Benefiting by being told "you're the man" and not the 4th prong, stop gap, luxury player while a combination of Dangerwood, Ablett and Kelly were dominating stoppages at various stages. Undoubtedly rising to the challenge this season and instructions are on winning/delivering the footy, rather than selfless "take one for the team" roles with the odd goal here or there as a bonus. Of note, when he was used in stoppages previously it was in a tagging/nullifying role too, whereas now he's able to actually be proactive - it's as clear as day. As a confidence player, this is what Cam has needed to finally reach his potential in my opinion. Let's hope he can continue it.

Completely true, but also a reason why I have a lot of respect for Mitch Duncan and Sam Menegola, who can be shunted out to a wing or a flank and still have influence over the game.

It *is* easy enough (comparatively) as an AFL footballer to get good numbers and influence a game when you're at the coalface for most of the game, it's a lot harder to win the footy when you're not regularly playing as part of the main on-ball troupe. However, as Selwood and Ablett have found out, you can't play everyone in the middle all the time.

Guthrie's had some good games off half-back, but never looks half as good (or dynamic) as he does when he's playing in the middle.

I been very critical of him lately.
He's been superb. Menegola is another one who is in career best form but Guthrie has always been a better user of the ball so having him playing at a very high level goes to show what a change they make to the team overall.

I pray he can play like this at seasons end. Just imagine going into a final and you have Menegola averaging 20+, Guthrie, 20+, Duncan 20+, Danger 20+, maybe Selwood can lift his output by then as well.

Makes you wonder what the issue has been the last 3 years.
Hasn't he battled a few injury issues over recent pre-seasons or late in the pre-season, but that doesn't seem to have been an issue this year

The other year didn't he hurt his calf in a pre-season game, and while he then had a delayed start to the season proper it seemed that he was rushed back into the team and not quite right

This year he also seems to have a more defined role within the team, and not being used to plug holes - he's not playing in defence for a couple of weeks, then being thrown into a tagging type role or thrown up forward where he struggled to have an impact

Continuity to ones role and being their best position is such a help

There is all that, of course.

But I think you'll find most of the improvement has stemmed from the 'good, hard look' Cameron took at himself after reading the almost endless derision he's copped from some on here about his footy, his haircut, and his work in the hospitality industry.

You know it makes sense...

It's just a tough choice when you've got so many players whose best position is inside midfielder - Guthrie, Menegola, Duncan, Danger, Selwood, Constable, Narkle, Fogarty, Atkins...

It's why players like Dalhaus and Miers are so important IMO, it's tough to find smalls who thrive away from the coalface.

I also don't think that he tends to get the balance right when he's in a defensive role. It's like he loses focus on the footy, at the expense of containing the player.

He's so much better when he's just see-ball-get-ball. He's also a legitimate goal threat when he plays in the middle.

Mission accomplished?

Yeah, I've seen Dangerfield making a few of the teams in the rolling AA team thread on the main board as well, but no mention of Guthrie anywhere. Pretty much proves that the people posting them don't watch enough footy to take their teams seriously.

Danger nowhere near AA level this year. Shows some players are pretty much automatic selections no matter what their form is like.

It does also highlight what a high standard of footy he's playing for many years now.
He's having one his worst seasons to date, and yet, he's still leading the team (midfielders) for many key stats such as disposals, contested footy, clearances, goals, goal assists, inside fifties and metres gained per disposal.
