Some tweaks will be made and who knows, it may make us better! But the assertion that you just put player "X" in that position instead and the problem is solved is a little simplistic

But Newman doesn’t play the same role every week. Some weeks he plays hard lock down deep, some weeks he plays on the small high forwards and some weeks he plays off and just accumulates possessions.
Cowan would be training in the various medium/small roles. Although every one here seems to think Haynes is a key defender most of his football would be in the roles I just described for Newman and would be shocked if he wasn’t training for a variety of back roles. Saad plays deep and high.
They just don’t train all summer for one role.
I don’t think what Soapy suggested was ridiculous.
Players would train for a variety of roles to cover such things.
You might call that a tweak (which is fair and reasonable) while others would think that is next soldier up (which I think is equally reasonable).

Just when I had convinced myself that this was going to be our year. Very, very disappointing to say the least. Nick was

clearly our second best player last season, his best without a doubt. This is the area of the ground where we do have the

most depth, so I have confidence that we can still be a big chance for the cup this year. Most likely to take Nics spot imo, is

Cow. Am a huge fan of Lachie, coming into his third season he is physically ready for this role imo. Another possibility could

be George, can play in defense and the role is not that much different to being in the center square. We would then still

have enough talent in our midfield group with Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, Jagga, Lord and maybe Ben Campo.

We will make some tweaks to what our best defense looks for 2025 and move on pretty quickly
