Maybe, but if you add Williams and Oliver to our midfield how on earth is Stocker ever going to get a look in anyway? If he somehow is the key to unlock the trade to get Oliver in you definitely explore it.

When you look at the team sheet there is essentially 7 defenders & forwards, 8 mids & 1 ruck.
2021 best 22 midfield - Cripps/Curnow/Murphy/Williams/Oliver/Walsh/Setterfield and let's say Newnes on a wing.

We have some forwards who can rotate mid like Martin/Gibbons/Fish/Cunners.

Depth options for an inside midfield position include Dow & Philp - both played games this year ahead of Stocker. And then there's Kennedy although I assume he could be traded.

I mean I wouldn't put Stocker on the table straight away but IF we had to it's a no brainer...he's well down the pecking order and we have plenty of inside mids on the list.

This line of thinking always fascinates me.

We yearn for depth and yet when that depth begins to manifest itself, all of a sudden people panic and assume change is required.

The fact is, even with the addition of Oliver and Williams there are question marks hovering over our midfield - both immediate and future.

Just look at the list you've provided above:
  • Cripps: Gives us everything but we'd have loved to give him more of a rest than what we have to date
  • Curnow: Remains a key component of our midfield, but at 31 we can't continue to rely on him to carry as heavy a load as what he has done in recent years
  • Murphy: 33 years old with the 2021 every chance of being his last
  • Williams: An excellent footballer but we don't know yet what he can offer as a full time midfielder. Also has just three uninterrupted seasons under his belt
  • Oliver: Great. Is he here yet?
  • Walsh: No issues.
  • Setterfield: A huge improver in 2020 but what is his ceiling?
  • Dow: I am a huge fan but he's no sure thing
  • Philp: You better believe I'm a massive fan but he has zero exposed form as an inside mid at this level
Question marks everywhere for a whole host of reasons, from role to age to durability.

Stocker is a 20 year old kid with 2 years in the system now under his belt, with that second year being heavily compromised. He's contracted and would be worth far more to us than he would be to any other side at this stage.

Stocker may make it, he may not. We simply do not know yet, but what we do know is that right now he's not the key to unlocking anything.

I'll be stunned if he's not at the club in 2021.

The exodus continues ...

Zac Williams, Aidan Corr, Jackson Hately, Jeremy Cameron & now Jye Caldwell.

I thought Xavier O'Halloran wanted a move away too but he hasn’t said so yet. Apparently some clubs are into him too. Given all these outgoings, he could be the next to move.

What's Caldwell worth?

See Will Setterfield.

Second round pick and a sweetener.

Giants were comfortable to lose Setterfield, who had done an ACL and managed 2 games in 2 years. They want to keep Caldwell, and have offered him a contract.
Think he would be worth more.

Essingtin via virtue of quality over quantity.

Corr is a bog ordinary battler, and Hately and Caldwell are atill unproven/not best 22 players yet.

Bombers are having 4 starting/best 11 players taken away, which will hurt them a lot.

I don't think Cameron's loss will hurt the Giants as most think, esp if Jake Riccardi continues with his very impressive debut season form.

Rumours that Smith wants out of * too...

Not too sure if he wanted to move Clubs but some Clubs are interested.

This is from September.

I think so too.

Losing all their run out of the backline will hurt.
Wonder whether McGrath knows he'll be plopped back there, with midfield duties reduced to a minimum :)

Daniher is more important to Essendon than Cameron to GWS.....maybe the same.

Another small-ish mid for Essendon.
Not to say it can't work, but they have plenty of other holes to fill.

I couldn't see how nor why we would have been seriously into Caldwell. If we were though, he would have come to us and not Essendon.

That just makes too much sense.....it has to be.
I wonder how this will impact Merrett with another inside mid coming in et al a young inexperienced but talented one, could help us if not this year certainly next, I hope we are all over Merrett and that we persevere into next year as he makes more sense to Carlton than most mentioned.

