Sheppard was regarded as a good run and carry player with great disposal!

So, why is Woosha turning him into a defender?

Play him on the wing where he belongs.

Re: Sheppard confusion!

Was primarily a defender in juniors AFAIK. Just moved into the middle for Easts right at the end of '09. I think our plans for him lie further up the ground.

its always good for young guys to be played as a defender to teach them to be accountable. Jack Riewoldt was played at full back before being drafted. I dont think he was as bad on the weekend as people on here are saying, a couple of bad kicks but i think he did a couple of really good things too.

i was looking at the draft again today, thinking about where BS is at the mo, other than scully, trengove, martin, morabito, fyfe maybe throw Nason, jetta, pittard in there, tapscott is starting to show the goods no real stand outs.

Hopefully start to work his way into the game a bit more, maybe after another preseason

"Second year blues" are not uncommon.
Don't rate him as a backman. Our preference to get Hurn, and when fit, Waters, free usually means that Sheppard needs to stay tight on an opponent, something he struggles to do.
Wing is where he belongs and wing is where he'll probably end up when Embley retires.
But right now, as others have said, neither his form nor Rosa/Embley's form warrant him to get precedence on the wing.

good runner with decent disposal.

he'll be important to us because he is a potential line-breaker, and we don't have many of his type.

needs more size at the moment. still too frail.

Not built well enough for AFL footy at the moment, but good signs if he can be so slight and more than hold his own.

Does anyone know the wraps on him coming into the AFL? Was he drafted because of his pace/above average disposal?

Just interested, as while he does things well, he doesn't seem to have any 'elite' attributes as you would expect from a top 10 pick

Woosha's theory is "good players can play anywhere" and I think he's keen to develop him as a tight checking HBF as opposed to a winger.

Most considered him to go around the 10-25 range pre draft. He was known for his run and carry from the back half with good disposal. Produced a high beep test and recorded well in the sprints. Modern footballer, versatile and a good size.

The impediment to him playing as s winger is teh mentality. He doesn' have that Embers mentality of being ahead of the play ready to receive that good wingers need. The problem is that East Freo aren't playing him on the wing either, so don't know how he'll improve as a winger...

Good wingers know when to go forward and when to go back. Embley has a seagull reputation but you also find him down back allot intercepting marks.

Oh I completely agree, but being able to position forward is key to being an attacking wingman, and Shepp needs to develop that skill.

I think he needs 2 WAFL seasons before we destroy him by playing him in the seniors with clearly an under developed body. This guy ( and we ) would benefit from living in a gym and made to box hard core to toughen him up, then when we see him flying into hard contest's in the WAFL..bring him back.

Also I think he suffers from Deer in the Headlight syndrome under pressure not unlike Nicoski when he was in the backline copping too much pressure.

If we do persist with him, maybe give him some time on the wing or better yet..small forward to release LeCras into the midfield.
