Buckley gets through training!

I agree

I was speaking to a mate who follows Essendon the other day about Buckley coming back through Williamstown. He couldn't believe that we would risk him at that level. I agree... the man is an icon at Collingwood and deserves to come straight back in. He is physically fit and has such talent that he would fit nicely into our forward line. How good would it be to see him out ther tomorrow night??

They didn't say why he didn't train... However if he simply didn't show up I would assume it would be a bigger story that it was. I'm with you in hoping he was just rested from training.

Its going to make for an interesting team selection this afternoon.

Does anyone know what time they announce the Williamstown team?

No I didn't mean that, I meant did he fail to train i.e. didn't finish the training session or didn't show up at training at all. Nothing like what you suggest.

The story...NATHAN Buckley came through his crucial fitness test with flying colours today ... but won't play this weekend.
He will almost certainly be ready to make his return next weekend, either for Williamstown in ther VFL or for Collingwood against Melbourne at the MCG on Friday night.

"Whether's he's right to go now, he in his own mind might think he is ... we're certainly going to err on the side of caution and give him another week,'' Collingwood assistant coach Guy McKenna said.

"It's not going to hurt, we just want to be safe that when he comes back next time.

"He's got every chance of getting through and performing at the level he's expected too at Williamstown for the senior side.''

McKenna said whether Buckley returns through the VFL or straight through the AFL side would be decided next week.

He said the conditioning coaches were not convincedhe had done enough to become match fit and need another four training sessions to properly prepare his body.

Meanwhile, McKenna said forward Alan Didak was in some doubt for tomorrow night's match against Richmond after failing to train today because of general soreness.

Buckley took part in a series of kicking and running exercises today, including short sprints, as he put his injured hamstrings to the test in the hope of playing for the first time this season.

And he was so keen to prove his fitness he leapt the boundary fence at Gosch's Paddock about a hour into the session as if to dispel rumours he could be nursing himself through.

Every major media outlet and scores of fans kept their eyes glued to Buckley's hammies through much of the 90-minute session and there was no doubting his enthusiasm.

In chilly, blustery conditions the injury-plagued player ran onto the oval as many of his teammates strolled and jogged.

He appeared to be holding nothing back as he led out strongly to marking opportunities and a series of sprint exercises.

In the past four seasons Buckley has missed 38 games because of hamstring problems.
He had radical surgery two years ago to sew together a tear in the tendon and this season he has suffered no fewer than six new tears just when it seemed he might be ready to play again.

Today was effectively the last throw of the dice.
"If he gets through we'll declare him fit to play," the Magpies' conditioning coach David Buttifant said earlier this week.

Buckley has had surgery, different fitness regimens, exercise routines, physio courses, massage, ice baths.

Seven games missed in 2004, then 11 the next year prompted an operation, a radical procedure to hopefully solve the problem.
In 2006 he played 20 games and it looked like the surgery had done the trick but this season not a single game as his body keeps protesting, telling him it can't cope.

Three weeks ago Buckley suffered a slight tear at the end of a session that, had he got through, would have seen him picked to play.
It was then and there he decided rather than surrender, he would go for broke in a last-ditch stand.

"I think I'm just going to go for broke now and train as hard as I can," he said at the time.

"There's no doubt the position I'm in, (age) is a major reason for the recurring injuries. I might be spent. I know the body's packing up, but I've got an opportunity and I'll keep striving towards that.
"In many ways, I've been mollycoddled a little. We've tried to not do too much, modify training. Right through my career I've gone on the premise that more is better and I've had to adjust that over the last two or three years.

"It's not looking great. But the program we'll have in place for the rest of the year will be very different than the ones we've run with to this point. I've got no right to be confident at all, but there's hope."

Buttifant confirmed this week Buckley's training schedule had been altered significantly, focusing more on endurance work to see if his body can cope.
Two sessions this week and so far so good. One to go.
It is believed a degenerative back problem has repeatedly caused his hamstrings to tear. There are multiple scar tissues on both legs and each time one has gone, it's has been in a new area.
Earlier this year leading sports doctor Peter Brukner aired the professional view that on the evidence, Bucks was done.

"I don't think he is going to make it," was Brukner's clinical view.
"He has the best people looking after him and the best advice, but sometimes you have to accept the fact your body can't do it any more.
"I love Bucks and he deserves to get back, but sometimes, no matter what you do, your body can't do it and he's at that point."

Buckley turned 35 late last month and almost certainly won't attempt a 14th pre-season.
It's now or never for the great man, the most dedicated of footballers.

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,22213052-11088,00.htmlSO far, so good ... that was the news from Collingwood training today as Nathan Buckley went through one of the most important training sessions of his career.
The Magpies skipper took part in a series of kicking and running exercises, including short sprints, as he put his injured hamstrings to the test in the hope of playing this season.

Watched by about 100 fans and dozens of media, Buckley appeared to be in no discomfort and may be ready to make his return for Williamstown against Bendigo Bombers at Windy Hill on Saturday....

The Legend has returned to conquer.
