I came to the same thought this morning. I wouldn't go as far as to say as the AFL did something like this on purpose. It would just be a nice little side benefit.
BS everyone would have been well on top of it. If us lackies can think of it you better believe they all would have.
If the release wasn't included by Essendon to cover this situation, its because the AFL either couldn't (don't have the power to) or wouldn't do it.

Has anyone pointed out that ASADA doesn't "prepare" infraction notices. ASADA hands out infraction notices. They don't wait for illegal reports on governance to finish, they go whack as soon as they have any evidence.

Agree. I think that the AFL were probably not aligned with the ASADA timetable. If this report is true, it may be that ASADA shared their timetable with the AFL and since the report and recommendations were not going to be ready until after the finals, the AFL decided that they needed to get Essendon out of the finals. The AFL requested that ASADA provide them with an interim report so they could charge them with something (after spending the entire year suggesting they were going to wait until the END of the investigation). Clearly ASADA were not going to change the timeline of their investigation to suit the AFL.

Got to love the transparency of the AFL. Of course this is just speculation but it does kind of fit. The AFL should have supported ASADA in any way that was requested of them but other than that they should have got out of ASADA's way while they investigated. This whole thing seems like Vlad is confusing himself as a person skilled in the art of diplomacy......again. Now everything just seems to be compromised. The AFL sure are correct to be strengthening their ethics team - I just hope they know where to start!!

Kevin Bartlett said on SEN that the person who wrote the article is currently in London.

She got poached by one of the UK papers to cover the Olympics in London (and perhaps the winter Olympics before it). Seems she may be back now writing for the Australian? Could be still in the UK and may well have better information from over there given that all of these national bodies clearly talk to each other.

She's also got a long history of writing about drugs scandals in Australia and won a Walkley for doing just that. She would definitely have decent sources.

I'm not commenting on the accuracy or otherwise but this isn't one where you can dismiss the Journo.

Don't make me start liking Carlton supporters..... please don't. This saga has been stressful enough already....

If infraction notices come, I'll be using my membership to a) vote the entire board out and b) support the entirely new football department after the mass sackings/resignations.

You won't need to do a thing if players are found guilty and banned. if that happens everybody loses their job/position. I expect some infraction notices, I think the afl anti doping tribunal will find the players not guilty. The AFL then gets what Evans and co decided on early, Club to cop it and the players are spared.

While it's hard to imagine how I'd react in the same situation, I'd be approaching it as a "taking my club back from the instigators" thing. The club is bigger than any individual. Cut out the cancer, accept there will be a lot of pain, but support the club. The club belongs to the members, hell it is the members. You're not guilty, only the people who put you in this position are.
*No assumptions of guilt implied.*
Regardless of what does or doesn't happen with ASADA from here on in, I've decided to vote for a change of Chairman at election time.

I'm still considering the best way to support the players without validating the club and its complete lack of respect shown to its members.

If players get done, illegal performance enhancing drugs would have been administered at some point.
Since our doctor just got off, and AOD got cleared yet again, I'd say we are fine. It would have to be New evidence

I'm with Jade. I'm going to find it hard justifying paying a membership fee that will go towards paying off a fine, let alone if players miss huge chunks of football. One day I'm relieved it's over, the next this ... **** it all.

Opposition supporters: Read the last part of the thread title, and understand it. If you overstep the line, it won't end well for you.

Suddenly picturing doss as Heisenberg whilst saying that. Cheered me up

Let's make the very grand assumption that infraction notices are issued to players.

I'll still love the club (can't turn that off), but I can't just go on and continue to empty the wallet (so to speak) for the club.

I can't speak for everyone, but my personal contributions to the club would amount to ~$1500-2000 a year through membership, player sponsorship, events, donations etc etc.

So, and keeping in mind the assumption made, I've been a 'good little supporter' and you've taken my small contribution and used it to inject young men entrusted to your care with substances that at best have wrecked their careers, and at worst damaged their health.

No. **** you. You won't get a cent more from me.

To Jade and others feeling the same way today. I can't begin to know how you feel and hope I never do but supporters like you (and Lance & Mxett) are the ones that the club most needs. Your club has a long and proud history so don't throw it all away now cause of the actions of a few.

Assuming no guilt, but if infraction notices are handed out, then there needs to be a clean out of all involved by supporters like yourselves not just those who blindly follow. I have thrown my completely useless support behind the 2 above to take over the running of your club and get them back to where they belong (2 places below the hawks on the ladder).

Now as today is ye most holly day of ye year, it be a good time to drink grog and go wenching to cheer ya self up.

Could it be that the AFL removed all cheating charges against the club such that they will not enter into a double jeopardy type situation? They have punished us for governance, if ASADA recommend infraction notices they can then hammer us on doping charges?

I had a whole different reply typed up before that thought popped into my head and it made me feel sick. I wouldn't put it beyond the AFL.

I don't know how the AFL could do it and submit to the WADA code.

I hear you Jade, but it's not the clubs fault. We've been screwed and screwed again by the AFL. Take your anger out on them.

Hang on, if we are issued infraction notices, how the hell is that the AFL's fault?

If they are issued, people at the club have to take responsibility, simple as that. To ignore the problem and blame it on other irrelevant circumstances solves absolutely nothing.

From memory, the the final AFL charges included the possibility that we may have taken performance-enhancing drugs. I'm not worried about any double jeopardy from the AFL in regards to further sanctions outside of the infraction process.

Yes. The direction of my anger depends on one tiny little thing - proved infraction notices that says our players were doped.

Starting to spread everywhere. No new info, all based on the report.

I'm going to leave for awhile, goodluck to everyone, wait for full info and I'll chat to you all in a few weeks.

Did any of you guys hear the interview with the new sports minister on 774 ABC? Apparently he said that he had received a briefing on this from ASADA. Would love to know exactly what the question was that he was answering; general or specific to the infraction report. From the quotes in this article I dont think we can infer much. Obviously if he received a briefing from ASADA about the infractions then there is trouble brewing. Alternatively, he may have been talking about a briefing on the investigation in which case this says nothing at all.

He was talking (the sports minister) that he'd have to review things before the election, could just be following up on that a little,

Essendon Football Club would like to make the following statement in response to an article in The Australian newspaper today which referenced ASADA’s investigation of the club.

Interim CEO Ray Gunston said “The club understands that there is no factual basis to the story in relation to the issuing of infraction notices at this point in time.”

Due to the ongoing nature of the ASADA investigation the club will not be making any further comment.

They've probably have been "preparing" the notices for a while, now they're just fumbling around to try to put some names on them in time for the coalition government budget forecast. **** them.
