Most people commenting in here don't seem to care about the Olympics or Olympic sports.

They just seem to want a new footy stadium (built via the Olympics) or to try and score some local political points. :(

After seeing the swimming in Paris, the US Olympic trials, and the proposed set-up for LA, I’m not sure how swimming can go back to a “normal” venue again. It’s going to feel so lacklustre now, but I guess we might not have much choice.
Should be at a temporarily converted suncorp stadium

All 3 venues mentioned have a roof.

Suncorp would need one too, especially given its a winter games.

Setting out what the feds have agreed to fund. These 2 links are from the federal Department of Infrastructure and ......

The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games (the Games) will provide extraordinary opportunities for communities across Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and Oceania.

The Games will make South East Queensland even more inclusive, sustainable, connected, liveable and prosperous.

That’s why the Australian Government is investing up to $3.435 billion toward key venue infrastructure. All venues will support the long term needs of growing communities and be ready in time for the Games.

The capped funding amount is allocated to:
  • The Brisbane Arena project - up to $2.5 billion; and [ie Roma St or the Archipelago group Arena proposal]
  • New and upgraded venue projects under the Minor Venues Program - up to $935 million.
The Queensland Government will fund upgrades to QSAC, Suncorp Stadium and the Gabba.

An Intergovernmental Agreement signed by the Australian and Queensland Governments in February 2023 outlines the funding and governance arrangements for venue infrastructure projects for Brisbane 2032.

Projects are subject to validation work, to ensure value for money is achieved and to understand community needs.

11th July statement

The first 5 Minor Venue Program projects have been approved to commence.

The Australian and Queensland Governments have signed a Federation Funding Agreement (FFA) for the first 5 approved Minor Venues Program (MVP) projects for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This is a vital step in supporting the successful delivery of the Games and their legacy.

The FFA outlines the agreed project milestones and Commonwealth payments for the new Chandler Indoor Sports Centre and Precinct works, upgrades to the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, Sunshine Coast Stadium, Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Centre, and the new Sunshine Coast Indoor Sports Centre jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments.
Investment in these venues places a focus on:
  • Accessible, inclusive and fit-for-purpose sporting and community spaces that leave a lasting community legacy
  • Construction targets that achieve sustainability outcomes and increase participation of women, First Nations people, trainees and apprentices.
Both governments will work together to ensure venue projects reflect the long term needs of the community and are ready in time for the Games.

This is what sports are held at the 5 venues mentioned above during Olympics. Some will be used by Paralympics

Indoor Sports Centre and Precinct works,...... Basketball 12,000 capacity
upgrades to the Brisbane Aquatic Centre,...... Diving, Water Polo prelims and Artistic Swimming 4,300 capacity
Sunshine Coast Stadium,............................. Football prelims 20,000 capacity
Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Centre, and..... Mountain Bike
the new Sunshine Coast Indoor Sports Centre Basketball prelims 6,000 capacity

Government don’t seem to be behind it. Just make it happen.

Brett's Wharf is about 3 or 4 times the distance from Queen St Mall to Gabba, but that is still reasonably close to heart of Brisbane., say compared to Sydney Olympic Park.

150 hectares is 1.5km long by 1km wide. That is a hell of a lot of land that close to the CBD on Brisbane River foreshore. Looking at the map, more than half of that is the Royal Qld Golf course. Good luck getting past those members giving up their golf course.

Looks like a long shot. A very long shot.

Huh what? What is 'public funded' anyway?

Do you mean 'taxpayer-funded' or 'government-funded' or 'private-funded'?
Poorly worded 2am post.

This was the line from the 9News report up here I saw, I don’t know how true it is though.

"One of the underlying principles between the state and Commonwealth governments and the IOC that all venues should be publicly owned," Labor minister Di Farmer said.

A 60k oval stadium at Victoria Park is a no brainer.

  • Incorporate it with the Victoria Park parklands upgrade.
  • Makes use of the new cross river rail.
  • Variety of rail stations nearby, Roma St, Exhibition, FV, Central.
  • New Brisbane Metro using the northern busway.
  • Heap of bus options. Everywhere.
  • People can come from and depart to the city or surrounding suburbs via foot. Probably need some large paths over the ICB.

Gives Brisbane more large concert options.

Until recently Suncorp could only host 4 or 6 a year. Currently expanded to 12 or so in a trial (Unsure of the outcome). The major events limit of Suncorp was an issue when I lived there around 2018/19.

Use the Gabba up to 2032 or 33. Then demolish, expand East Brisbane School, build green space and the rest are high rises. Everyone wins.
  • doesn't displace tenants.
  • still can be used for the Olympics. Eg Cricket.
  • or used for domestic teams during the Olympics.

Suncorp can still get a bunch of money thrown at it for the Olympics. By then it will be 30 years old, since its redevelopment.

Over a billion for QSAC upgrade. To be used when? What transport? Just dumb.

LA is all private funds.

It helps they are only building 2 temporary venues. LAOCOG basically dont have a capital expenditure budget, just an events budget.

The organising committee is a private company and they have to raise all the funds.

LA County and the California state goverment have signed guarantees. Think they are $250m USD..I dont think its each, but the state is a back up gurantee to LA County.

Slightly off topic, but next time Oz bid for the Games, the Fox sisters have to be part of the team that lobbies IOC members.

Might not get the Games again until 2072 at the earliest, maybe 2100, but we will bid again before that.

2056 Melbourne bid. Olympic stand/Docklands stadium will probably need replacing by then.

Melbourne wont make a bid for the winter Olympics in July unless climate change has really warmed things up.

No Oz city / state government is bidding for a late July - early August Olympics other than Brisbane or a city north of Brisbane.
