I see that Tim Watson is encouraging Carlton to go after Luke Dunstan. It staggers me that you can be paid 100's of thousands of dollars to have an opinion on football and just have absolutely no idea about list needs and game style. Seriously. We are so slow through the middle, don't run both ways, miss targets and he wants us to go after Luke Dunstan, a slow left footer who can't hit targets. My god I need a break from footy.
You just have to go back to Tim's (short term) stint as coach of the saints.

Made all of our recent coaches look like suoerstars.

Lots of people will be upset with the lack of amount of info that comes out today.

The good news us that there will be plenty on here "in the know" who will make some stuff up for us.

Don't be silly, Carlton leaks like the titanic just before it nosedived!

that aint changing, they've leaked that Teague is gone, leaked that Lloyd is gone, public messaging and back door leaks thats how we operate at Royal Parade.
Bruce Mathieson has been a behind the scenes dial a quote for many a year and don't kid yourself for one second that information won't be forthcoming from this faction from tonight onwards.

It's already decided that Clarko or Ross will be coaching in my view, it was decided mid year. I don't think it's the wrong call but this whole review thing is to show publicly that we follow process when in actual fact the result is already pre determined. Thats why the review was made public mid season.

That’s the problem often with the majority into which category you fall, they have no f***** idea but they confidently think they do. Which, amongst other things, explains why the “arguably” incompetent, corrupt Morrison government is probably going to win the next election.
why?
Because, National politics, like AFL football, is governed by emotion and ignorance, rather than reason and sensible values.

Back to Carlton, this club has stuffed up the selection of senior coaches post Fagan. Other AFL clubs haven’t.

Why can’t our board pick the appropriate person?

Reason: because they don’t understand the basics.
This isn't an argument that needs winning, though I'd point out that much of Richmond's success has come from eschewing typical footy masculinity and allowing themselves to trust and be open and vulnerable. You know...the sensible values that you oddly worked into your response/rant above.

Mark Thompson...a great coach of the modern era, nothing masculine about him.

John Longmire is neither overtly masculine (nickname aside) or a creative bullshit artist. Rather a steady, considered type...who succeeded from another steady, considered type.

Adelaide trying to engender masculinity and survivor mentality absolutely cost themselves a flag.

Our club has failed for 25 years because we have never had the patience, cohesion and alignment of purpose across the entire club to succeed. It has rarely, if ever been because of the coach...Malthouse an exception.

At least our media team are elite. Top 4 in the comp for sure. About the only top 4 finish we'll get in 2021.
We used to be pretty bad.... now it's really good! Call me crazy but I look at that improvement and believe we could actually go from bad to really good in other areas of the footy dept with the right people!

One thing they all have in common is that at some point they were rookie coaches without a premiership. ;)
Correct, and how many of them coached a premiership in their first 50 games?

BTW, I think I've said it before, I'm not 100% for or against Teague. I'm 100% behind the review whatever that outcome means to us. I do want him to have a chance though, which I don't think he's been afforded yet. And I'll keep bringing up the Thompson/Hardwick reviews and what happened thereafter.

Nothing surer than these three things in life ...
1. Death
2. Taxes
3. Bluemours no discussion thread blowing up on “Review Day”.

Ken Oath

There is a false equivalency scourge undermining modern society. Somehow many people have been convinced that their own opinions matter more than experts. See also vaccines.

Opinions are part of what makes footy great, no question. But I’ll back the review over my own feelings and I say that as someone who otherwise supports a change of coach.

Real issue is that most 'experts' aren't experts.... so you need to have an opinion on at least that issue.

Watson has two aspects to his public image:

Timmy the former 15 year old prodigy, father of Jobe, matey matey with characters of the game etc

& Tim Watson, Essendon & AFL insider.

Timmy probably thinks Luke is a "nice young man".

But there is also nothing more certain than Tim Watson proposing something that would not be of value for Carlton.

If Kane Lucas and SPS went head to head for a hard ball get, who'd pull out of the contest first?
easy… Blaine Boekhorst

I know this doesn't need a serious response, but I'll uncharacteristically provide one.

When trying to work out how outside a player is, I usually look at their contested possession rate (what % of their possessions are contested), tackles and clearances.

I compared four obvious outside mids at Carlton; SPS, Lucas, Boekhorst and LOB. And then for comparison, I compared four of the elite wingers from recent years; Isaac Smith, Tom Scully, Brad Hill and Andrew Gaff.

Here are the results (overall column ranks the players from most inside (#1) to most outside (#8):

1628729942154.png

SPS came out the most contested of all players
..... (gap)
Smith then Scully close behind
....
Lucas
.....
Boeky & Gaff equal
....
Hill
....
LOB

Notes:
  • This does not take into account quality of player (or # of possession), just how 'outside' they are.
  • Colours show how the player ranks under each category (eg comparing player As tackle #s to everyone else's tackles*)
  • Overall was based on average of three categories. I tried tweaking the weightings (eg 50%/30%/20%) and it made almost no difference
  • * This is not part of the masculinity discussion
