I bet no one has thought of this: if “Orange” telco were to make a comeback and become the sponsor on the clash guernsey!

Picked up an Essendon training singlet with this logo on the back from the op shop for $2 :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Any idea what year it might be? I was thinking 2003.

Like this one? This 2001 and was used for 2002 as well. By 2003 Orange had been bought by 3.

In 2003, players had different coloured 3 logos on their jumpers. From 04 to 08, it was always a light blue logo.
Ah there you go!
I always remembered it differently.

Does yourself or Mero know why in 2003 they had different colours, how they decided who got what colour, what the rules on that are and what the retails had?

The 3 logo was like an animated gif that changed colour
To replicate that they had the logo on the jumpers in all the various colours
The next year they decided it was a stupid idea to begin with and went to one colour logos

Just looking up old images of 2003, it is different!

I remember how much of a ball buster it was working for '3' when the ever changing '3' signs stopped scrolling through colours in store.

The 3 sponsors all being different colours was one of my first instances of taking note of footy jumpers.

That and the fact Essendon and the Australian cricket team both had Orange then switched to 3 at the same time.

I know they're independent companies in Europe, or were or whatever, but they seemed to have the same lineage here? Did 3 just buy Orange's infrastructure or did another company just own the rights here, then decided 3's would be better?

Hutchison Telecommunications had the rights to licence the Orange brand back in the 2000s, they ran the '3' and Orange networks side by side before dropping Orange, moving solely towards '3' and eventually forming VHA (Vodafone Hutchison Australia) later down the track.

Big writeup around spectrum rights here, always interesting to read as VHA had a massive chunk of the 2100MHz network from years go, but have only recently re-farmed that spectrum to use as their 4G network.
