Just like to thank Aphrodite and the other Carlton mods who started the Bluemours NON Discussion Thread and who have kept it free of chat over the past few years.

It helps so much when you just don't have the time to read through this thread, cheers and great job.

I know next to nothing about basketball, so my questions are:

- how burdensome on the body is basketball compared to AFL? Fitness levels, movement, contact, injuries, etc?
- how much recovery time is required between games?
They have more blokes Simmo's age than AFL does, so it can't be as vigorous or as hard on the body.
I don’t see NBA as a close comparison, 5 on court compared to 22, average distance in the NBA 3.2km, AFL 8.5km, massive massive $$$$ increase and with players and teams on the road for the majority of the season.

Their season is 8 (2 months) or so weeks longer and it’s not that it isn’t possible, I don’t think it’s workable or would be wanted.

I would be quite concerned with the future of the game if the AFL went down that path, all of a sudden 16 players on the ground, then the grounds are probably too big and who knows what other crap would happen.

Now if we were to go to a championship, where the top team wins and why wouldn’t they, they have proved over a 34 game season home and away that they are the best, then I wouldn’t mind it, but that in itself has just as many unintended consequences.
Even a top 2 playoff would be okay if you have played everyone both at your place and theirs. Takes a couple of extra weeks off the length of the finals series.

It is not a comparison, more an example that around 100 games can be fitted into a 6 month period, despite vast distances being traveled, if you wanted to.

You will never get equalization unless there are 34 rounds, which I feel is too much, but you can improve the fixture

Play everyone once, 17 games

Then split the fixture into 2 groups based on ladder positions, odds and evens. Play each team in that group, another 8 games.

This would be a fairer system playing a range of clubs at every level of quality at that point in time

25 games, then move on to finals

Must say Arrow. Don't mind this at all. Now that is something. :D

NBA teams might play 7 games in 10 days flying in & out of different cities at all weird times when they have compressed stretches, can get tough.

The only way AFL can push to more games and compressed fixtures is by clubs being prepared to share the workload across their entire list.

Enjoying his highlights, his speed and dash looks impressive and his foot skills also... Be great if he could get a shot in one of the remaining games just to see how he goes back up at AFL level...
Could be one of those cases I’ve mentioned before about us not being afraid of being a little adventurous back ya gut and try things...
The one thing Polson has always had is the fire in the belly.

Even when thrown in the deep end and played as a tiny 18 y.o in an unfamiliar forward pocket, he was up for the fight and in the oppositions faces. Unfortunately he didn’t have the tools to back up his bravado.

Cam was never going to give up. Good luck to him for re-inventing himself as a rebounding defender. A small, quick, aggressive defender is obviously something we lack.

Would be a great story of resilience and persistence if he made it. Fingers crossed his 2s form translates to the 1s. He is quick. He is aggressive and he does have neat skills.

Granted though that it’s a big jump from a 12v 12 scratch match to the big stage..

That is a sure fire way to shorten footy players longevity if they brought those type of compressed fixtures full time into the AFL.

Wouldn’t be that dramatic in AFL though, maybe more like what we are seeing now 4 games in 14-15 days etc.
This would need to be a hubbed environment to avoid the travel factor which removes home ground advantages for some games meaning once again it’s a compromised fixture and uneven...

i've noticed a trend with you.
When you are serious you start with a capital.
when you are not, you don't.

I've figured you out Rubix.
i trust your opinion.....

34 games would be great, but AFL is just too physical. Unless you increase list sizes, but then you dilute the competition.

17 would work, but nobody wants a shorter season (players wouldn't because less revenue means lower salaries).

I don't mind the suggestion of something in between 22 and 34, depending on how it's done.

Let's say we go with 25. Then we can double up on all the blockbusters and still have enough games leftover to even out the fixture, to ensure everyone plays roughly the same level of competition twice.

So let's say the Blues, Pies and Tigers are all top 4 and Essendon is bottom 4 at the end of the prior season. We can all still play each other twice the following season, but Essendon's remaining games will be against lower ranked teams, to make up for playing 3 top 4 sides twice. 22 games isn't enough to do that.

Pickett was very fit when he did his knee - he was ready to explode on field for us - had that rare untouchable speed + factor going for him. Watched him play live at the SCG on a day Buddy kicked 10+ against us ( Byrne went down with his knee that day in Q1) Pickett was sunshine in a thunderstorm of sh*te for us that day- single-handedly ran the ball through the fifty arcs and Sydney couldn't lay a hand on him - amazing player could have been anything.

Worthy of a chance if he is up for it and still has the Yarran+ type speed - but that is maybe just me a romantic soft spot for genuine class.
Yeah remember that match, showcased his talent and electric speed... I’m a massive fan, i was spewing when he cracked his knee and then retired.... I highly doubt he’ll come back but if he and the club were serious on it happening, I’d be over the friggin moon if he could get up and running again...

Like that, intraclub hitouts then clubs can organize a practice match leading into round one... No more crappie meaningless preseason comp games, get straight into it, 25 rounds is about as long as you would want it...

Interesting rumour just on the main board about Dow applying for a trade, started by one of our own as well.

Don't know the context of the rumour so should probably have a look.

It's generally a good thing when players undertake some form of education or training on the side part time.

Gives them perspective and a balance away from the football scene.

Good on him for learning something new if the rumour is true.

Kudos to you sir. I laughed and feel so much better.
