Coopers are a bit of a funny one. They're trying to push into new territory to take market share from other breweries who are doing new-world style beers (hop forward, more aromatic craft beers like XPAs/IPAs/some Pale varieties/Pacific Ales etc) but their production setup doesn't facilitate those kinds of beers, so they're kind of trying to shoehorn the production methods they know (for slower fermented, bottle conditioned, 'traditional' beers) into these more modern styles and the result isn't great.

They also have their house yeast strain which is basically their signature and a huge part of the 'Coopers-ness' of all of their beers, which they're persisting with using on modern beer styles (which generally should have minimal yeast character) even though it doesn't lend itself to those kinds of beers at all

So they are ****ing idiots?

I must be boring, just drink Carlton Draught on tap wherever I go and the same in tins at home.
If I’m at a bar and it’s packed and not sure what’s on tap (perhaps I’m just awkward in these situations) I’ll go Carlton Draught. Or if I’m going to a family gathering (on the in-laws side) I’ll bring a slab of Carlton Draught to share. It’s not a bad drop.

I suspect a few us sorry gluten feee folks are feeling left out. 😅 So I feel obliged to point out that Two Bays Pale Ale and IPA are genuinely good brews of you like that style. If you drinking with a gluten intolerant/allergic mate, get a slab and drink it with him. He'll appreciate it and you'll enjoy it.

Is that you Dad?
careful what you google

wasn't Coopers the ones that ran a particularly tone-deaf ad during the SSM plebiscite, and nearly ended the company overnight.
That's a gentle way of describing the ad. They aligned themselves pretty clearly with straight up bible bashing bigots and copped a fair bit (probably still less than they deserved) of backlash for it

Heaven forbid that anyone dares to hold a view that doesn't conform to the religion of secularism/scientism.

It's a tremendously ironic view of the world.

diplomatic is how i'd describe it :p

this thread has been derailed enough already :p

This is interesting and explains a lot.

The XPA is just too much and its almost like the hops hasn't had a chance to react with the beer. The hops in the XPA and even diluted as it is in the Pacific grates.

They did, however, nail this: Liquorland | Buy Beer, Wine, Spirits & Ciders at Great Prices

They should rebrand the XPA as the Australian IPA with the purple label. It's everything I expected when I tried to think what green/coopers would task like as an IPA.
Interesting that you don’t like the XPA but did like the IPA - a lot of the feedback was that people didn’t like it for the same reasons they weren’t into the XPA, ie it was too yeasty, soapy, unbalanced, and generally just suffered from very poor use of hops.

It was only released as a one off so they could test the response and the market’s appetite for it but they learned that Coopers drinkers don’t really want an IPA, and IPA drinkers don’t really want Coopers’ version of an IPA.

You seem to know a lot about their beers. Given your username I thought you might prefer cheap wine.
I’ve been trying to tell Jimmy for years that ‘cheap wine and a three legged goat’ is a way better and more intriguing lyric but he’s not interested

There will be a video in the news of one of the players dancing on a table with a gram bag of white powder tomorrow, and Kane Cornes saying I told you so. 😆
Tbh I’d be disappointed if it was only a gram bag. Sad to see the boys party about as hard as they play

I suppose that XPA is characteristically Coopers which is why I think it doesn't work. It's too much.

I thought the IPA was a really well balanced Indian pale ale with a Coopers twist, exactly what I thought the XPA would be.

Aren't the players going to Spain for a wedding or is that just the cover story?
I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure they are going for dev smiths wedding. I remember stringer mentioning it during dev’s retirement video.

Would explain why so many are going and you can’t knock them for attending a good mates wedding whether it be overseas or not. Geez they’re allowed some time to unwind after a terrible year.

Just better come to work come pre season!

It was literally a gay MP (Tim Wilson) and a Christian MP (Andrew Hastie) debating the plebiscite in a pretty tame fashion. The backlash was over the top, to be honest.

It really was a microcosm of the fact Australia is somehow no longer mature enough to debate opposing view amicably.
