Does anyone know what the story is with him?

If he gets drafted by a Victorian team, which would be likely, if he is touted a top 5 prospect....will he be loyal and stay there or is he going to ask to be traded to Port after his first 2 years are up???

Could be a risky pick....I am guessing he may go through to pick 14 or so and Port will get a steal.

Why are people constantly proposing that a player has to go to a hometown team, or they will demand a trade?

Bret Thornton wanted a trade to Hawthorn last year. Jordan Russell was apparently going to walk to Port Adelaide in the PSD. Carlton held fast, and both guys stayed at Carlton.

People have spoken about Cooney, Pavlich, Wells and many others going home year after year, but they never have. Players tend to remain loyal to their teams.

Ebert will likely be drafted to a non-SA team, and he will likely stay there.

Totally agree with Vinnie. Out of all the draftees there is only a very very minor preportion that seak a trade after only 2 years. Fergus Watts was one example... I would think this thread was started because of the "Bryce Gibbs theory".

i wouldnt count on Ebert sayaing at a non - SA team .. he would love to play in the same team as his cousin after a couple of years..

and his uncle only stayed in melbourne for a year ..

The AFL was different then. It's a professional competition where players need to harden up and play for the team who gave them the opportunity to play at the highest level by drafting them.

If Port or Crows want Ebert then they will need to trade to upgrade their first round pick and pay the right price for him.

Fergus Watts returning to Victoria is a little different as he was able to threaten PSD (not sure if he actually did, but it is a mechanism used, for example last year with Polak). Unless SA teams finish bottom of the ladder they would need to come up with a suitable trade to get him to move home IF he wanted to go.

So you are saying Port will finish last in two years time so they can lure him back via the PSD.

Every single draftee wants to play for the team they barrack for, but once they arrive at the club that drafts them and make friends with their teamates and have the support structures set up around them, they naturally feel a loyalty to their adopted club. Unless they have trouble fitting in and become a bit of an outcast, they'd be having too much fun to want to go home - and Ebert seems like a very mature and likeable lad.

That's correct.

If they really perform well, then they're going to be worth a first rounder if they do want to go back home. If they don't perform, teams won't give them an opportunity.

In most cases the club will do ok out of it.

I think he would enjoy playing alongside his cousin at the power. Wouldnt surprise me if he came back after his 2nd contract. His family has a long history involving Port Adelaide and he stated on radio earlier this year that it would be a dream to play for Port in the AFL.

Doesnt mean it will happen though

somewhat misleading and incorrect. what we have is a system that prohibits realistic opportunities for moving elite young players - has approximately zero point mczero degrees of jack to do with loyalty.

using your example Thornton wanted to move, but couldn't. was he loyal?

No, but my point wasn't that players are always loyal to their teams, it was that they are generally loyal, but even when they DO want to move, often they are unable to get anything done, so the odds of losing a player when you don't want to are negligible.

Formerly known as the "Pavlich theory" and prior to that the "Johnno Brown theory"which has since been discredited.

This one is right up there with the Brendan Goddard "He barracked for us as a kid theory"............which has had equally patheitc outcomes in terms of coming to fruition.

Yeah but not every club can take time out to finish bottom every year so they can redraft their own players with the #1 PSD pick if necessary.

He wouldn't fall past the Crows though. You can smell their desire to get us back for the Cornes brothers.

Just a minute, are you guys saying that despite baracking for Essendon as a kid Dal Santo won't be coming to Essendon. My heart is breaking. :p

His uncle went back after when he realised how hard it was to get a kick in the VFL.

Didn't manage it too often.

bull ****ing shit.

came fourth in the best and fairest playing on a half forward flank travelling from adelaide every week to play
