Looking for positives...

The good news is that it didn’t happen during preseason, or the season proper.

There may have been a structural issue that hadn’t been diagnosed and can now be fixed surgically.

He’s one player who has the tank to miss a bit of preseason and not be compromised during the season too badly.
Not to mention that most of us want him to play at FF out of the square anyway after his post-bye change up the year.

Bit less running than the chf/hhf/wing role I though he might play early days.

My solution is in two parts:
1 AFL gives compensation pick to the Losing club, and
2 AFL takes pick or picks to the points value of that compensation pick from the Gaining club.

Exactly...It is as simple as this.
Apply the formula to both teams

BUT

As we all know the AFL like to manipulate the system to suit their own agendas

Yesterday I had a crack at the 7 years bad luck relating to the binding of Isaac challenges. Came up with Eye Zucchini.
Don't reckon this is possible now (or probably ever!). If all our other targets are good things, then we simply don't have the currency. Arrow said currently no players are involved (from our end).
2 other possibilities: Isaac Smith - unlikely given his age, but it has been stated we are trading with the belief that we should play finals.
Back on the number 7 theme, what about the teammate of Eye Zucchini? Has the pace we need, should be gettable with next year's first? The positive development referred to by Ockhams Razor could be the Daniher decision i.e. Swans need the extra salary cap space?

I think it’s Gaff. The seven years is just reference to the length of the contract he signed last year. Seven years of bad luck if he stays at the Eagles.

Next year is hardly make or break for Charlie or the club, but losing it to an injury is still bad juju. He’s young but is old enough that every season is important for incremental improvement.

That said, you can’t really expect the kids to lock themselves in a padded room every off season.
Might still be back round 1

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

If FA compo is here to stay, it needs to be based on the contract offer from the current team.

It's supposed to compensate a club for a player walking out on them. Who cares what the new club is paying the player. If the current club doesn't rate them highly or is happy to let them leave, why do they need compo?

There should also be NO compo for teams in the top 4 or top 8.

So far near all FAs go to the top teams, defeating the entire premise of free agency.

Weighted too heavily in favour of teams at the top currently.

Do you reckon we can get him with what we will have left after other trades?
Just can't see how we are coming up with the currency for an absolute topliner. A player like that would have to disrupt other plans, and all the noise from the ITK's indicates those plans are looking likely.

Maybe we are casting a wide net? And at least one fishie is looking to stay caught?

I don’t claim to be an expert on any of this Earl. I think it depends on how much they need salary and draft picks for Kelly. They clearly need the draft pick, and our future first rounder might do it if they need the salary relief as well. If the cap is not a problem for Kelly, then my guess is that our future first isn’t enough.

None of us are experts on here - although some may dispute that! I like your thinking, but if next year's first was in the ballpark, I reckon other clubs would blow us out of the water with much better offers.

would depend on whether they could take on his salary though. My guess is we might be in a pretty unique position to do that.

Gaff would make most sense. West coast need picks to trade for Kelly. They will probably take a future first and second for gaff if it secures them Kelly.

I'm just really, really hoping this "secret" player isn't actually Gibbs.

I may be the minority here but I don't want him back.

The problem with Gaff is, he doesn't fit the "hasn't been mentioned before" criteria. The 7 years fits nicely. Bloody cryptic clues.
