Getting Knight and Cutler, who are both in the right age bracket, would be handy pick ups for sure.

Sure, not Papley levels of excitement, but certainly will add to our depth and get our age demographic going the right direction. Plus both definitely have the potential to surprise and become solid best 22 contributors things going well...Richmond is full of 'role players' who just play their part in the system well.

I'm looking at guys like Castagna, Baker, Butler (in 2017), imo even guys like Broad & Astbury. None of those guys are particularly skilled, certainly not stars at least but in a good system they are playing their role well enough to contribute to a premiership. Others like Grimes, Lambert & Soldo have improved immensely in their system.

Yep Hardwick in fact just said the other day that players like Castagna and Butler wouldn’t be as good at other clubs but they are critical in the Tigers’ system.

Not sure we have a system yet but Teague will have ideas on how we wants the team to play and would have told SOS what he needs. So no point judging Knight or Cutler based on what they’ve done at the Crows and Lions respectively. We don’t know what role they would have at the Blues.

Likewise for Martin and Papley - we don’t know if they are for the wing or as a mid or as a forward (or even half back in Martins case). We kinda have to sit back and just trust the Club to get it right and we won’t know if it will work for a couple of years.

We can apply for special dispensation from AFL to trade first and second picks 2019. You think having NO picks in the first 3 rounds will get that dispensation approved? Unlikely to be able to meet 3 required picks in the draft either.

Long stretch.

Upgrade Gibbons and we only have to take 2. Perhaps Manton as a late FS pickup, not sure if we've got any NGA/academy/etc payers available, otherwise maybe a late project ruck and someone else, small defender possibly, with a 3rd round or thereabouts. Easy.

But how do you convince a kid who was keen to move from Sydney to Melbourne that he should go back? Marchbank just tells you where to go and that if he doesn't get an extension past his 2020 contract, he'll go somewhere else in Melbourne who's screaming out for a tall defender. You do know you can't just ship players off wherever you'd like?

I don't think Josh Kennedy was all that enamored about heading back to WA. Deal got done.

Already been reported Gaff has a conditional contract just like Kelly.

AFL contracts slowly becoming NBA style. Good and bad for players. Easier for players to get out (UFA at specific points - leave for nothing). Far less protection if they get injured or their form slumps (Club simply refuses to active option and contract ends).
Yes but it's been reported he has a 'get out' clause

Just found this ...

Gold Coast looking for help getting Greenwood without giving up one of their top 20 picks. Possibly will be our future second to Adelaide in a roundabout 3 way trade.

Maybe gives us some leverage in the Martin deal.

Three-way trade could be on the cards, something like:

Carlton:
Give - 41, 69, 2020 2nd rounder
Get - Martin, Betts, Knight

Gold Coast:
Give - Martin, 55
Get - Greenwood, 41

Adelaide:
Give - Greenwood, Betts, Knight
Get - 55, 69, 2020 2nd rounder (Carlton)

Still would somehow need Marchbank to agree to move back to a city he was keen to leave 3 years ago, that's the only way the deal gets done. Unless Swans came with a significant offer I reckon he'd tell where to go. Things have changed a little in the 12 years since Kennedy went west.

Gaffs father was ill in 2018 wouldn't surprise me if an out relates to that, which in my view is fair enough.

I think the Eagles may have peaked especially if JK doesn't return to close to his peak eg Adelaide 2017 style drop but without blind folds and Richmond theme song.

Kelly is a more damaging player than Gaff, but ideally they'd want to keep both?

Perhaps we could take Brayshaw of Freo's hands so they could chase Kelly?

So, why are we getting rid of Marchbank? You people scare me sometimes.

Sydney interested in Marchbank, haven't shut it down. SOS needs to get Papley done and he will.

We can go back to potting "journalists" if you like.

Good on Castagna, he's clearly a dedicated, hard worker and has gotten the most out of his limited talents.

But geez, sliding doors moment for him to get picked up by Richmond and become a 2-time premiership player.

With his kicking skills, especially for goal, he could easily have been picked up by a lesser club and delisted within a few years imo.

Tigers have a good system and clear role for him that other clubs may not have. Also most other clubs couldn't carry someone who is such a shocking kick...imagine if Tigers lost by under a goal and you look over and see Castagna kicked something like 5 behinds and 1 OOTF from shots that weren't even that difficult? The fact that they are so good and are winning easily anyway makes it easy for them to overlook his misses.
