great post, al - can't accept women aren't interested in "mates, loyalty, building a squad" though - they often mention in post game interviews how they love playing with the group and look forward to team success - agree it possibly isn't as ingrained from earlier years........

Something we have to get used to in Womens footy at the moment. Andy Maher talked about it on The Carlton show a year or so ago - culturally there is absolutely no loyalty in women's footy - the just don't think the same way as the men (mates, loyalty, building a squad etc).

Caro said on 3AW on the weekend it's something they will need top address once the competition stabilizes as the traditional club fan bases will want to see a team grow together, kids with numbers on their jumpers etc. It was in response to a caller lamenting losing the Hosking twins.
Absolutely correct. At this point, the player base isn’t there so having experienced High quality players moving clubs and sharing their skills at training helps stabilise the player base and eventually when there enough pathways into playing top level football and there are stable second tier competitions, people will start getting behind the clubs and the players.

Also, having the big named players moving clubs will attract a fan base based on those players. Another thing that will help the competition is the AFL actually starting to treat it like a real sport instead of a novelty. Sort out a proper fixture for the sport instead of only playing 10 games Plus finals.

Yeh - that probably sounded a bit harsher than I meant it to. I think because the money is so poor for most players at the moment, if they get a better offer, they will take the offer rather than stick with their existing teammates or 'loyalties'.

As Maher also said, the woman are just different - they have to be coached differently, you can't publicly berate them as you perhaps would a male footballer for example.

Not for a moment though am I saying they are soft. Have three daughters who play footy and the girls are tough as nails. I'm a bit of an evangelist for women's footy - it's been a revolution in our household.
