One of the umpires said on field to North players: "We don't pay free kicks to duckers like Lindsay".

Brad was asked whether Lindsay copped rough treatment tonight and he said yes, but the umpires said to the players he's a ducker, we're not going to pay them. Brad seemed visibly upset about this, and which he should.

Clearly North are one of the worst clubs in terms of the number of players who stage for frees, led by Thomas himself, but singling out one player is actually quite a stupid move by the umpires.

Sure, apply some discretion if a player has a habit of staging, but there was a pretty clear free kick today that wasn't paid. If that's because "Thomas staged before and we don't pay him free kicks" that's downright disgraceful. They shouldn't even look for names or faces.

Everyone knows the umps have their favourites as well as their whipping boys and much of it is influenced by media reaction. Having said that, I don't know if bringing this up in the wake of a close loss is particularly smart. Especially when the main reason they lost is clear to all and sundry, poor conversion in front of goal.

It's good on one hand because sometimes Lindsay doesn't play in the right spirit. But just shows how p-weak umpires are, clearly the other week against the swans has got into their heads.

Umps are protected. Earlier in the year they said they don't pick on or favour particular players but plenty of times we've seen that discounted.

The MacMillan decision was fantastic umpiring though and I'd even like to see MacMillan fined for staging. This should lead to less players ducking* in future.

*i don't believe the Shuey/Selwood arm raise is a bad thing, frustrating yes but it can be countered.
