Callan Ward - Part 2 - Officially gone to GWS

Callan Ward would be GWS's best player by far imo still cant beleive how little publicity he gets compared to the rest of them. They done a whole radio talk on SEN about the GWS Sydney game and they didtn evenmention him! He kicked their first goal and was the best on field for them! Scully, hasnt done jack for melbourne or for GWS still dont get the hype :s

Anyone questioning his cred should be drawn and quartered. He put up a massive effort for them on Saturday night, and will continue to do so.
He is going to become an absolute champion in the same mode as Anthony Stevens and Glenn Archer were at NM. His courage and onfield leadership are first-class.
He does need to work on his media speaking, he has a slight stammer, but as soon as he becomes comfortable with that he will be the perfect package for GWS as a long-term captain.
The thing that irks me is that he is clearly the best player of the recruits, yet we got little compensation compared to Scully and Davis. That really annoys me.
Good luck to him up there, I am disappointed he is gone but will remember with fondness some of his efforts with us.

what a great post:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Still annoyed about it.

I don't hate him, I've met him and he's a really good kid and his family are absolutely tremendous, it just pisses me off watching him run around for a plastic mob like them. Especially for a bloke like Sheedy - he really gets on my nerves, just spins so much shit, reminds me of that Lyle Lanley guy in The Simpsons.

If I were to meet Ward in the street, I wouldn't abuse him or anything, I'd still shake his hand, but give a very disappointed shake of the head.

And also, I'm still extremely disappointed in the club and the playing group for allowing him to play in the last game against Freo.

Like you say in time his work with the media will get better, I actually think if he was more at ease with the media Ward and Power would of been the giants only captains this year.

Good on Ward. I'm glad that the ex-Bulldogs player, who was brought up in our professional culture, is leading the way!

I agree it looks good on our behalf and the work we put into our players but does that mean that every year clubs will be poaching our players?? I would rather keep our gun players then give them away to other clubs, especially home grown players.

I dont blame him and hope he does well for GWS just burns every time I see him run out onto the pitch without the red, white and blue..

I blame him, and I hope he has no success whatsoever at GWS (although he obviously will)

Took the money and that's that

Can't believe how wrong the AFL got it that Scully can be worth an entire first round pick over ward, and the fact that nobody stood up to them just makes it even worse (we do have to watch what we say though for our equalization fund thinggo)

Great finals experience, high rankings in the bulldogs BnF, already one of the better players at his club, more match experience, great durability

>>>>>

Dodgy knees and potential

ANYDAY!!!

Absolute joke!

Out of interest, from your point of view (or the feeling on the GWS board), who is predicted to turn out better, Ward or Scully?

They screwed it up with the rigid compensation system. There is a big gap between two first rounders and one first rounder. There should have been a tier with one first rounder as well as a second rounder. That would have been more suitable for Scully, Ward and Davis. Then only the real guns (Ablett, Cloke this yr?) would be worth 2 first rounders.

Technically I think they could have done the above, as they had discretion to vary the compensation on a case by case basis, but doing it even once may have opened up a can of worms...

Great post. It makes me sick to come on here and still see doggies fans wishing him best.

The last week we've seen Hurley stay at Essendon, Deledio stay at Richmond, Pendles stay at Collingwood.

They would have all been offered even more money than Cal. But they stayed because of Loyalty and Prestige. No wonder our club has no prestige when it's own fans are happy for people to leave for money.
We don't even expect loyalty?? wtf???? It's a joke.

Bunch of mugs. And it's not just the club it sums up the stupid mentality of the western suburbs where we always let people shit on us. How can we ever expect to amount to anything?

I seriously hope the guy fails. And miserably too.

This is a bloke who is a very good player but he's no Cooney or Griffen. This was the opportunity of a lifetime for him, a one off. He's just the sort of bloke that a new club would want, young yet experienced, hard working, tough, an ideal role model for the young stars emerging. I doubt that GWS would have targetted Hurley, Delidio or Pendlebury with as much enthusiasm as they did Ward. His former team mates have no issue with it. It's no wonder he went. You are too harsh on generous hearted souls who wish him the best.

This is all true, but what really hurts is that Hurley, Delidio and Pendlebury all re-signed with there respective clubs. We however lose a player that was the future of our club, while these others, surprise surprise, lose nothing.
While we have got compensation picks and a good player to replace him, it still puts development and the climb back up the ladder for our club back several years.

One step forward, two steps back.

