Summer #Brisbane2032 - Brisbane announced as host of the 2032 Olympics!

Seriously how many croc attacks have been reported in Rocky??

Cairns, Far North Queensland ie Gulf of Carpentaria, the odd one in Townsville, plenty in NT and the odd one in the Kimberleys is all I've ever heard,

The MCG lost seats for the Comm games as the running track required an area larger than the ground.
I doubt they will lay the concrete then dig it up like the MCG. They might lay some new concrete and put in new seats after the Games.

Ok looked up an old spreadsheet I made years ago calculating how long an athletics track needs to be from World Athletics technical rulebook, re the official dimensions of the straight lengths, the radius of the circle at either ends after the straight section of track, the 1.22m width of each lane and the 5cm lane markings.

From the outside edge of lane 9 at the most northern point of the northern end to the outside edge at the most southern point of the southern end the length of a track is 180.35m ( a 10 lane track would be 182.89m), add say 5m at either end before you hit the fence and seats, and you are looking at a stadium that is 190m long to host Olympic athletics.

The minimum width of a 9 lane track is 95.96m (10 lanes would be 98.50m). If you build something like Hayward Field in Eugene, you have the jumping events inside the track's "grass" areas. But they will do like most multi purpose stadiums do, and have the jumping events to the left and right of the track straights.

Adelaide Oval goal line to goal line is 167m and from fence to fence is 183m allowing 8m between goal line and fence, but because of the skinny width, is 124m from boundary to boundary and 134m from fence to fence east to west across middle of the ground.

Subiaco oval was, fence to fence 191m x 132m, and boundary to boundary was 175m x 120m.

Perth Stadium boundary to boundary is 165m x 130m

The 2 AFL grounds in Queensland dimension's were built to replicate the MCG. 12 years ago the MCG dimension for footy boundary to boundary was 161m x 140m and fence to fence was 173.6m x 148.4m according to the MCG website. Its now listed in the 2025 AFL Record Season Guide as 162m x 139m

The 2 Qld ground dimensions boundary to boundary according to 2025 AFL Record Season Guide are; Gabba 156m x 137m and Carrara 155m x 130m. Carrara was repurposed with a running track for the 2018 Comm Games. I think it was only 8 lanes.

Adelaide Oval and Carrara run north to south for both cricket and footy. The MCG, Gabba and Perth Stadium (and Subi) run north south for cricket and east west for footy.

Will be interesting to see which way Victoria Park runs for footy and cricket and if they keep it skinny like Adelaide Oval or wider like Perth Stadium and MCG.

Athletics will push for a north to south running track and the renders I have seen of a potential Victoria Park stadium have been a north to south stadium, which means it will be a skinny stadium.

If they go for a wider stadium, they might add 8m-10m of seats at each end, after the Olympics.

Quick calculation of how many seats might be added if 10m at each end is filled in with concrete and seats, based on Adelaide Oval type bays. Yes Adelaide is a skinny oval and the wide oval would get 10m added at both ends, but given AO set up is what stadium set up, I know the best, this is my best guestimate calculation.

10m = 10 rows given about 890mm seems to be the rule of thumb for distance between rows stadium builders try to achieve.
6 bays are behind the goals and just wide of the goals that would fill those 10m.
30 seats per bay
Do this at 2 ends and the calculation is:

10 x 6 x 30 x 2 = 3,600new seats.

Athletics will push for a north to south running track

Australian Athletics will hardly care.

Unlike Swimming or Tennis which get new/upgraded facilities and cricket/AFL who must be laughing their heads off about what they will get for zero cost, Athletics will get no legacy from these Games.

Athletes will get to run in a brand new stadium for a few weeks before it gets gifted to the Lions.

And even the warm-up track will be gifted to cricket.

Australian Athletics are pissed off generally, and that even the warm up track wont stay as a legacy issue. Might need Gout and co to go and lobby the government track. Its a recommendation, its not set in stone yet. Their response ends with;

................

Australian Athletics is seeking an urgent meeting with the Queensland Premier and Minister for Sport to better understand the detail behind today’s announcement and to identify a path forward that delivers on the Government’s stated commitment to a Games legacy that is inclusive, accessible and long lasting beyond 2032.

We remain committed to working with all levels of government and the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee to ensure our sport thrives before, during and well beyond the Games.

I posted on Twitter earlier today with a suggestion as to how athletics could still get somewhat of a legacy.

The Games needs warm-up/test events beforehand. Not to test venues (they probably won't be finished until 2032, but to prepare/test officials, media, IT/comms and even transport.

One way this could be done is to have a series of events at other Qld facilities, including some upgrades/renovations to provide a legacy. This wouldn't necessarily be funded by Brisbane-32, but by other State/Federal funds.

2030 Oceania Championships (Sunshine Coast)
2031 World Relays Championships (QSAC)
2031 World University Games (Multi-sport/athletics at QSAC)
2032 Australian Olympic Trials (Victoria Park)

Upgrading QSAC (and to a much lesser degree the Sunshine Coast Uni track) would give athletics some benefit from the Games.

Doing the maths I may attend an Olympics for my first time

Retirement / super the year before gives me some spending money and Ive decided its time

Cairns and the Gold Coast ( 2 casinos :D ) check out Rockhampton on the drive down and have a gander at some Main Oval action

I'm assuming you know the distances involved? :D I lived in Brisbane most of my life and have never driven further north than Mackay (10 hours). From Mackay to Cairns is another 8.5. And that stretch between Mackay and Rocky is a real mother****er. About 200km of **** all, and I do mean **** all.

If all the other Major cities have a world class athletics set-up for international meets, maybe it's cool not spending money to add one more...

Yeah did the bus trip to Rocky a long time ago - thank F it was at night

I dont mind driving - I hate the idea of flying so I really have to like driving :D

I’m spewing that they are proposing the archery in Bundaberg. That’s something I’d love to attend but I’m sure as hell not spending my time in Bundy, while everything else is happening further south.
Just watch on TV, you will see far more.
I went to the Archery when it was held at Lords for the London Olympics in 2012.

It is a much better TV spectator sport! Same as rowing.

Close. Maryborough.

Bit like saying Brisbane don't need a world class footy stadium as they have them in the rest of Oz.

More like saying Brisbane don't need a 100k capacity football ground because 1 already exists.

Aren't they building a massive swimming centre instead? That makes way more logical sense as QLD is the home of Swimming Australia.
