Butcher or Watts?

Butcher, even though you will most likely have both.

Butcher takes awesome strong marks and kicks a lot of goals. What i saw of watts last year is that he leads and is like roo as someone else said. i see watts as a 60 goal a year and butch at 80.

Both fantastic, maybe better than buddy and roughie.;)

I think were forgetting how good Buddy is.

IF The Eagles and Melbourne both had PP's, eagles with picks 2 and 4, Melbourne with 1 and 3, who do you think melbourne would take at 1?
Would they look for a forward partnership dynasty of Watts and Butcher and show faith in blease, Maclean, Jones, Strauss, Grimes etc, or will they jump on Scully?
Or will they go for Scully, sureing up their midfield, only to probably lose Butcher to the KP forward, particularly contested marking hungry eagles?
Interesting to see how it pans out. If the eagles nabbed Butcher and Lucas we would be set.

We'd take Scully no doubt... With Watts already in our forward line, Jurrah looking a very likely type, we'd have to go for the gun mid... We've seen teams win Grand Finals with average forward lines, however we haven't seen teams win Grand Finals with average midfields. With Watts, Jurrah supported by Bate, Dunn, Martin, Newton even perhaps, we will be able to put a forward line together good enough, as long as they're getting the delivery from the middle.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if we skipped Butcher and went for the two best Mids, Scully and whoever is next in line...

Scully is much more important than Butcher to us. Our midfield is slow as hell and lacks class and skills.

Hmm. Depends on your clubs intentions. IF they wanted another KP forward to compliment the riewoldt like Watts, they may take the view that the difference between Butcher and the next best KPF is greater than he difference between Scully and say, Lucas. A midfielder like Lucas or Morabito probably brings more footskills and pace than scully, who seems like more of an inside mid.
In terms of need, Butcher and Lucas/Morabito probably offers more to both clubs over scully and a comparitively substandard KP forward.

If that scenario materialised, i think we would take Scully with pick one regardless of all other scenarios.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but West Coast seem to have an aversion to drafting KPP with high draft picks. Naitanui, well he's a ruck, is probably the exception.

It would make things interesting if you got a priority pick (can't see it happening though...), because if Butcher is the standout KPP people have been talking about, then you could trump us by picking him up at 2 and then still getting a midfielder with pick 4.

If you guys don't have a priority pick, I think you'll go for the best midfielder, thats if previous history is anything to go by...

You are wrong. We have had 4 top 5 picks in the past 10 years. We took:

2000 pick 5 - McDougal - KPF
2001 pick 3 - Judd - mid
2007 pick 3 - Masten - mid
2008 pick 2 - Naitanui - KPF/ruck

We just don't have many top picks.

Simple. You take the best availible player.

Pick 1. Melbourne Football Club. "Tom Scully common down..."
The rest will take care of it's self, at least this year we'll have a sponser!

Christ, McDougall?? He doesn't count... :D

I'm guessing that you'd probably go for one of your WA midfielder's over John Butcher if you had a pick in the top 3 or 4...

Yea not sure early on the year would have said Butcher definately.

Now I think we will go for two mids, as our sides midfield is very poor these days.

Agreed.

There are lengths between Scully and the next best so he will go number 1.

Although the Dees would prefer another tall forward with pick 2, Butcher has been too quiet during the champs - if Trengove from SA has another big game, they will probably take him as the second best player.

Ours is poorer :D...

We might end up stealing one of the WA boys, Lucas or Morabito...:p

Our midfield is slower than yours thats where we are getting hurt at the moment.

Yea you might go for one of the WA boys, but I stlll think your more likely to go Butcher, he will impress at draft camp.

As for us where more likely to go local talent though, thats not a lock.

And Harvey has come out and said we will be going for KPPs so that would be even more certain now IMO. We wouldn't be there potentially getting in the way of Lucas or Morabito.

If we get picks 2 & 4 and you guys get pick 5 and a pp.

Picks 21 and 22

I would look a trading maybe pick 2 to you guys if you where going to use it on Butcher.

So you would get pick 2 we get pick 5 and pick 21.

What do you think Chops?

What would be the value of the difference between Butcher and Panos/ Duncan? Not hight enough I would have thought.

If you do end up with a PP, we may still have pick 4 before your 5.

Bugger off Butcher IMO, I'd rather the Scully/Trengrove combo.

Even Jesus Christ himself couldn't do much in our forward line with the absolute crap we send in there every week, what chance would Butcher have?

Scully at 1 and Trengrove at 2 (providing we get the priority pick and it's 1 and 2)

Then take a KPP with our next pick.

The prospect of having Grimes, Scully & Trengove in the engine room is definitely a tantalising prospect:thumbsu:

If Trengove is a better prospect than Butcher then we should pick him. He and Scully are exactly the type of midfielders we need.

This is a more pressing issue than the Power Forward one IMO..
