Ticked up 5000 beers in Untappd tonight somewhat unexpectedly too

I decided years ago tracking every beer I tried was just a fool's errand!

WheildonTheAxe I realised today that you can also go Sydenham to Redfern on the train in addition to getting to Central on the Metro, so you've got double chances to make any trains so I'd definitely head there at the conclusion.

(Frantically searches to understand the difference between train and metro). I think I'm going to target Redfern (and potentially just get an uber to Redfern if things are looking dicey ).

Hadn't seen that Burnley were closing, that stinks. When I lived in Richmond I'd walk over there, have a few beers and then go to the Royston Hotel afterwards for dinner.

Their current plan is to keep brewing at least (they have a production brewery elsewhere). It still sucks.

The Metro is basically the brand new, faster, more underground, train line. Some Metro stations (Sydenham, Central, Martin Place) share with the existing traditional train station. Others (Waterloo, Gadigal, Barangaroo) are their own specially built station.

The TripView app has a reasonably helpful map. The Metro is the turquoise line:



What's really confused me living in Brisbane now is that the "Metro" system they have built/are building in Brisbane is a BUS network!

I bought a beer based off the brewery's name, it was the same as my wife's maiden name. It was shit.

I bought it again a couple of years later after forgetting about it. It was shit, which reminded me I'd had it before.

That's what convinced me that maybe I need to take some basic recollection prompts.

My massive delay contingency window (based on lived experience) has afforded me an entire afternoon in Sydney (without my family my love dearly and I'm glad they are not here ). I decided to walk from the airport and I ended up escorting Brad Johnson

After a lovely walk through Sydney Park I'm at Future brewing. The Easy Breazy (DDH pale ale 5.5%) is delightful. It's hard to tackle a tap list with five DDH things, mostly over 7.5%) so early though. Would love a session thing.

Quick summary:

• Future: my favourite beer of the day. Super juicy tap list.
• Hahn and Son: average beers but good generalist appeal.
• Wildflower: would've like more time here.
• Pickled Monkey: they only had a lager and pale and the rest were guest taps. The queue was long so left.
• Mixed Tape: loved the selection.
• Philter: been before and love it.
• Bob Hawke: novel venue, decent beers.
• Coming back and Joe winning us the game: priceless.

I won't include the very misleadingly named Brewery bar in OP on this list! Thanks Sydney.

Well, they weren't calling their DDH pales and IPAs juicey/hazy but they certainly weren't dank/bitter west coast styles to me.

Melbourne is so much easier though, because Brisbane's best breweries are both far flung and a lot are difficult to get to without a car.

Unfortunately quite true of Brisbane. My favourite brewery is Happy Valley in Stafford but it's annoying to get to without driving. At least it has another brewery near it (Flat Lizard) much like the brewery pairs elsewhere. I second the recommendation for The Scratch, always has a good selection, which is even more important now that Brewski has closed.

An underrated place for breweries is the Sunshine Coast. Some excellent ones up there like Your Mates, 10 Toes, Blackflag, Brouhaha and Heads of Noosa. But it's even worse than Brisbane for needing a car. Noosa is probably the best place for density of breweries, has Heads of Noosa, Land & Sea and Boiling Pot all near each other.

One of my biggest bugbears. It's as though they think giving us second-rate infrastructure with the name of first-rate infrastructure will magically make it first-rate rather than just being underwhelming.

Oh yeah, anyone from Brissy that ends up in Toowoomba check out Mouse Proof. The beer is good, the food is great (if you like the style), but the space in the old milk factory is utterly fascinating if you like old industrial chic.

Slipstream is outstanding, they just don't miss with their beer. The Red ale is the showstopper! Philter xpa on tap is bloody delicious, only found it at the Oxford St Taphouse in Bulimba. I long for Burleigh Brewing to bring back My Wife's Bitter- great English ALE and their 28 Pale Ale was fantastic, can't find it anywhere. My first Feral Hop Hog blew my mind to craft beer many years ago. As my palate has matured, it becomes harder to find a beer that smacks you with hops, like they once did. Would love any suggestions!

The slipstream red is my all time favourite red I think. Also on the red ladder:

2. Molly Rose Mr Fox (RIP, no longer made)
3. Philter Red
4. King River Brewing Red IPA - new addition with a bullet
5. Bodriggy Gongim Red IPA (pretty sure no longer made as well)

Honourable mention to the Co-Conspirators red ale and double red. Co-Conspirators did a great West Coast a while back, super bitter but still fresh - worth trying whatever they have in their range now if you get to Melbourne, great spot in Brunswick and always lots of variety.

You are absolutely missing Hop Nation's Buzz on that list, that is astounding (as is their NA version if you're into that).

I would add in Mountain Culture's double red IPA (which is connected in heritage to the Former Tenant, if that still exists).

Honorable mentions, love shack's midstrength red ale. Vanhalla (RIP) also did a great mid red IPA.The Red Nut (bent spoke) also great.

The buzz is a good shout, happy for it to replace bodriggy’s.

Controversially - I don’t love the red nut? Still an enjoyable beer but when I lived around the corner from the bentspoke brewpub in Canberra I pretty exclusively ordered everything else, obviously crankshaft and cluster 8. Some of their super hoppy stuff is great too.

They went through an IPA phase, then settled into easy drinking. New (big) brewery/taproom in Newcastle. That's their main venue now. From what I can tell they're doing well, but matured into a broad base shallow beer niche closer to what Stone and Wood was but more diversified.
