Isn’t the point of mid season pickups is that they shouldn’t need full pre season to show something and can make an immediate impact?

That said he may never even get to do a full pre season with us either.

No. That's rarely the case. Most clubs now use it to pick up younger players who slipped through the draft last year or might go in the draft this year, just getting 6 months early.
