Cale Morton

I think there is still time for Cale Morton - he has a similar list of attributes to Brendan Goddard, Shannon Hurn and Bryce Gibbs, and probably has a similar role to slot into at AFL level, that of the tall long kicking (But not necessarily very fast) back flanker. Just so long as no one is expecting a full time midfielder...

He has probably shown more then Masten at the moment and Melbourne would probably do better to hold onto him for a bit longer then to get paid less than they might deserve for him by trying to trade.

Well in todays game he was shocking. Recall in the 3rd or 4th he had the opportunity to nudge the Pies Brown off his line in a marking contest but baulked and let him knee the back pocket high in his back and take an uncontested mark and goaled.

The small guy just turned around in disbelief looking for who should have made at least some effort.

That effort was absolutely disgusting. However his overall game today was ok with 22 disposals and 7 marks- hardly 'shocking'.

There were more examples that I recall...one on the flank when he let a Collingwood player push back with the flight to mark a Frawley kick and didn't even pretend to provide physical pressure. I'd say he had a shocker.

We must keep Morton, sure he is playing poor atm but so is the whole team. Cale wasn't picked up for his hardness but for his skills and footy smarts. When your own captain doesn't go in hard how are the young guys going to learn?

We have to keep him, we can't lose both Scully and Morton in the same year, it will set us back another 2 years if not more. If we can get an already made player or someone who's been around a few years then I'd look at it but not for a 2nd or 3rd rounder (Trengove from Port? :) ). The 2nd or 3rd rounder will probably end up playing 3 years anyway, I'd rather work with Morts.

2 X Jack Trengove's in the same team?

Melbourne just need to bite the bullet and put it on him about being hard over the ball, tackling and one per-centers. from the outside it doesnt look like bailey places a big deal on hardness and defensive pressure, make him train with moloney all year and match them up in intra clubs. If he does not respond then trade him out

Well you would be classing his entire game based on two moments then- your call but not something I'd do. His two squibs were absolutely disgusting, but in it's entirety his game wasn't 'shocking' by most people's standards.

A couple of weeks ago (maybe even a month ago) at training Dean Bailey called Morton on not putting his head over the ball, and proceeded to run a drill whereby Morton was the sole participant, and had the entire team run at him a couple of times to make him try and lay as many tackles and wear as many bumps as possible.

After this his first effort for the seniors was in the opening minute against Carlton- Cale attacked the ball hard, put his head over it, and got a free kick incorrectly called against him for head high contact even though he got the ball first. Seems he has reverted to his old squibby habits straight after...

In any case there's only so much a coach can do for someone- especially if the coach is the relatively uninspiring Dean Bailey...

This may be a fair call on bailey and there may be circumstaences for mortons form and willingness for the hard ball. if morton is not willing to do wat is required however, or Bailey is not getting the support of his players both may need to be seriously looked at. The players all seem to back him in the media but only do it on the field from time to time. There were a number of carlton players like this and they have turned it around under ratten so both coach and player may turn it around next year if given the chance.

I would like him at the crows don't think we would have anything to give up of value unfortunately except draft picks. We wouldn't give up our first rounder & our second rounder wouldn't be enough.

But I think we would need a different coach for us to

a) consider it

b) make it worthwhile

Why? In God's name - why?

You're building a powerful case for Neil Craig's retention.
b) make it worthwhile
No coach could make it worthwhile.

To tall awkward and soft to be a mid. Not enough weight to be a KPP. Kicking Is way overrated. Doesn't get his own ball, doesn't tackle. Anything else?? Oh and he seems to think he's a lot better than he actually Is.

Other than that he's great!

I seem to recall St Kilda supporters saying similar things about Goddard in his first few years. Granted, Goddard was ahead of this kid, but he took an awful lot of stick in his first 3 years and didn't really start to click until 08.

I reckon Morton could be a Goddard-like player if he just put his mind to it and stayed out of the medical room. If he turned out to be 3/4 the player that Goddard is then he'd justify the no 4 pick.

Not sure it was limited to ust two acts. Any game when you pull out of contests like he did is a shocker...and I'm not just lining up an opposition player here, I was equally dismayed when Yarran and Garlett dropped the head in a contest recently. It sets the tone for the match, and brings team mates down.

His 22 disposals mean very little in what was a wasteful high posession match. 1 tackle in a high tackling game doesn't exactly weigh in his favour either.

Why? In God's name - why?

I remember watching him play a fair bit during his first year and I thought he was showing a fair bit. I think a good club could make a nice player out of the little accumulator that he is.

The reason I said new coach is because if he came to Adelaide under Craig I could see him going the way of Tambling.

No coach could make it worthwhile.

Morton could quite easily be a better player than Symes, Henderson & Reilly have been for us this year. Agreed it probably isn't worth trading for as we would be paying too much given his original draft position. But I still think he will make a fine AFL standard player (even if he won't end up elite or A grade).

Dermie gave him a massive serve for letting some opposition player have a free run at MacDonald's back.

That was a horror to watch Slattery. I walked out of the room as a 'neutral' supporter. He literaly stopped and let his man have a free run at a mark on his team mates head.

Hmm fair enough- and yeah I know you aren't just potting a player for the sake of it- I can guarentee you I am and was filthier than most about it! He did it right in front of me! ;)

In any case the HUN and the Age both listed Morton in their bests- admittedly a tough gig picking our 'bests' Monday but nonetheless...
