I'm pretty sure he was going to mention Pittonet. He was fairly glowing in his praise of Pitto during On The Couch the other night, and was talking about it like it was a bit of a "left field" observation. So going by the way his demeanor is in that clip, I'd reckon he was going to talk about the same thing with Bucks.Who was the other player Lyon was referring to?
A Paul Roosesque moment. That’s what I wanted to know too. They just totally forgot about it and didn’t go back to it.
Probably me, I’ve been huge across the first couple of rounds.Who was the other player Lyon was referring to?
He fit our need and was expected to be picked around where we were picking so it was a right place right time kind of deal. We needed an inside mid and he was expected to be picked just outside the top 10 right where we were picking so it wasn't like we'd done something special that no one expected.I'm going to say something slightly controversial re Cripps. If clubs can't be held responsible for absolutely every player they draft who doesn't make it, perhaps the opposite is also true. Maybe the person who said "that bloke can't run" had a point at the time, I'm just glad we weren't overthinking it too much that particular time.
could you possibly print is Article out in this thread and don't have access to that newspaperFurther to the above, even we had doubts about him,
Cripps wasn't in AFL shape, to the point that Carlton's then chief executive Greg Swann, sighting the unflattering form of the future champion at the future Marvel Stadium, asked his (then) recruiting manager Shane Rogers: "Are you sure you want to draft that fat bloke?''
Tall story: the journey of Patrick Cripps
The farm boy who has grown from the smallest player in his team to the AFL's biggest midfielder and from draft-camp dawdler to being a part of conversations about who is the league's best player.www.theage.com.au
Yeah. Had you in my top 5 for sure.Probably me, I’ve been huge across the first couple of rounds.
Massive contribution.
Ive needed the 10 day break let me tell ya.

I am not so sure about this. Cripps was expected to go around mid 20s when the season finished. It was rumours Rogers was keen that pushed him up in the phantoms before the draft. It was another reach by Rogers after the Bootsma fiasco the year before and the Boekhurst one the year after - 2 guys that should have been taken in the rookie draft. The expected pick for Carlton was McCarthy. In the clip above Buck talks how Rendell said Carlton stuffed up the pick because he couldn't run.He fit our need and was expected to be picked around where we were picking so it was a right place right time kind of deal. We needed an inside mid and he was expected to be picked just outside the top 10 right where we were picking so it wasn't like we'd done something special that no one expected.
I'd love to claim it as a draft steal or our genius that found him, but we got lucky with him. I think something in his mindset changed once joining the AFL and perhaps playing a year or so with Judd taught him a lesson in professionalism as he even mentions that he probably didn't prepare the best in his first year or indeed his junior career, carrying what he calls "puppy fat" around.
Also having a ridiculous growth spurt and growing what, 10cm or so after being drafted (?), helps to alleviate those physical limitations. Also him hiring a sprinting coach in an off-season early on seems to have been a gamechanger for him.
We got lucky with the Cripps pick. It was the expected pick for us at the time, but no one thought he'd be what he has become.
The phantom drafts by people such as Cal Twomey are a reflection on the gossip in the industry based on discussions with recruiters and are unbelievably accurate. They change significantly in the last month despite no information from on the field. Cripps was a bolter on the back of Carlton being all over him.I thought the same but I looked back a year or 2 ago to find support for that belief but found most phantom drafts had us taking him with our pick.
I deleted my post as I misread what you said. The phantom drafts by people such as Cal Twomey are a reflection on the gossip in the industry based on discussions with recruiters and are unbelievably accurate. Was in the bottom 11% of the draft class so seems like it is pretty terrible relative to being an AFL mid.Sub 12 minute 3km isn't terrible. Sure it isn't elite or fantastic, but it isn't woeful either.
I'd be happy with 20min for 3km.Sub 12 minute 3km isn't terrible. Sure it isn't elite or fantastic, but it isn't woeful either.
I’d be happy to run 3km.I'd be happy with 20min for 3km.
Nah it is pretty woeful but from memory would have been off the back of a broken leg . Josh Kelly ran a 9.32 so he is nearly 2 laps behind in 3kms. Still not quiet as bad as Rayner or Constables 8min plus 2 kms.Sub 12 minute 3km isn't terrible. Sure it isn't elite or fantastic, but it isn't woeful either.
It's woeful for an AFL midfielder or even a wannabe AFL midfielder. Like, there are average blokes playing ammos who can do sub 12. An weekend warrior runners.Sub 12 minute 3km isn't terrible. Sure it isn't elite or fantastic, but it isn't woeful either.
