Even though Whites forms dropped off a bit since the second half has picked up, how has he and Clarke had such different careers? I know he took the allrounder route for a while, but between 00 - 04 Clarke wasn't that far a head of him.

Then boom goes the dynamite..

I think captaincy almost ruined his career. If he wasn't captain (if say, Jewell was captain) it would have advanced his career signifiantly

Most likely, skilled at batting and captaining. Just couldn't do both at the same time.
I think even if it was 4 years where he wasn't captain he'd be much better. Wait until he was 24/25 and then give it to him for a couple of years where he makes the transition into the Australian side.

Also; he stayed at Victoria. Dreadful career choice

Footscray Edgewater opener Dean Russ is poised to become the 840th player to represent the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers in first-class cricket after he was selected in the 12-man squad to face Tasmania in a Bupa Sheffield Shield match at the MCG starting Monday (3/3).

Russ, who turned 28 on Thursday, has struck 641 runs, at an average of 45.8, in Bartercard Premier Cricket this season while also impressing in the Toyota Futures League, where he is the tournament's leading run-scorer with 350 runs.

Russ is joined in the squad by Peter Handscomb, who amassed 212 in his previous match for St Kilda on February 15.

They replace Cameron White and Glenn Maxwell in the side who are both in South Africa with the Australian Twenty20 side.

The match will see a return of day/night Sheffield Shield cricket after it was first trialled in the late 1990s.

A pink ball will be used for the first time in Australian first-class cricket with play beginning at 2.00pm and scheduled to finish at 9.00pm.

Victoria will take on Tasmania at the MCG on Monday from 2.00pm.

good on Dean Russ all of the very best im sure you are talented and a good batsman.
but for FFS this is the problem with cricket victoria. how about bring in some young players, Muirhead, Keith or who ever else that is under at leaser 25. the bushrangers are no chance of making the finals, so at least play the kids for the remainder of the season, instead of giving a bloke in his late 20s his debut. & play a tried spud Fawad Ahmed.
i really hope muirhead & the rest of the young kids leave for NSW where they will be given opportunities to develop & consistent game time make the most of their potential instead of this pathetic treatment they receive down at CV

I agree on bringing in younger players but in Keith's case he just doesn't make enough runs in a weak premier cricket comp to consider,a double failure last weekend followed by a duck today.hes that far off lately its not funny although he's actually doing better with the ball than bat.

At least in the russ selection they have rewarded good futures league form.there just isn't any young blokes banging down the door with big runs week in week out.

In simple terms - they are nowhere near ready yet - have a look at the recently concluded U/19 world cup - there is no one remotely close to stepping up, we see all these "elitely talented" kids go into Premier cricket and most struggle to adjust for a while against more seasoned cricketers. I congratulate Dean Russ on earning his cap, we have to expose more youngsters to senior cricket as early as they can, keeping them in mickey mouse junior comps only stunts their development and you will have more 28 year olds debuting in the future.

As long as Handscomb doesn't open, I'm happy. You have 4 other openers in that side. Stoinis seems to be the one who'll bat at 3, then I'd guess Handscomb 4, Hill 5, Dussey 6.

Any chance of Ian Holland getting a game in the final round? Been doing very well for Ringwood, hasn't been too bad for the Futures League side either, might be worth a game ahead of Boland to have a look at him
how old is he? if is not older than 27, 28, or a washed up hack from another state, he wont be of any interest to the Victorian selectors;)
in me saying that Stoinis is going along ok, against tassie:)

Stoinis is from WA ;)

Can confirm Aaron Finch to South Australia next season. Most likely to take over the captaincy as well.
Would be a bold move to install Finch as captain given his first class form currently wouldn't warrant selection as a batsman, yet by appointing him as captain he would have to be selected regardless of his form.
