Although he may be worth it, I hope we don't pay over the odds for a back, simply because we declared our intentions to pick one up...

Is this really the player that we expect will help us with our deficiency?

We are not going to magically pluck a gun tall defender from another club without paying a heavy price. So a second-rounder for a good prospect developed by a successful club seems okay to me...

Laidler is a promising and versatile defender who can either go third man up or provide a bit of rebound. Add him to Jamison, Bower, Austin and White and hopefully we've got most situations covered, especially if Bower and Jamo can have improved seasons. He could also have the effect of releasing Gibbs or Lucas further up the ground.

I rate Laidler and whilst you're right that he might not necessarily be the ultimate solution to our problems down back, his addition would provide some good flexibility to our defensive structures.

I think he'd fit in well at Carlton, probably the opposite of an Armfield - not quick but nice disposal by foot and pretty tough. That said, his defensive skills are a bit of an unknown. Looked very impressive in the NAB Cup last year when we won the flag, but his AFL games have been so-so I think.

I'd be pretty happy with a second rounder for him...

Thanks STC.

So he is a flanker who can rotate through the midfield. Would quite possibly flourish in our team where we like to break from the back at pace. Army is coming along as an excellent rebounding defender/mid and would possibly complement Laidler in our defence.

Both of them are hard tacklers and if they could form a partnership in the defence on one side, it could be quite formidable. Possible move Army back into the pocket as first receiver from the kickouts, work it to Laidler who draws a couple of defenders and then dishes it back off to Army as he comes through at pace.

Army isn't hard?

Thanks for the thoughts on Laidler, STC. It's nice when we get other teams posters around here and they're not jerks.

As it appears you'll lose Jacobs, it's been suggested on our board Laidler and Gamble (apparently you've been sniffing there too) for Jacobs and a 2nd round pick. Any takers?

So if we've already supposedly asked for Laidler in exchange for our second-rounder, that essentially makes your proposed trade Jacobs for Gamble?

No thanks.

If it looked like we were going to get nothing for Jacobs i'd do this to at least add more depth to our list.

Pass on that thanks.

I'm thinking the same thing. We need guys down back who can move the ball quickly and without butchering kicks and turning it over. Adding Laidler on a flank would give us one more guy who can use the ball well coming out of the backline, and it should also free up Gibbs or Lucas or whichever midfielder we play back there to help move the ball.

I think you may have missed my point. I don't know anything about him, so I wasn't arguing the merits of picking him up, or for what value.

I would rather the club not trade for a defender if no quality players are available, rather than reach for a player, to appease supporters. I'm not saying we are doing this, I'm simply saying I hope that is not the cause for picking him up (or someone similar)

Carlton's 2nd pick to Geel for Laidler (steak knives) so that Geel can ontrade that pick to Port for Motlop. Port get rid of Motlop so they can then do the Walker deal for their 1st pick.

Just an idea.

That sounds good in theory, but apparently the Cats have come out and said that they are not interested in Motlop.

I hope those who are on here saying that a 2nd rounder is too much to give for someone that is still quite raw at AFL level, but has obvious talent and ability are not the ones who are claiming the opposite in when it comes to the trading of Sauce.

I recognise that Sauce is a touch more proven at AFL level, but it's a matter of opportunity really and that just simply hasn't been afforded to Laidler for obvious reasons.

This lack of experience however is reflected in the discrepency between the respective offers, which makes me think it's not far away from what I've seen and read about Laidler.

I would argue that a hard at it, skilled (by foot) and defensively able medium backman is as necessary at Carlton as Sauce is at Adelaide.

Carlton have made their displeasure at recieving a 2nd/3rd rounder for Jacobs known and it very well could be that we are disinterested in the expected talent that is predicted to be around at that stage. Would make sense given our 'stockpile' of youth. We don't need any more Tiller's on the list TBH.

I'm keen if they are.

Cats are mad if they let this kid go and allow Milburn to play on.

Our gain big time he's been stalled by their rock solid back six, he'd be playing at any other club. Looking like ours. Right age mature body now ready to blossom great target.

I like how you guys on the Carlton board hail Swann and Icke as trading Gods, yet apparently their version of 'negotiating' is 'you give us this or we won't talk to you'. That's not negotiating, that's being pigheaded.
Whatever you wanna call it, they get the best result for the club :thumbsu:

Your trading strategy currently reminds me of a second hand car salesman.

Please, please, please can someone take Motlop? He's not that bad. We promise.

Jacobs is a ruckman. Laidler is a half back flanker.

They are incomparable in value.
