IOC be reluctant to award Melbourne the games

Nobody will award an important sporting event to 'the sporting capital of Australia' ever again.

Olympics imposible in any case as they now have to be held between July/September. Only Qld could host them without being too cold for top-class outdoor sport/spectating.

Sydney Perth aren't that cold where it's a major problem

Both too cold for a 'Summer Games' - and Sydney likely too wet

BNE - Jul 22 Aug 23 Sep 25 - also possibly rainy
I get its not ideal however it isn't that cold where not possible. Not like it's snowing or freezing.

Yeah, incompetent governments not properly funding the games have nothing to do with the joke that will be Brisbane 2032…
The amount of funding isn't the issue.

Qld govt is doing so well, it apparently can afford to spend $3b on an athletics track in the middle of nowhere with only 14k permanent seats.

Fortunately the opposition have spoken up about how dumb that is, right? Nope. Gutless and clueless as usual.

Reserve judgement until state elections over

I loved attending athletics at QSAC/QEII - Australia's biggest permanent athletics stadium not stolen by footy codes. 50,000 capacity - easily increased. With the required warm-up track right next door.

It's over 50 years old so some facilities do need upgrading - but why start from scratch when you already have something that can be improved fairly cheaply.

Brisbane doesn't need a new stadium built for athletics which can be quickly ripped down for a non-Olympic sport like NRL.

Starting from scratch means you can pick a premium location close to the city and major public transport hubs.

The QSAC option will still be extremely costly--it'll just look horrendously cheap and nasty, and then be mostly torn down afterward.

Here's what Brisbane actually needs: a new world class oval stadium with 50k+ seats, which btw could also be used for the athletics in 2032. The only reason this won't (or may not) happen is because some small-minded people would rather embarrass the nation than inadvertently help the AFL/Lions.

No it’s because the state government bid for the games, while lying about the expected cost, after lying about cost blowouts on multiple projects. Then a cost of living crisis hit and the locals don’t want to wear the excessive associated costs, when there is a shit ton of people who can’t even find a roof to put over their heads.

a premium location close to the city
There are no 'premium locations' left close to the city, Unless you demolish a bunch of homes, schools, businesses and cause road chaos for about 5 years.

Sorry Brisbane Lions fans - it's not all about you.

They're still going to spend billions on a 14,000-seat venue, before paying exorbitant costs on public transport to get fans there. They also spent money on a review, and then ignored the recommendations, lol.

So how exactly is it about being fiscally responsible?

Nonsense. If you want to talk about road chaos, wait until the AFL haters put 2032's main Olympic stadium nowhere near a train station.

Yep, they’ve gone for the cut price option because the new premier read the room and has gone for the cheapest option. He doesn’t care about legacy right now and most of the Queensland population don’t.

They haven't gone for the cheapest option, given they've also committed to half-baked upgrades to Suncorp and the Gabba.

What would be a cheaper option? And Lang Park and the Gabba need upgrades as they are required for other sports?

And who are the small minded people you originally referred to?
The Gabba needs $500 million just to stay operational through to 2032. The cost to extend its life beyond 2032 and upgrade the venue to modern code compliance is around $1 billion. So they're going to spend $1.5b on just maintaining the Gabba (no capacity or functionality improvements) plus $2b on QSAC (excluding public transport costs).

That's $3.5b. Then it's up to $4b when adding on the upgrade to Suncorp for the opening/closing ceremonies.

The Victoria Park proposal is $3.0b - $3.4b. It's pretty obvious why NRL cheerleaders like John Coates want the more expensive QSAC option, which ensures AFL stays at a small-and-crappy Gabba.

If memory serves, the dates for the Sydney Olympics were chosen because it was historically the driest fortnight in the year.

Qsac won’t be the main stadium, can guarantee it now.
I agree, think that artist rendition was the nail in the coffin for it.

Just so ****ing embarrassing, and got mocked nationally and internationally.

Question, how come when Sydney was given the Olympics there was such celebration etc yet Brisbane didn’t even get a major announcement where the country awaited the decision with baited breath.
