* Penn graduate with a masters degree in computer science has been arrested.

The murder of this CEO highlights the anger and the danger for health insurers. Shot in midtown Manhattan - probably the most heavily surveilled public place in the country other than DC and with a budget of $5B.

The father-of-two had travelled from Minnesota to attend a conference for UnitedHealthcare — a huge health insurance company where he was the CEO.

Its parent company, UnitedHealth Group, is America's fourth largest money-maker, after Walmart, Amazon and Apple.

It was set to present investors with a revenue forecast for the coming year of $US450 billion ($705 billion).

CCTV shows Thompson, 50, approaching the doorway of the conference venue, the Midtown Hilton hotel, at 6:45am.

Suddenly, a man wearing a black hoodie appears in the corner of the frame.

He raises a gun, which appears to be fitted with a hitman-style silencer, aims at Thompson and fires two rounds.

Investigators found three words written on bullet casings found at the murder scene.

"Deny." "Defend." "Depose."

been reading a bit on this case. think it's pretty obvious that the guy had his escape entirely pre-organised. that's the only way he would have left dna evidence at the scene.

my view is that he did not expect the murder to go unsolved, that police already know who he is, but that they do not know where he is. he may well be international at this point, in some non-extradition country. at that stage it doesn't matter how many trace clues he may have left.

What's most interesting about this is why?

My guesses from most likely to least likely:

1. Upset customer who had their own or a family members health claim(s) denied
2. Ex Wife organised it
3. Disgruntled employee
4. Set up own death for insurance payout to kids (maybe some news was going to come out soon that wouldn't hold him in good light)
5. Government inside job for some reason

How would you write on a bullet so that it's still legible after being fired? Does it need to be engraved or something?
I think the shooter has just got lucky so far in his getaway rather than anything heavily calculated or deep conspiracy. Seems doubtful a hitman would operate like this, staying at a hostel and sharing a room with strangers?? No way.

Writing on the casing, not the projectile.

I don’t condone murder but it’s very likely this CEO has cause many deaths through his organisations inhumane profit driven denials of needed healthcare so I also have zero sympathy.

Sadly for many people in the US healthcare is up to the whim of the insurer. They have no recourse if they’re denied, they have no way to change the system, they cannot fight legal battles against multi-billion dollar companies.

Having the healthcare system operate at the whim of shareholder-for-profit companies in a poorly regulated environment is a terrible plan.

The US has the highest healthcare costs of any western country with the worst outcomes. It’s a broken system.

I imagine there’s a number of people over there who might have information on this guy but be keeping it to themselves given the lack of sympathy for the victim.

Bizarrely, this seems to be a real thing. I thought it was a joke when it popped up on social media.

The backpack recovered by the NYPD that allegedly belonged to the suspect wanted in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, only had two items inside: a Tommy Hilfiger jacket and Monopoly money, sources with knowledge of the ongoing investigation told ABC News Saturday.

Surely he's identified soon, given the images are so clear.
This quote made me laugh: "He was a person with a deep sense of empathy and clear passion for improving access to care".

How would you know how he thinks? Yes he was the leader of the organisation, but if he doesn't make shareholders high returns he gets removed from his position. It's got to be quite a difficult job to keep both shareholders, as well as customers always happy

Before you get defensive, I have great sympathy for someone gunned down in the street, simply for doing their job, not to mention his family - no matter how distasteful many find his organisation. Was simply an observation of a quote that goes against everything else that's been posted online, so far.

Was thinking the same, but there’s still a fair bit of conflicting information about which pictures are actually him and which are other people wearing the same clothes.

Given he was not picked up quickly, you would assume he has fled the country.

Maybe he's in Texas? They hate the rich elites and would love exercising their 2nd amendment rights in opposition to tyranny or some such.

Corporate gaslighting 101. It’s quite ridiculous how little execs and C-Suites think of the general public and their ability to smell bullshit.

Sounds like the suspect may have some mental health issues and a grievance against corporate healthcare types.

You can’t cold bloodedly murder someone on the street and take away their Dad. I can empathise with someone effected by a broken health care system but not to the extent of condoning murder.

Agreed. The US Government clearly need to fix the health system which allows these companies to operate this way.

Murdering someone won't actually fix the problems with the health system, he will just be replaced eventually, and the company will just go on.

Especially given that these execs knew they had direct threats against them. Fair bit of arrogance involved to be walking around without security.

Regardless though these types of companies will always push for higher profits, that's the system the US government has fostered. The reality is murdering this guy won't change that, he will be replaced by Christmas.
