You don't need to salary dump unless you are desperate for the cap space so you can either
A) trade for bigger needs OR
B) get under the TPP limit

With so many still OOC at Carlton, they'll have the brains to manage their spending and remain under the cap. It doesn't sound like they're making any big plays this off-season, and if they traded Williams they might save 500k-600k (doubt any club would take on the full salary) which you can't do a great deal with in the open market these days. Williams is overpaid but he's a solid player and clearly best 22.

Fairly confident we won't be looking to go down this path.

Williams was looking very good through the preseason prior to going down with injury. We're not desperate to move him or his salary on at all.

Also not sure we are "needing salary cap to retain players" given we've signed all our major OOC players. Which out of contract players will we be desperate to retain, and which of them will command significant dollars in order to do so?

Obviously it's been a disaster so far for the Blues, but at this point we're pot-committed and just have to see what we can salvage. He's still a quality player and would really add something to the side. Hopefully he's fit in 2024 and adds another element to a side that seems to be going places. Quick HBF with odd midfield bursts would be useful for Carlton right now, I think,

If it’s not viable it’s not viable. From the outside it seemed like he wasn’t needed/can’t stay on the park, and it might be worth pay to free up potentially $2.7m of cap. So I asked the question.

Sounds like Carlton fans are happy to keep him.

It’s closer to 800 than 900. But that is besides the point.
As he was signed as a free agent his contract can’t be adjusted or extended to kick money down the road. He has to be paid as per the deal signed due to the rules of compensation picks.
This is what Brisbane nearly got into trouble for with Joe Daniher the other year.

All that aside, Carlton have already signed majority of the players that were OOC at the start of this year, and have most of their bigger players signed to long term deals. So they have a fair idea of where their cap is at.
The few that are left are the injury prone could be players that will most likely be signing shorter term deals whilst they try to establish long term fitness. (Marchbank, Cunners, Philp)

I don’t think this has even entered Austin’s thoughts tbh. Deal was slightly front ended so it’s closer to the 750 mark next year. Still a lot but I reckon the club thinks he’s the cream on top next year with regards to a backline that has been performing really well already, he really could take things to the next level back there.

Docherty Weitering McGovern
Williams Marchbank Saad

Very solid backline with heaps of run and drive. Marchbank the only question mark. I would say they are better off keeping him

no one knows a salary cap dump deal coming until it happens, who knew about the bowes deal before it got leaked, same with tralor and stevenson. if a williams deal do happen, think it be more closer to tralor than bowes.

The Cats somehow knew, mysteriously, just after Hocking moved there having previously been the AFL GM of Football - who would have access to all the salaries of all the teams.

There is a reason why many professionally run companies put restrictions on senior people going to competitors.

lol sure I mean they also forced jack bowes to choose to go to geelong. He clearly wanted to go to either essendon or hawthorn but got told nope you have to go to geelong.

They knew the deal to offer GCS to get them out of the cap issues they were in. They didnt force anyone to move. They just used the knowledge. The AFL also let them pay him the same amount that GCS were going to pay but spread out over extra years. So they didnt even take on his contract.

They really didnt care about Bowes. They knew they had cap space and went for pick 7. If Bowes ends up being an average player thats a bonus.

you still dont get it, they can offer any kind of deals they want, is not up to GC or Gee, if the player doesnt want to go they cant do anything. Essendon and Hawthorn had a shot at him during the trade window, they could have easily convice the guy to choose them.

nervermind.

GCS had to accept whatever they got offered. They had literally zero choice which is why they swapped pick 7 and a player for a future 4th. They needed him off the books.

Bowes decided he didnt want to stay at a club which was happy to dump him because they couldnt pay him what they had offered. He said he wanted to go to Geelong because they contacted him 1st.

So... having that knowledge about GCS's salary cap issues helped Geelong a fair bit, no ?

If the cats truly wanted Bowes and could smooth out his salary then why did Gold Coast have to add pick 7 to the deal? Why did the afl say a second had to go back then accepted a future fourth. The whole thing stunk to high heaven but we know the AFL make it up as they go along and because we all go and watch regardless there is 0 accountability.

And you have what evidence of this? Let me guess......