WOW Clayton Oliver news massive, Oliver Williams Saad haul would be unbelievable.. fingers crossed 🤞

What is Caldwell thinking, why would you go there even for the money, big dose of toxic shock coming his way.
Average career span of an afl player + the fact a lot of them don't have hugely good prospects after footy life. They've gotta look after themselves as best htey can long term. It's completely reasonable that he can go to a team that has vacancies in the middle and offering long term security. In some sense the rest doesn't really matter that much.

Yeap.

People seem to forget we have players at either end that will be casualties of acquiring the likes of Williams, Saad, Oliver, which we can accommodate with draft picks.

Losing The likes of Moore, Phillips, Owies types, or replacing the likes of Betts, Murphy over the next 12 months

We don't need to consider Stocker, Dow types in trades this year

Watch Essendon get Caldwell on the cheap

We don’t use that word around here.

For future reference:

“Watch * get Caldwell on the cheap”

“Watch Asterisk get Caldwell on the cheap“

“Watch Essington get Caldwell on the cheap“

“Watch Dopeingdon get Caldwell on the cheap“

Yeah but they have many more years ahead and my point still stands, Saad is not worth two young, talented players who were both taken in the top 15 of their respective drafts.

What it also does, is it frees up one senior list spot to go after Oliver, while also retaining pick 7, and also as OR stated - getting Saad in a trade means we will work the salary cap in order to set everything up for a shot at Oliver.

Kennedy isn't worth much more than a late 3rd round pick. We got him in 2017 for a mid 2nd, and now he is 3 years older with not much more to show for it. His draft selection 5 years ago (which is based off underage competitions) doesn't hold as much weight as the body of work in the AFL to date.

I'll give you Caldwell though, he is still a young kid with potential and has way more value. We're not paying them Caldwell though, just merely facilitating that deal in order to get our own deal across the line.

GWS are currently losing 6 players through trade and free agency, and are negotiating with Preuss and likely more to come to GWS. Facilitating a deal will be important as they are likely to be spending most of their time banging heads with Geelong over Cameron, while also negotiating Hately's deal with the Crows.

Skill, tick.
Athleticism, tick.
Will to take hits and put body on the line, not yet.

SPS, Cuningham and Fisher don't tick all the boxes and IMO the physicality part is massive.

We'll quickly go back to getting smashed around the contests if we play the wrong guys in the wrong positions.

They need to prove to Teague they will be uncompromising when a contest presents itself and when strongly physically challenge by the opposition to get a look in at the centre and so far this is the big weakness of these three players (and some others).

Our coach has this right.
I’ve never seen them shirk a contest when they had to go, Cunners has best body size from the three but they can all contest fine for their sizes, they all have different skill sets that would enhance a better balance... Instead of Cripps Setters Curnow doing the majority of the work way too much, Rotations of Walsh Cunners Fisher SPS offer a lot more diversity, we are way too one dimensional...

I thought Xavier O'Halloran wanted a move away too but he hasn’t said so yet. Apparently some clubs are into him too. Given all these outgoings, he could be the next to move.
It’s looking that way and that would be that whole draft class of mids wiped out for GWS, that would really start to be concerning added to the other departures, shows how a bad season for GWS can really affect player retention.

You forgot Essenscum 😜

If Caldwell nominated for this year’s draft where would he likely go? I would have thought he’d be top 10.

Unless he’s happy walk to North via the PSD, I’d suggest Ess will need to pay close to his market value.

Caldwell worth more than Setterfield who had missed close to 2 years due to ACL.

Also now that they are losing Cameron they have salary cap room to keep him. They will put up a fight, they are also under pressure with 5 players wanting out. They need to sell that others will have to pay top dollar if they want their players.

this is a positive for carlton with Dodo

Let's play a game... its called 'Dodoro is the kind of guy'. I'll start.

Dodoro is the kind of guy who would negotiate with a parking meter for the hourly rate.
Dodoro is the kind of guy who'd stuff paper up a payphone's return chute so he could collect other people's coins.
