St.Kilda left Junction Oval for Moorabin before most of us born.
There was some fanciful romantic talk by some outsiders of St.Kilda returning to St.Kilda after generations but was never realistic at all. Football was never in planning for this cricket Victoria plan. They left Seaford to goto Moorabin as their training base for future.

always found it a bit of a laugh whenever Fitzroy hosted St.Kilda at Junction Oval in the 80s

would have been good to have a downsized version of Waverley after 1999, say around 55k, but with upgraded/modern facilities.... a ground that Hawthorn and St.Kilda could proudly call home

Yep, although I prefer 65,000 which is better to cater for not being forced to be educated to think reserved seats is a need. Rather than downsized just build another ground out that way. Of course the costs could be a whole other story but in terms of football in Greater Melbourne region a ground out that way was something to build on, not abandon and add another ground in the city with smaller capacity. It did not need to be a homeground for just one or two clubs. In fact it was a neutral ground for most of it's existence. Every club used to play one or two home games out there.
Biggest crowd to a game there was 93,000 or something one public holiday.
Only meant to hold 75,000 so turnstile people really stuffed up.

Yeah, was a bit weird. From memory there was a St.Kilda Cricket Club and Fitzroy Football Club affiliation or some sports club membership my Dad had. But St.Kilda Football Club played nowhere near there. Was the ground for Fitzroy and on Sunday's VFA football. Where they used to play the VFA grand final. Was one of my favourite grounds to watch as a kid on tv. Had a real old world charm about it. I cherish I got to see a game there once when I was old enough to goto football myself. Went to my first Fitzroy v Carlton game there. Think they beat us too. Barwick and Conlan probably ran over us in last quarter. May have been the last season Fitzroy played there. Was sad to see them end up having to play at other grounds like our own, Collingwood's ground and Footscray's.

Interesting that princes park will get lights for the opening women's game

Is a night game a first? I always thought the locals managed to get them stopped
The Socceroos played AC Milan there in the 90s under lights. The ground also had a cricket pitch spray painted green, hoping AC wouldn't notice... the game was also about 73 minutes long or something random too.

I wonder where the lights are hanging from?

My interest in women's football borders zero but the free entry could be a good chance to scope out the ground again.

No it wasnt. It was at the Western Oval.

Did start at Western Oval. There were a couple of years it was at Princes Park in early 2000s.
I am pretty sure the funny clip where two fat bastards run after the ball (Brownless and BT) is from one of those years.

My apologies it was at Princes Park in 2001-2002. Was at Kardinia Park for a year before that, and Adelaide Oval in 1999.

It might be that the lower lighting levels expected for womens isnt as big a issue for the locals, like whitten oval at the exhibition game last year the lighting is significantly less than the near day like levels the afl expect.

Don't know, but they've continued to wobble since then. 2002/3......

The wobbles were post 1958 to 1990, i saw them lose 1970, 77, 79, 80 add a few others i cant remember, then when they won in 1990 with one of the worst ever teams to win a GF - with the exception of Daicos, Millane, Brown and a couple of others, but it was no great team.

Colliwobbles buried. :):)

Then it was the Cats turn.
1989, 1992, 1994 and 1995.

There was some false economics going on with etihad. AFL clubs lost money with smaller crowds but time after time a league, rugby even the vfl final and legends game had small crowds - surely they didnt all lose money, the VFL in particular would have been sent broke.

Also victorian fans appetite for games against none victorian teams is increasing. These crowds are slowly building. by the time a third stadium was realised, there'd be no need
