And then back to Bendigo...

Amazing to think that Clayton was cut from the Pioneers squad. Coming from that way, it goes to show how badly that team is run. They've basically got the squad picked from u16s level or earlier and nobody else gets a look in, has always been the case. Late bloomer? Piss off. Played other sports more seriously until now? Unlucky.

There is probably going to be an Oliver/Bontempelli out there somewhere because of 2020, wonder if he has already been picked or is going to be running around at some other level

I suppose it depends what age you are, and how in-depth your knowledge of junior footy is. I assumed Ferris was referring to Stephen Oliver, who went back to play in the Bendigo league in the 90's.

Maybe 3168 can be the saviour 30 years later, and NOT return to Bendigo.

Possibly he was referring to the great Charles Oliver who played for us in 1900. Kicked a goal in every game he played.

Or possibly I'm just bored and your assumption was correct.

Pretty hard on Echuca kids, 200kms+ round trip for training multiple times a week, interrupts homework, paid work and social life for a remote chance of being noticed by an AFL club.

I think the Shepparton kids had to drive to Albury Wodonga once a week to train for the Bushrangers.

Think about Kalgoorlie lads that make State Colts feel ... 650 km's each way every second weekend ...

Distance is a major drawback, but spare a thought for the kids whose parents don't have the ability, wherewithal or inclination to get the kids to training whether it be a few kilometres or hundreds.

Hmmm ... slightly different one would think.

Yes, in hindsight I think he was referring to Stephen Oliver. I misread the tea leaves there and went on a tangent, semi-rant :straining:

Extremely hard. Worse for the Mildura area blokes though, who are somehow part of the Pioneers catchment, along with Swan Hill and Echuca. A lot of them end up boarding places because of the challenges associated, which actually sets them up better in the long run IMO.

The Pioneers set up has unique challenges no doubt, but it has been a "favourites" set up for a long time and plenty of kids have slipped through the cracks if you ask many from the areas concerned. There have been some head scratchers over the years who not only make the list but get games over others who may have come on or were outside the "system".

Clayton Oliver is a prime example, who if memory serves me used a semi-dodgy address in Moroopna (one of his parents or grand-parents?) in order to get games for the Bushrangers after he was cut. The rest is history.

How long until the next Matthew Pavlich to Carlton rumor?
Apparently we're into this Saad bloke.

Plenty of kids miss opportunities in a myriad of sports based on these factors. Imagine the number of rural or indigenous kids just didn’t get a chance over the years based on these factors.

Then there are others who take advantage of systems; knew a kid some years ago who left Basketball Queensland Junior systems with a debt in excess of $10 000 in “loans” to get to championships and represent the state. Kid never made it and the “loans” were never paid.

Sure, I would love to drive 15-20 minutes to a game. Or walk, or ..... or ...

Had a mate who fractured his patellar into 4 pieces. Wasn’t worried about the fractured patellar at the time... mainly because he was more concerned about the ruptured ACL, PCL, and Medial ligament injuries he suffered. Had 3 knee reco ops over 18 months.

Thirty five years later and he’s now looking at a knee replacement. Gets a limp when he’s on it for too long.
But can he go through the midfield?

Rumour is Hardwick is going to be sacked this week.

IF he is sacked..... Look out for:

'I've achieved all I wished for an more' and

'2020/pandemic have shown me that it's time to spend more time outside of footy and focus on my family'

Wow footy crosses into personal circumstance ... I find this unpalatable. 40% of Marriages end in divorce. That is like saying any person in any other workplace should be dismissed for the same reasons ... there would be a lot of job losses.
