I see it as the opposite - he either doesn't rate our attacking defenders (Dempsey, Hocking etc.) or wants them in the middle. I think we'll see Heppell, Myers, Dempsey, Browne, Hocking etc. all rotating through HBF/midfield throughout the year.

I agree Ben

Posted in the Heppell thread that the coaches probably want to see Dempsey in a more offensive role rather than deffending first, attacking second.

Perhaps Dempsey on a HFF with Zaka on a wing?

I quite like how we drafted. It appears that Hird is confident in our current midfield.

With Heppell and Brown on the HBF it gives players like Dempsey, Myers, Stanton, Hocking more time in the midfield instead of having them fill spots in the backline.

Correct me if i wrong but we have about 17 players out of contract at the end of next year.

It seem to me that the best option for Hirdy & co was to pick the "best available" kids this year and use trade period next year to lure an established gun to our midfield.

stuff that bs

i seem to recall a time clubs developed their own 'guns' & said 'guns' remained loyal with the odd exception of course -

those days arent dead yet & this draft has given me some confidence this group just might be alright

Dodoro said the Bombers' second-round selection, Ariel Steinberg from Mildura via the Bendigo Pioneers, provides a genuine x-factor.Essendon believes the 18-year-old, who spent 2009 playing American football in Canada while on a student exchange, is an untapped talent.
"He can play up forward and I think he can play as a mid as well," said Dodoro.
"Him and (George) Horlin-Smith were the two unknown players of the draft."
"We just felt that at (pick) 31 the draft started to thin out and we thought that with him we could find someone who had some special traits."
"It's a little bit of a punt, but if you watch him in isolation he certainly can play."

Interesting thoughts from Dodoro on Steinberg, obviously someone they see as having a lot of upside, but also hoping he can move in to the midfield!!
Would be interesting to see how he develops.

Being one of the few that have seen most of them play a lot

Heppell can play midfield and did so in the latter half of the year really well.

Browne can also play midfield and has done so well during a quarter here and there. the used him off half back a lot to take Gaffs role in the side delivering the ball coming out of defence.

Ross has played midfield a fair bit changing in the back half .

That is 3 mids out of 5 picks. I think the theme was pick some mids who already have some sort of defensive mind set and do not just run in front of the ball ;)

I wonder why that was? ;)

I think we are going to love these additions, particularly with the defensive skills and the delivery skills