It’s the loss of development that rankles. Ward is 3 years ahead of Smith in terms of experience and fitness base but not necessarily in terms of talent. So we had to go to the draft last year to find a replacement for a player we’d put 3 years into when we could have addressed another need and been that bit further along the road. All bank rolled by the AFL in the interests of their expansion and market penetration.
The irony might be that Smith ends up being a better player and we might get a gun or two from this year’s draft. Our gratification is delayed, however, and we’re tired of waiting and seemingly getting shafted all the time. For an explanation of why this happens and why our hopes are subservient to the AFL’s expansion policy, see the AFL’s mission statement below:

AFL Mission statement
The AFL exists to:
1) Manage the national competition to ensure it is the most successful national elite sports competition for the benefit of our key stakeholders – our AFL clubs, players and the public.
2) Promote high levels of player participation in well-managed programs down to the grassroots level.
3) Promote public interest in the game by building the strongest consumer brand position in Australian sport.
4) Attract and develop the most talented athletes and sports administrators.
5) Foster good citizenship, both on and off the playing field

The AFL is building an empire and our dashed or delayed hopes for our particular club are acceptable collateral damage in pursuit of the above. We don’t have the funds of other clubs to sweeten deals that could see players such as Ward retained. Not yet anyway.

Really, the cure for our predicament is premierships and a strategy for getting them. From what I’ve observed of Macca, I think we’re in good hands.
Be patient and a bit lateral this year. I think we’ll get there in the next few years.

If we picked up a player that will turn out like Ward with our comp pick, i think we would all be pretty happy.

Obviously we will pick a different type of player but my point is, if we chose Ward next year with pick 7 lets say. I certainly wouldnt be complaining. Its a big risk that a player may turn out worse. Hence our future plans take a massive set back.

Exactly.

But what REALLY p'd me off was the fact that he was invited to & turns up at last years B&F after he's paraded around on telly with his new GWS guernsey etc etc. And he gets an award. I wouldn't mind the club shouting me a ticket next year. Judas could shout the lot of us on his wage. I mean it's fine that the players stay mates with him, but they can catch up with him at the pub. What's he doing being welcomed at an official club function after he's thrown the start we gave to his career back in our faces? I mean if the CEO of ANZ left to go to Westpac, do you think he would be invited to the ANZ Xmas party? I think not.

That's when you think that this club really can't be serious. That's why I've chucked in my reserve seat this year & only stuck to a season ticket in general admission. They mustn't need my dollars if they are happy to pay for Callan Ward to attend the B&F after he's left the club.

The people here going on about loyalty are the ones who want to trade Cooney Higgins and Cross who have shown nothing but loyalty. Josh Hill wanted to leave and did so where is the hundreds of posts thread about him leaving?

Well said Interloper. Best post I've read in a long time.
This is why BF pisses all over the HUN for insights into what's really happening in football.

Maybe our club is above that? And that they can see it was a once in a lifetime offer for him, so while wishing he was staying with us, can understand his decision. I would be pissed if our club didn't award him the award because he was leaving, totally undermines our integrity.

If this is seriously the reason you have not renewed, because a player of that year attended the Best and Fairest for that year, then that is pretty bad. Where is your loyalty to the club then, huh? #it'sa2waystreet

THIS!
What about our loyalty for Eade? Coach for twice as long as Ward was a player and we turfed him after one bad year.
We also got rid of West and Grant when they were willing to play on.

I thought loyalty was about what's best for the Club, not the individual.

Many of you on here are saying we should be loyal to individuals & what is best for them should take precedence over what is best for the club. The club has re-enforced that view by having someone who has already started promoting a new & competitive brand (ie GWS) return to receive congratulations & well wishing.

Hence what is best for me as an individual at the moment is to cut costs. This is the result of having the club confirm that it's ok to do what's best for me as an individual & not for the Club. Particularly when it comes to cash.

So don't question my 47 years of paid up loyalty to the club. I obviously misunderstood & now I'm just following the example set.

Club > individual, as it always should be.

No player is or ever should be above the club and decisions made should always be for the greater benefit of the club. If that player wants to put themselves ahead of the club, then we're better off without them.

As far as Grant or West playing on another year, you have to look at what was to be gained from playing on. I doubt there would be very few who weren't grateful of the service provided by these players however theres a time when hard decisions need to be made.

Of course the club takes precedence over the individual. So honestly it's not Ward's disloyalty that is annoying people, it's the quality of the player we lost. We have heaps of players over the years want to leave and the only two we talk about are Brown and Ward. Would people care as much if Higgins at the end of the year wanted to leave to one of 'the expansion clubs?
