Having seen him play live, it makes absolutely no difference imo

The impact of this will be seen in time, but inside midfielders these days are much more the Jobe Watson-Josh Kennedy types. Size matters over the journey when your role is playing as a battering ram in hand to hand combat at stoppages.

Smaller midfielders are a dying breed with the players the size of Platten, Naley, Antrobus, Weigthman (who were great midfielders), now playing as small forwards.

Sam Mitchell disproves your theory.

i know it's a Wines vs Crouch thread, i was just saying that i rate Crouch higher than O'Meara, who all believe is a better prospect at this stage than Wines, ergo, i rate Crouch much higher than Wines.

At the time of the minidraft, a couple of clubs recruiters actually mentioned to Rendell that they would have selected Crouch ahead of O'Meara. Both will be absolute guns, with O'Meara having a higher ceiling, but perhaps a greater chance of not living up to the hype.

Wines is probably a great pick up for Port and exactly the type of player they needed to support Ebert around the stoppages.

Not so sure about that. In this draft alone, Viney, Hrovat and Kennedy are three small midfielders with a lot of ability who hit the packs pretty hard. I can see all of them becoming at least serviceable players at AFL level. Don't focus on the height, look at the numbers and the performance because that's what counts more

So does Marc Murphy

My only concern with Crouch playing next year would be his ability to break into the Crows midfield. Wines into Port seems fairly straight forward, as does Viney into Melbourne, but Crouch into a top 4 side doesn't seem so clear cut.

Where will Crouch play next year, when in the side ??? More of a HFF than midfield ???

Maybe I'm being biased, but I don't think their midfield is suuuuuuuper deep. Dangerfield, Thompson and Sloane are A-graders, Vince is B+ and van Berlo is the captain so he won't be going anywhere, but I could see Crouch overtaking players like Matthew Wright or Richard Douglas and pushing them back to the forward line.

Sam Jacobs and Taylor Walker were the two main reasons for their strength last year IMO. Neither will affect Crouch's JS (although having Jacobs hitting the ball down his throat won't hurt his scores when he is in the side).

Wright had a super year this season, so he's not taking his place any time soon. Douglas is probably in the biggest trouble in terms of losing his spot.

Looks like the adelaide media has done its job properly again. This crouch kid has gone from 'talented' to 'superman' without playing a game. I also recall at the time that the crows were expected to take kennedy over crouch.

Im sure crouch will be a top player, but to suggest was better than omeara is simply ridiculous (as a jnr).

Crouch v wines.... Who the hell knows. Hopefully Wines is as far as it goes so far.

The Adelaide Media is ****ing dumb... Crouch over O'Meara as Jnrs is a pretty stupid claim by them.

Do you Port supporters do anything on BigFooty bar whinge about how "anti-Port" the Adelaide media supposedly are? Newsflash, Crows supporters hate the Adelaide media just as much as you guys do and regard them as absolutely hopeless. I really don't see any reason for you to be up on your high horse about such a non-event with regards to football discussion on BigFooty, especially young 18 year olds who most of the Adelaide media have NFI about.

Besides, the only supporter here suggesting Crouch was a better junior than O'Meara was a Melbourne supporter.

I purely mentioned that a couple of clubs discussed with our recruiting manager at the time that they would have taken Crouch ahead of O'Meara. Whether that means they rated him as a better player, or felt that he was purely a safer a bet 12 months out from their draft year, I don't know. Whilst I haven't seen a heap of either player, I'd personally still rate O'Meara higher.

Just so you know, the Crows weren't ever particularly interested in Kennedy for the MD. There was a lot of fuss about Kennedy mid year after he "dominated" a couple of SANFL games, which fueled speculation that we would target him, but whilst we interviewed him, we didn't come close to selecting him in the MD. As soon as it was announced that we were in discussions with GWS for the 2nd MD pick, it was clear, if you'd followed the right media sources, that Crouch was the one we were after, and not one of the local boys.

Definitely a valid concern. Whilst guys like Wines, Viney, O'Meara and Whitfield enter sides down the bottom of the ladder, Crouch enters a top 4 side with quite deep midfield rotations and a wealth of similar style players. If Crouch was more of an outside midfielder like Whitfield, or had shown talent as a small forward like Kennedy, he might have had an easier run at it. As it is he is up against guys like Lyons, Riley and Kerridge, who had equal to or better seasons in the SANFL as Crouch, and all of whom have AFL experience, just to fight for spot that may or may not even be available. Crouch will probably be the best of the lot of them, but at this stage he is the youngest and least experienced, and with our side pressing hard for a premiership, we will be selecting our best 22 each and every week, so Crouch will not be gifted any games for "developments sake", like a few of the afore mentioned players may be.

Douglas hell yes, Wright no way. He had a great 2012 and was our most improved player.
Douglas is going to have to learn to play well up forward or he's going to miss out.

I would think that Crouch would make the midfield rotations quite early on and he should perform very well. Personally I would not be surprised if he ended up as your third choice mid behind Dangerfield and Thompson (probably next year though), he will be a very good player imo. Given the choice between Wines and Crouch, I would take Crouch but it would be a very close call, Crouch is the better inside mid imo but not by much, has more speed, but lacks some of the spread and outside game that Wines has, this should develop over time though.

Also Crouch is a very good prospect and has a ton of ability, but O'Meara is on a whole other level, he has the potential to be the best player in the comp imo, and it would be a disappointment if he wasn't a top 10 player.

Yeah comes across as a bit biased. You forgot to mention porps going into the midfield and also Brodie Smith. Both Vince and Douglas are club champions, but I would agree they aren't elite, similar infact to Boak in ability.
The reason for the Crows strength in 2012 was all their players lifted, incl sauce and Tex. Players like Reily, Callinan, Shaw, Talia etc all stepping up. Adelaide's midfield was one of the best last season with both Danger and Thomo AA and big chances for the Brownlow. No team is going to have a midfield depth with every player being Elite a-graders. Infact a lot of lower teams like Port don't have a a-grader in their whole midfield. I am happy with our Midfield and Crouch will add another hard inside player to our roster.

I hope Wines comes along great. After hearing him been interviewed he comes across as a great kid and someone you would want to do well. I am a little interested in why Melb passed on him. He and Viney are best mates and Melb were really interested in a midfield with both of them in it. They then took Toumpas ahead of him.
Anyone have any insight into why Melb changed their minds?

Toumpas was rated as a better prospect and fits a need for Melbourne

Happy with wines :)

Yeah Douglas is no where near Boak. Vince had A grade potential, but seemed happy being a solid B grader
