Could also wait for Geelong to give GWS 2 mid late first for Cameron which gives them 4 firsts and trade 8 for the latter two
That's what I was thinking.
Don't forget that the bombers would be looking at our first pick so they could on trade it. As they can't trade out there own.

Bit hard on DC who's been on the list an extra two years but it's make or break for Dow and O'Brien? Dow was injured all year so he had a poor run with injuries too. Cuningham plays one good game in every 10 or more he plays. Love some of his attributes but he's a rich man's Nick Graham. Don't think long term he's taking us anywhere.

I'd argue that DC has shown more in his time at the club than both Dow and LOB.

I also think Pick 8 + a Second coming back seems reasonable. I also would prefer EFC's 2nd next year than this year 2nd pick as I think they could finish even lower. A seconds not going to be that exciting with when they'll have 6,7 & 8.

Its a great year for them to get lots of first round picks as the draft is more a lottery this year than ever. Be a shame if they picked 3 duds
They don’t have a second rounder this year so it will be a future or one they bring in

But you are forgetting that * have 7. Any trade we offer Cats can be bettered by them

U watch treloar have a stellar year next season! Surely he doesn’t stay at Collingwood after all that has been said. Id definitely give treloar a life line next year

I’m not sure he will with his wife and very young child in Queensland and I’m betting the pies hierarchy are convinced he won’t either

If we're happily handing over our biggest trade assets for out of contract players (who probably weren't worth that much when contracted) just to look nice, then we're ******* screwed.

It's both hilarious and sad that while we sit by hoping everyone likes us, the top clubs will continue making 'ruthless but fair' deals without incident. I guarantee that this trade period while we pat ourselves on the back for being "good to do business with" other clubs will be making deals that will have our jaws dropping.

It cracks me up that it's automatically assumed that if we stood our ground and ended up missing out that we'd be the laughing stock, and not * for making unreasonable, pigheaded demands and losing one of their best players for nothing. It's as much a reflection of our club's demure attitude as it is of da predetermined meedya narrative, and now it's infecting our supporters.

How about WE control the ******* narrative for once?? We deal in good faith, but won't bow down to insulting demands, and aren't afraid to cut our losses if need be. WTF is wrong with that??

Case in point, St Kilda last year. Peter Bell was making stupid demands re: Hill, and instead of bowing to it they made other deals to give Bell less floor to stand on, ultimately winning out for far less than what was demanded. Were they criticised for being unreasonable? fu** no, they were praised to high heaven, and other clubs know not to fu** around when dealing with them.

But no, let's let everyone walk all over us because like moths to the flame, it will attract others to deal with us and do the very same.

Great post.

Essendon have controlled this one from day dot, from making their incredible trade demands, allowing us to leak them and continuing to push the point to the club and via the media that a deal wont happen if Pick 8 is not involved.

Lets make our move and get rid of it, remove the constant auto-suggestion and put Essendon on the back foot for the first time.

The longer we hold on to Pick 8 the more likely it is to come into play.

This is true, but 14 needs to go for picks this year. If they accept a second and future second, they will be down on total 2020 draft points and after matching a bid on JUH and there juicy second rounder for next year will be pushed way back to pay for the points debt.
As was seen with Freo this year.

Easier way would be trading pick 8 and 29, for the Dogs 1st this year and next year. May need to shuffle some later picks

That gives the Dogs more currency this year.

We could also do the same deal with the Pies

Alternatively, we can split picks with Cats or Lions, Essendon might want to do similar with one of their 1sts, but I doubt they will want to do it with both clubs.

Unless something comes back of substance, giving up pick 8 for a 27 year old, OOC, HB, is paying an unrealistic premium as the main component

Deadset the whole Saad situation has played out with us on the back foot, Essendon keep asking ridiculous for him and us/management leak it have a laugh but it's getting us nowhere, the narrative is about what we are offering money wise but why arent we going on the offensive as a club and bringing up what they refused to offer originally & what has come out about him being selfish. And now it's we have done a grouse job to talk them down to 8 and change, Essendon need picks for Caldwell, Dunkley and/or potentially Ross plus others while needing a first for the draft, let's us that against them.

Flip side is we have had both Papley and a Martin nominate us without getting a deal done. Making Saad happen is probably more important than “winning” the trade. Still, he’s not worth pick 8 straight up, so that can sod off.

Neither trade went through last year and yet we walked away just fine, reputation well and truly intact.

Only on BF and in the media is it an issue that we didn't get either deal done.

Just tell * to go away. I really don't get the attraction with Saad anyway. Completely over rated in my opinion. Yeah he runs a bit but a lot of the times he seems to run just for the sake of it. He is a horrible kick. Just a kick and hope type player. Worst of all he played for *. That's enough for me to walk away.

There has been a lot of work done by Carlton, Saad and his management team to talk sense into the Saad deal. They’ve talked it down from 8 + (one of our under 22 year old first rounders) to working around us getting some change from Pick 8.
It’s at a tricky impasse at the moment. Daniher getting band 1 compo means any offer we make to split our pick 8 with Geelong or Brisbane can now be trumped by Essendon. The club is acutely aware of how negotiations went with Papley and Martin last year, and there is growing sentiment that when you convince a player to come, you need to make sure it happens smoothly, otherwise there are fears players and managers won’t want to work with us in the future.
As it stands the deal will have pick 8 going to the bombers with change yet to be agreed upon.
What's the indication here? That if we offer Cats 8 and 29 for 13 and 20, Essendon will just offer Cats 6 and 47?
Not sure what Essendon gain from that?
If we do the swap and offer 13 for Saad and 47 (values him at 21), Bombers end up with 6, 7, 13. We end up with 20, 47, 50 and Saad.
If Ess trump us and we offer 8 and 50 for Saad and 20 (values him at pick 20), Bombers end up with 7, 8, 13, 47, 50. We end up with 20 and Saad.
They've downgraded 6 to 8 and picked up 50.

Try celibacy then you might have some wet dreams instead. 😜

of Sam Walsh?

We can threaten the PSD or ND all we want, but realistically, trading in such poor faith hurts our brand more than many imagine. The worst part of this is the weeks and weeks of subconsciously devaluing Saad by many of our supporter base who are transfixed on winning a trade battle with Dodo rather than improving our side.
As I said at the start, the clubs not just going to get bent over for the sake of it, but we will not be walking away from the trade.
Love your posts 43, but I disagree with that comment. When it comes to the 'brand' of being a reasonable trading partner, Dodo is the lowest of the low. Yet he still managed to get Smith and Shiel over the line, and this year Caldwell and Dunkley have nominated *. So having a poor brand doesn't seem to have hurt them one bit. Frankly I couldn't care less if we hurt our 'brand'. I want our list manager to be acting in the best interests of the club, not making friends and building their own personal reputation and career at the expense of the club.

PS. I mean no disrespect to our club officials involved. I love what they are doing. I just wonder if the concept of being a good trading partner is being overblown and if there is actually any genuine benefit for the club

Some incredible melts in here.

All this will be forgotten when Saad is smashing it off half-back playing consistently good footy for us. Years of failure have seen many of our supporters become obsessed with high draft picks, and with “winning” other off-field elements of the game, like trade week.

For all we know Austin may be targeting players that could be drafted early or very late (mature ager or two?). In such an instance it really doesn’t matter where your picks fall. Regardless I feel like he is really going to try and make our late picks work, unlike his predecessor.
