Broughton -- the new Shane Parker

Iy you don't rate Parker you weren't watching him in the days when we were real bad, always a solid contributor...........

As for Sandi winning a brownlow, I' ve had a carton on that one now since about 03/04 with a WC supporter. He reckons he will never win one cause he will do his knee due to his size, so we've got a carton on that one as well.......................

load of garbage that parkers skills were horrible... he wasnt a great kick in player, and he may have looked awkward and ungainly, but his skills did the job. he was quick, disciplined, determined and an allround fantastic defender...... i can not believe some of our supporters

Parker was (and still is apparently) one of the most unappreciated and underrated players ever to pull on a Dockers jumper.

Hard to think of a better defender to have played for the club. Spent most of his career taking the oppositions most dangerous forward, whether that be Phil Matera or big fellas like Richo. He also did it at a time when the backline was exposed to wave after wave of opposition attacks when our team was getting smashed. He continually stood up the challenge.

Was one of the first picked for a number of seasons and I still struggle to think of many defenders who have played for this club that I'd rather have back there than him. Try and name a Fremantle best 22 since inception and find 6 defenders at their prime you'd rather have back there ahead of Parker.

I think some of you must have him confused with Dan Parker. It's the only logic I can come up with for the disrespect being directed towards him on here.

Um. No.

Clement had one of the best boots ins the game. Was better overhead and a fine reader of the play.

Clements decison making was also top notch.

Think, he was in a backline for 90% of his career that had little to no midfield power in front, glass was made to look week in that situation all year last year, rutten as well (when adelaide lost a couple on the trot), yet Parker kept going under super pressure and complete dominance from opposing midfields. In fact lets look at the great defenders (recognised) and then the midfields they played with, most had/have dominat midfields. The pies have 18 games at home, and had bucks and burns plus others in front, consider this before subjecting us to your ramblings.

"Correct. He was from the age of battlers".

100% on the money (in my opinion). Some appear deluded on how good/ he was. Wouldn't have got close to many top 4 sides. I live in Victoria and watch a fair bit of VFL, he wasn't much above top tier VFL.

Parker was an absolute spud. Most panic stricken klutz I have ever seen.
Broughton had better be a lot better than Parker.

Poor guy...

Umm...Parker was good in a lot of areas but cool and composed under pressure he was not. He was terrible under pressure!

It's a called a difference of opinion, some of us like to look at things without the rose coloured glasses.

He was an average player in a shit team. I can recognise that, so can a few others.

Good grief..
I sat right behind the goals at the Subi end and I have to say Parker wasnt average.

Cos you can tolerate average.

He fumbled.. procrastinated and mucked up many a simple situation.

He played on both small and tall, rarely with success on either.

His kick ins were woeful and I remember the media asking him about this after one particularly bad game where it may have cost us the match. He SMILED and commented he probably wouldnt be doing that much longer! Argh

He was easily pushed off the ball and yet people see him as a hero.

I dont think he would have got 20 games at most other clubs and reckon he cost us that many games!

im glad some people on bigfooty have no input into what happens at fremantle:rolleyes:

i cant believe there are freo supporters on here bagging shane parker,as a matter of fact my opinion of big footy and its subscribers has just been dashed because of what people are saying here.
shane parker was one of the most underrated dour backmen of the last 20 years.
some of the comments here have left me dumbfounded,
what is this?kiddies hour on big footy?

Why?

Things panned out pretty well so far eh?

Look it's a matter of opinion, I thought he was a liability, others saw something I and others didnt.

No one is disputing his ability to negate a player, but part of the reason why this club has been stuck down the wrong end of the table for such a long time is because of poor decison makers, on and off the field, and poor disposers of the ball.

He was offensively in-effective.

I'd be very surprised if Broughton will last long term or even medium ... he'd either have to improve a lot or our recruiters stop recruiting medium HBF for the next 5+years (not going to happen given their importance). He has a lot of heart/guts/courage, but is as vanilla as they come, very slow (big problem when you're a medium defender playing on small quick forwards) and isn't a damaging nor consistently good ball user in offense ... fine in previous eras or when settling for a mediocre defence but not for today's game if you want to compete with the best.

can anyone remember parks in what was i think his 200th against carlton where parker played fullback on fevola and kicked more goals than what fevola did? he kept fev goalless and then in the final quarter ran off fev, leaving him in his wake collected the handpass off a teammate and then kicked truly from 45........ one of my favourite freo memories...... i can understand people having an opinion, that is what this site is all about.... im just baffled by some of those opinions..... id be interested to hear what IP has to think on this, given that she seems to be the most sensible of us all..... im cetainly not :D
