Everone, like me, is suprised about Hitchcocks pre season. To be picked up in the rookie draft from pick 12 then to be in contention for Rd 1. What I find amazing about Alfie is that he went form last year in the SANFL Under 18's/Reserves straight into the 1st team (if he gets picked Rd 1 that is) without playing any SANFL matches, i can't think of any other player that has got straight into the team from SANFL reserves.
Didn't Boak do this, or nearly got to the stage where he would have, when Glenelg started him off in their reserves ream?

I thought that Boak played a few reserves games, then a few league, with some near BOGs before coming into the AFL team.

Matthew Bode was one. I dont recall him playing seniors at Glenelg before he made his debut in Round 1 1998. Sal went from the TAC Cup to play Round 1 2003. Only other player I know that went from SANFL reserves to AFL before making SANFL debut was Hayden Skipworth.

Boak started in the SANFL reserves in Round 2 & 3 where he was BOG both weeks. Then he played six SANFL matches before making his AFL debut.

Then where's all that stuff been for the last 7 years? I still have absolutely no ****ing idea why everyone just assumed Schulz is suddenly a gun player because he's in a Port jumper. From what he's shown so far in his career, he's a spud. Until he shows something in a real game which indicates that this has changed, that's how he should be treated. None of this 'Schulz will be too good for opposition defenders' crap, he hasn't been too good for opposition defenders for the last 7 years. If he starts being too good for opposition defenders, talk him up all you like. Until that happens, it's stupid to just assume he suddenly will be for no particular reason.

you're spot on gopower. I've watched this guys career and i am very happy he is not with us anymore. he has a pea heart and you will come to see that soon enough and his kicking is great until the game starts.

Much different to when you guys got rodan who always showed something and was coming back from a knee when we got rid of him. We could have got pick 1226 for schulz and I would have thought it was a win for us.

On a different note, this hitchcock fella, supercoach spot?

Yes, definitely. But I'd be careful about what you say about Port players on our board, I've got more freedom to bag them here than you would even if you're just agreeing with me.

no worries understood, i just don't like wrapping up players who have shown nothing to deserve it. West Coast supporters are doing the same with JON!

im a big advocate of "starting from scratch" when it comes to footy players changing clubs

Schulz will get the same from me... Many players turn their careers around with a change of club... and lets be honest... Richmond arent exactly what you'd call a decent club to play footy for

I read a few weeks ago that JON had difficulty understanding the gameplan because he couldn't read or write. Richmond did nothing about this in the 4 or so years he was on the list. He is finally getting help at WC.

I wouldn't judge a player on what they did at Richmond, there's a reason they've been on the bottom for so long, terrible coach and development of players. Nobody expects Shulz to be a star, just serviceable.

So am I. That's what Schulz is to me, a mature age draftee. I have no problem with people giving him a chance, but I think it's stupid to just assume that he's suddenly an AFL-quality player based on a 4 goal pre-season and state this as if it's a fact.

Exactly. And whilst I understand the need for positive news coming out of the club as it tries to rebuild its supporter base, I would have thought they would have learned their lessons from previous 'pre-season' stars. Last couple being talked up were Damon and Wade....and we can see what they have achieved since.

Lets just take a deep breath and wait for these 'new' recruits to start performing in the real stuff for us like D-Rod and Mahoney did before we go overboard.

It's too early to tell what he will offer under real game conditions but be realistic Gopower, Schulz was traded as a straight swap + pick upgrade for a player who spent 2 years on our list and had to swap SANFL clubs owing to poor form, anyone who thought he was going to deliver Buddy like antics was sadly mistaken...

If Schulz played 50 odd games for us contributing 1-3 goals a game as a lead up forward then really he has performed exactly as we expected surely?

TBH that's more than I expect from him.

Alfie's father was on 5AA. He initially came on as a caller and asked Cornsie how he did it having hated Port all his life to having 2 sons play for them? They then soon cottoned onto the fact it was Alfie's dad. Cornsie basically told him to surrender to it.

Now if it was legitimate, mmmmm, Alfie senior better get used to seeing his boy play for Port - because the alternative was Alfie was not going to be picked up by any other AFL club! And Port had the foresight to pick him in the rookie draft.

Don't bite the hand that feeds you Alfie senior....

In the tradition of Star Wars, he needs to "surrender to the dark side" (or words to that effect). :)

I just dont understand why the **** he would ring up and ask that. I mean, who does he think he is honestly. I heard it and I thought to myself (as g.cornes would say) STFU

I have to say, that was my first reaction also (hence my none too subtle hint on not biting the hand that feeds you....). I dont think the club would be pleased if they knew also that Alfie senior had rung a media outlet, even if it was initially incognito.....

A goal with his first kick in AFL, and 2 in the first quarter. This kid is special.

How the hell did he fall to us in the rookie draft?

Great first game from Hitchy. Even though his two goals came in the first quarter, I thought he kept trying the whole game.

The two times I have seen him, against the Bulldogs and today, he has rushed a few shots at goal when he had a bit more time than he thought, and missed. I think once he has played a few more senior games he will start to settle and get the feel for when he has a bit more time.

I think he will be a real gun player, reminds me of Milne. Also seems a good long shot on the run too.

Love this kid! :thumbsu:

Was pretty good. Went missing a bit after but you cant expect too much in his first real game. Kicked 2 goals so im happy for him.

Whats more ironic is that Cornesy was talking about how he hates Port Adelaide for all the reasons of the last 140 years, yet apparently the PAFC are a new club :confused::confused:
