So I've had the chance to go to Carlton's last two games, so I've seen them recently. To me I think their back line is vulnerable with Jamison out. Their forward line is potent with Walker moving down there this year. But to me Murphy has stepped up this year which has helped Judd alot.

The way I see it is if you suffocate their midfield to win the game. West Coast did this by playing Scott Selwood to suffocate Judd and running Shuey off Murphy.

Richmond missed ALOT of tackles early and Carlton run over the top of them from there.

The matchups I'd like to see is Picken to Murphy to suffocate him then play Boyd head to head with Judd. I would like to see Cross run with Judd but I don't reckon he'll have the leg speed.

What are other peoples thoughts??

Agreed. Maybe give dalhaus a crack as we know he will give 100% or gilbee as hopefully he could snag a few to keep him honest.

Dahlhaus to shut down Yarran, I like that a lot. Yarran is Carlton's version of Harry O'Brien. He sets up most of the Blues thrusts forward. Stop him, we stop Carlton's run...

Yeah I agree, I havnt been watching much Carlton but Yarran is playing defence right? Dahlhaus to Yarran, or maybe even Schoey to come in and play as an annoying little goalsneak while keeping Yarran honest, in the videos of him u18s he has a nice shot at goal.

Picken to Murphy

I think give Ward the job on Judd if not just have Boyd go head to head

Morris will probably get Walker

We will probably need another ruck this week, so bring in Roughead (who had a good game today apparently, kicked 3 or 4) and try to exploit their backline, Hall/Jones/Grant with Roughead resting down there is going to be hard to match up on.

As slow as Hall and Gia may be Jones, Grant, and Dahl are all fast, and offer good defensive pressure (well depending on how Grant wants to play, but he was pretty good at it friday night) so I dont think we will be too top heavy with that forward line.

Who do you think will play on Gibbs?

Who do you think will play on Gibbs?
If Gibbs plays forward again, Robert Murphy might be a good match up with his ability in the air and on the decek.

Carlton will have to watch Higgins who played a Yarran role against Melbourne and smashed it. Jet. Might sub Russell to give Houlihan a full game and have him playing his negating role on Higgins.

Laidler - Grant
Thornton - Jones
Henderson - Hall

Assuming Morris to Betts and Picken to Murphy the most important concerns are Gartlett and Judd, we dont have a suitable match up for those. Playing Boyd to Judd head to head is a guaranteed loss for us, he will need to play a completely defensive tagging role on him.

Would Gibbs go to Gia? He has played a fair few defensive roles this year.

Our Backs
Wood - Walker (Wood is our most athletic backman)
Williams - Kreuzer (only real choice in terms of height)
Murphy - Garlett (Kind of player Murph does well on - small bodied)
Morris - Betts (put the glove on him and watch him squirm)
Markovic/Barlow - Waite (Marko first option with Barlow as back-up)
Higgins - they may tag him with Cade Simpson or Gibbs

Our Forwards
Hall - Henderson (a worry for them)
Gia - Russell (Gia can struggle on more athletic backs and JR is hitting form)
Jones - Laidler (50/50 but Jones has good size)
Grant - Thornton (solid but Grant too quick)
Dahlhaus - Carrazzo - (Carazzo should win on experience but Dahl a handfull)
Roughead (if played would be the worst match up for the Blues as they lack tall defenders)

Our Mids
Free for all apart from Picken on Murphy. We must rely on Boyd, Ward Cooney, Giffen, and Cross getting first hands on the ball and into the forward line where we hope to take advantage of our height.

Simpson doesn't tag, and we don't really play a lot of close match-ups. Usually it is target their best tall forward, target their playmaker out of defence (typically with a Houlihan, sometimes Gibbs or Carazzo), send Carazzo to their best outside, Ellard to their best inside and Gibbs to the most dangerous player in general. 5 players max who specifically will seek out their opponents. The rest is more about teammates covering for eachother and general pressure.

Hope that clears things up regarding how we are likely to come into this match. Good luck

Boyd has gone HH against Judd last few years and I would say they have been about even it is an obvious matchup, murphy has been rhe one that has killed us as picken has struggled on him, that matchup and griffen carrazzo are the pivotel ones

Cross Will goto shutdown role on judd which will be a good role for him seeing as both are quite similar.

Judd would dominate Cross unfortunately. Boyd will go head to head with Judd.

If Picken struggles against Murphy (although he has been in good tagging form these last couple of weeks), and Murphy starts to get the better of us, who could we switch to him?

Agree with most of this except for the following;
  • Barlow cannot play on Waite....insufficient pace or agility. Markovic really our only option.
  • Wouldn't be surprised if they played Robinson on Higgins. Not sure Higgins handles agression well and Robinson would make him accountable
  • As much as I'd love to see an in form Roughy come into the side, I worry that we would lose the defensive element of our forwardline we have seen more of in the last couple of weeks. I think the MC will stick with Hudson and Jones as the back-up.
  • Yarran is a key for the Carlton defence. Dalhaus would be interesting but I wonder if Addison might be brought in for this role after his good form with Willi. Would lack the pace but his agressiveness would be useful. Just a thought.

Picken has to play on Murphy and I would put Ward head to head with Judd.....with Boyd or Cross giving him some assistance at stoppages.

Gibbs v Griffen
Robinson v Cooney
Carrazzo v Boyd
Henderson v Hall
Ellard v Gia

- Need to find someone to play a defensive fwd role on Yarran, maybe Gilbee
- Higgins and Ward need to do some damage this week through the middle with no obvious defensive jobs. Simpson and Scotland likewise for them.
- I think we could stretch their defense with Roughy down there, don't see a tall back option for him, maybe Thornton.
- Gee the Blues are quick, need to make sure we don't go in too top heavy. I would be tempted to go in unchanged. Roughy or another goalkicker the only options, maybe Vesz for Hooper. I don't see a role for Hooper, needs to be dangerous but don't think he ever will be, hope I'm wrong.

In: Roughy, Vesz
Out: Barlow, Hooper

B: Morris Marko Wood
HB: Murphy Williams Higgins
C: Ward Boyd Griff
HF: Cooney Jones Gilbee
F: Roughy Hall Gia

In this situation we need two of Picken to stop Murphy and Judd. This is the problem with Cross as once the stoppage is over he will struggle to help stop Carltons run and spread and no one is better at it than Judd.

A fit Cooney could go head to head but unfortunately that is not a option with a half fit Cooney. Maybe rotate Boyd and Cooney onto Judd.

Cooney won't escape a tag anyway. Even half-fit, he's still too damaging to be left alone.

Carrazzo won't play on Dahlhaus.
Ellard won't go to Gia.
Laidler more likely to go with Grant and Thornton to Jones.

Some bad blood between Robinson and Cooney from an off field altercation should make things interesting.

Robinson will try to nullify Boyd's impact.
Carrazzo to run with Griffen.
Russell to Gia.
Houlihan to play his usual HF defending role on R Murphy, maybe Higgins.
Gibbs could then go with Higgins/Murphy and create play from HF.
Ellard may get the role to try and keep Cooney quiet.

I agree with all your matchups really out side of the Grant/Jones matchups. I think thortin will go to Jones and Laidler Grant purely cause of Jones better contested marking ability requiring a taller player.

I also think Yarran and Scotland have been left out of your matchups. I would not be surprised to see gilbee have a defensive forward job again like he did against the pies but on scotland this time.
