Looks like Ben jacobs has a more senior role than first thought. Wasn’t he named as a development coach when he came on board? Also is this the first time in his career Caracalla has been in charge of defence and setting up our team defensive structures. Would’ve much preferred we went and sourced someone who is an actual defensive coach to look after this area.

Nah they didn't specify. Some interviews sounded more like an assistant coach and sometimes more of a development role, but it's tricky because the entire club is on a development bent so everyone is talking about development regardless of their job title. It's been a bone of contention ever since, hasn't been clear cut until now.

As an afl member (essendon aligned) I’d be all for it. Nightmare trying to get seats at marvel, and that’s while we’ve been horrible.
Marvel is easier to get to if you want to drive, the parking situation is easier, and it's easier on the train if you're coming from up north as well (which I suppose most people are).

But the actual experience of being at the footy at the MCG is 1000% better, particularly if you can get a seat somewhere on the bottom 3 levels, plus home game at the grand final ground etc

Yeah marvel definitely easier for commute for a large chunk of the supporter base. Just the actual seating has the mcg on top for me, one day when we’re finally rolling again will so hard to get tickets for most games. The mcg is elite, but when essendon has 50k in the house at marvel it’s pretty good. Don’t think I’ve ever heard a roar like the one after the siren when we beat north after the tippa goal in 2019.

My seat at Marvel is better than my mcg one. So I kinda prefer it that way too but nothing beats a packed mcg

early days there was a hawks v dons game there that was the first docklands sell out.
44k or something like that. was proper loud.

light years the G for me though. its the one ground I don't mind when the crowd numbers are down.
used to be enjoyable going to a Dees game and being able to spread out a bit.
And there's something about the ground when the crowd numbers fill out as well. it feels like an occasion. At Marvel, it just feels cramped

THorburn qutting all roles next year including the church chair role.

Andrew Thorburn to quit all board jobs, take a year off

Former National Australia Bank boss Andrew Thorburn is quitting all his board jobs from February and taking a year off, following several months of backlash over the beliefs of the church he attends.
This includes his roles as chairman of ethical investing outfit Sentient Impact Group and chairman of his controversial church, City on a Hill, and as a director of non-for-profit impact investors For Purpose Investment Partners and community organisation The Fathering Project.

Mr Thorburn already spectacularly stepped down as CEO of Essendon Football Club in October after just 24 hours in the job, after public outcry over his religious beliefs.
City on a Hill is a conservative church which espouses Old Testament views of homosexuality as a “sexual immorality” and condemns abortion.
Mr Thorburn publicly slammed “the public square” for not tolerating his “personal Christian faith” at the time, reportedly hiring lawyers to work on a potential religious discrimination case.

As this newspaper’s Rear Window column reported last month, staff at Sentient Impact Group were also disgruntled over his continued tenure as chairman given his religious views. The Australian Financial Review understands staff were told of his resignation yesterday.
“Andrew will be stepping down from all his formal responsibilities, effective February 2023,” a spokesman for Mr Thorburn said.
“He will be taking a year off to spend time with family, and to rest and reflect.”
He took a similar extended period of leave from NAB in December 2018, just as banking royal commission chief Kenneth Hayne was writing the final report into the sector’s misconduct which ultimately cost Mr Thorburn his job.
A source close to the embattled former executive said he had run out of steam after a year in the media spotlight, and was focused on becoming a grandfather this coming April.

Maybe try quitting getting your stupid ******* head in the news as well Thorburn
Is there a quote from Thorburn recently ? There are none in that article so it is hardly Thorburn talking to the media.

He should run water during summer training if he wants to volunteer.
I don't think he wants to volunteer.

I think he wants to be turned away from a role in which there can be no perceived conflict of interest between the footy club and his own horrific beliefs. Then he goes through some sort of mental health crisis in which he has to take a break from all of his roles. Then he can claim compensation.

agree - i just prefer those that can float their own boats without trying to scuttle others’
I prefer everyone gets to float their own boat , rainbow or not.

Joint statement: EFC & Andrew Thorburn

A statement on behalf of Essendon and Andrew Thorburn.

This is a statement made on behalf of Essendon Football Club and Andrew Thorburn.

On 3 October 2022, the Club appointed Andrew Thorburn as its CEO. Regrettably, Mr Thorburn had to give up his position the next day. The Club and Mr Thorburn are pleased to announce that the dispute between them has been resolved. A critical element of this resolution is to enable a wider community conversation on the importance of freedom of conscience, religion and belief and how to have respectful dialogue between people with different views and perspectives. All people should be respected and welcomed in workplaces and community organisations. No-one should have to choose between their faith or sexuality, and their employment.

Further, everyone should be able to openly express their personal position, in a respectful way, without fear and still feel that they belong. Genuine diversity and inclusion also includes people of faith. The Club acknowledges that the events of October should have been handled better and apologises for the impact it had on Mr Thorburn, his family and others.

Both parties consider that elements of the public commentary at the time were extreme and wrong and counter-productive to the respectful community dialogue they agree is critical. Mr Thorburn remains welcome at the Club. The Club reiterates that he is a person of integrity who treats others, whether at work or elsewhere, with dignity and respect. He has a strong track record of leadership including with respect to diversity and inclusion of LGBTIQ and other minority groups.

As part of a commitment to genuine diversity and inclusion, and to show leadership in this area, the Club has agreed to make a donation to an Ethics Institute. The Institute will prepare an independent paper on how sporting organisations can build inclusive communities recognising freedoms including those relating to race, religion and sexuality.

Will be very interested to find out which right wing religiously-affiliated ‘ethics institute’ this money is going to to produce an ‘independent paper’ that vindicates Thorburn and his ilk.
