Toast Brett Deledio

It’s something I’ve never understood. I could see anyone at all footballer, movie star whatever it is and I never approach them. Why would I?I don’t know them.
Even if for some reason i have to speak to them I just pretend I have no idea who they are unless it’s brought up or they’re introduced or something. The worst ones are the people who go up and say “Brett... Brett.. can I get a photo?” And then do the cringey selfie.
I get it sometimes it’s a club function or something and then it’s different but personally even then that’s just not for me, I see it more of a thing for the kids.
But you’re right sometimes you’ll see some poor bugger eating out or at the zoo with their family or something and people just waltz up to them.
That’s just ******* weird.

It may me cringe so much when recently on a Richmond supporters facebook page it had someone post a photo of Dylan Grimes sitting eating breakfast at a cafe on a Sunday morning.
It was done via selfie and clearly Dylan didn't give permission to do so but it's sad people pull that kind of crap.
Would certainly make a player uncomfortable being out in public.

Just on another theme-Lids retirement brings to an end the worst draft in our history- 2004.
Thanks Gregs (Beck and Miller) for an all time classic cockup.

Buddy the last man standing (just) from that draft if Dunne and Lewis hang up the boots.

Anyway whatever way you look at Deledios departure we ended up getting some good draft picks and at this stage looked to have picked well

much already said
but when the cupboard was bare he was our top dog
hunted by opposition sides hoping to cut the head off the snake … he wasn't built for that
but he still performed and his play involvements often kept us in games

he was the leader in the Cotch and Dusty early days and has some part in shaping them in what they are today

only viewing from the outside , it looked like a failing body and an inept 2016 wore him down
judge him on the 2015 and before

the "fails" all got picked up by other clubs
Pattinson - Hawks
Meyer - Port
Polo - Saints
Tambling - Crows

suggesting those clubs saw something in them

Pattinson played many great , BOG , games in the VFL , but couldn't bridge the gap between VFL and AFL
Polo grabbed 3 brownlow votes in his first game
and Meyer and Tambling had impressive highlights packages but consistency wasn't their friend

there is an element of luck with every draft selection

these guys were close to being regular AFL players but not to be

yes the selecting could have been better and no doubt there might have been some clues in their U18 form the current recruiters could have picked up on

but not to be ignored , I don't think we groomed young talent well then either , the perfect storm

I'm loving the current midas touch the recruiters currently have and hope it doesn't end any time soon
a lot of very good things are happening at Punt Rd

Yep now compared to then is poles apart. It’s taken a while but we are kicking goals with player recruitment and development

Exactly ...... some fans simply have no respect and I've seen it.
Funnily enough (and won't be popular), the only player I have seen blatantly snub fans and ignore the supporter base was #4 during the pre-season camp in Bendigo a few years ago. When the players ended their training session, all bar one stayed out on the oval to sign autographs. Same bloke went straight to the rooms and eventually headed to the team bus with headphones on.
I bet the posters potting Lids won't #4.

Saying I have no respect for players is absolute rubbish, other than Hampson I have never verbally bashed any player on BF, I challenge you to find one!

Its actually lacking respect to suggest that I have been disrespectful, it was an honest comment that I never felt that warm about lids, in saying that he was a really good footy player in his prime no doubt.

Mike Sheahan said that Deledio never fulfilled his talent... bit disrespectful considering Mike Sheahan few years ago rated him above Rance, Cotch, Riewoldt & Martin in Richmond's top 50 players of all time. Amazing what perception of a fizzled out career can do & Richmond going on to win a Premiership. It shouldn't change the fact that he stood out at times over those players when he played for us people have short memories.

A brilliant player cut down right as he was reaching his peak.

The second half of his 2014 season was amazing and his 2015 season was brilliant too.

Makes me wonder how he would've done without injury and without being shifted around the ground to cover gaping holes like when he had to play as a full time defender.

Happy he left because he was done. Hypothetically had he stayed and had we somehow made the 2017 grand final, he wouldn't have even played.

Hope he's back for finals, but doubt it.

Here's to Brett, one of my all time favourite players, a joy to watch

I agree with Mike, but the reason Lids didn't fulfill his talent was purely because of injury.

Deledio was amazing in 2012 when we finally started to play good footy, it's just a shame that was also around the time that he started to break down, probably due to being run into the ground and having overly high expectations/responsiblity at such a young age.

Him regaining fitness in 2014 was crucial to us clawing back from the death and making that 8th spot.

AN injured Deledio in 2015 missed 5(?) matches and still came 3rd in the JD medal.

It's easy to forget how good he was, especially since he spent so many years playing in a poor side and being criticised for not carrying the team enough.

Always looked a stone cold certainty to play 300 games. After #200 he had a brilliant run home in 2014 during our run to the finals, then an AA year in 2015. He was in his prime and another 50 games of that form would've sealed his reputation, but injuries killed him.

Sheahan was always prone to chopping and changing. Generally critical of Deledio throughout his career, he labelled him "elite" in 2010 after he injured his arm against Sydney and came back onto the ground to turn the game. He subsequently made another four AA squads, so he didn't do much wrong after that.

If Deledio wasn't an "A-grader" - whatever that is - I haven't seen many at Richmond.
It's easy to forget how good he was, especially since he spent so many years playing in a poor side and being criticised for not carrying the team enough.

It's the Richo syndrome - star player can't always get his sh!t team over the line and is downgraded.

A moment that typified his chronic underselling was at the end of the Brock McLean tin-arse goal match against Carlton in 2012. We're a kick down with seconds to play, Deledio grabs the ball at the centre bounce, sidesteps three opponents in a phone box and hoofs it 70m to the goal square off one step. Long forgotten... no win, no glory.

We also ended up getting Ivan Maric from that draft and one lucky fellow who ended up in a premiership side with the Swans.

So favorite deledio moments?

Some moments for me
5 Goals v the pies in 07
Match Winning last quarter v the pies R7 2015
Deledio beats hawks 2015
His pick up and handball for matt white goal v lions 2008
His stop and sidestep v the hawks in 05
His run and dash vs the blues round 1 2013

Yeah, obviously he would have a bit of campaigner in him...but when that siren went in the GWS final in 2017 cotchy ran straight to lids. of course cotchy is a legend, but with so much happening and the mayhem he bolted to brett. doubt anyone would run straight to someone if they were a campaigner or traitor.

You can actually see Cotch acknowledge Cameron Ling as he runs past him there too. Lingy wanted to grab him for a chat but it was clearly more important to get to Lids first.

What's really cool when you meet someone like that is just to be really casual about chatting to them instead of being like "OMG YOU'RE BRETT DELEDIO!!!!"
Best example I can think of is Aaron Hamill. He was in the place I was working at one day years ago with his brother. I served his brother and Aaron was on the phone while we did it but Aaron had to pay. When he got off the phone and came over to pay all I asked him was simply how was his pre season going. (It was Jan/Feb ish.) He was really happy to chat about it and seemed genuinely pleased to be asked. Billy Slater was the same. If you don't slobber all over them it's usually fine.

He used to live about 500m from me, between me and my usual supermarket. Saw him quite a few times. Wish I could now. I would LOVE to run into one of our premiership players and simply say "Thank you!"

Not even close to 2005 ... Oakley Nicholls, Hughes, Casserly ... three duds of the highest order who played one good game between them (Cleve).
Deledio nearly gives 2004 a pass on his own. Tambling and McGuane had their moments and Polo played more good games - about four - than the 2005 bunch on his own.
