Callan Ward - Part 2 - Officially gone to GWS

I am glad someone bumped this thread as i was furious watching Ward play last night !

i know we will get over it, but it absolutely stinks what has happened to us with the suns and the giants coming into the league. Especially the Compo we got for Ward. He will be twice the player that Scully will ever be, so yet again, we get shafted by the system !

It shit me to absolute tears watching ward play last night actually and how good he will be.

Same pattern from years ago - We always seem to lose great players - Quinlan, Round just to name a few of the many, many players we have lost over the years due to lack of finances etc.....

We have been totally screwed in the compensation process.

As if last year wasn't bad enough getting the same compensation for Harbrow that Hawthorn got for Brown, this year they really give it to us up the arse by giving us same compensation as Davis and less than Scully.

Pretty painful watching Ward last night. More-so than Harbrow last year.

He will be a gun.

Harbrow was a spud last year, would of greatly added to our turnover woes if he was here, Harbrow of 2009 was very good and he has been declining ever since. Not too unhappy about losing him. In many games opposition coaches pretty much let him run free knowing he will either turn it over or do a backward/sideways kick after a fruitless exciting dash.

Ward on the other hand.

On the AFL website, the review of the Giants v Swans game did not list Ward amongst the best for GWS. He got their first goal, laid some tackles, but otherwise was just OK to reasonably fair.
He obviously has a lot of potential, but not all players get there. Because he has abandoned the Bulldogs, I hope he doesn't get much better, but knowing our luck, he probably will.

If he had of played that game for us we would be talking him up. Set the tone for them early and shown what a terrific leader he will be.

I don't really rate Ward as highly as some. Yes he will be a decent player but will never be a standout type and will only ever just be a part of the midfield rotations. We recruited a similar type in Smith and will have a extra 1st round pick in the strongest draft in decades. People need to get over it and stop moaning.

We have to stop this poor us mentality. Its going to be a exciting year with a new coach and different game plan. Lets look forward not back.

He won't be 'elite' in the sense of a flashy ben cousin's type midfielder, but he will be elite in the sense of a hard nosed, ball winning, leader that every Club would want in their squad and on the ground as much as possible because he will get it done in clutch situations and will others along with him.

That being said... Boo! And I hope someone takes him out, extremely hard and painfully, each time we play them.

It will be interesting to see who we take in the next draft with the Ward compensation pick.

If we get a star, and Smith kicks on (if, if, if - I know) we may think it wasn't such a bad thing that Ward left.

Just trying to think of positives is all...

It will be pretty funny if we get a real gun.

We will have effectively gotten rid of Jordan McMahon for a gun kid :thumbsu::p

smith isnt directly connected to Ward leaving, unless you mean we got a hard nut that we wouldnt have if Ward had stayed - then we would have picked Crozier.

I like playing what if -

Ward + Crozier vs. Smith + 2012 draft pick

we would have gotten a gun and a few years of decent service from Ward that seems to be forgotten, after all Ward put on some decent final performances (Destroying Selwood).

I love it how Richmond supporters say they are happy again now that Ward has left but they forget to take into account who we get with our compo + the service Ward has already given.

Anyone questioning his cred should be drawn and quartered. He put up a massive effort for them on Saturday night, and will continue to do so.
He is going to become an absolute champion in the same mode as Anthony Stevens and Glenn Archer were at NM. His courage and onfield leadership are first-class.
He does need to work on his media speaking, he has a slight stammer, but as soon as he becomes comfortable with that he will be the perfect package for GWS as a long-term captain.
The thing that irks me is that he is clearly the best player of the recruits, yet we got little compensation compared to Scully and Davis. That really annoys me.
Good luck to him up there, I am disappointed he is gone but will remember with fondness some of his efforts with us.
