Good friend of mine worked at Centrelink years ago way before I met them (I'm thinking 15 years ago or so)

Got into it with a genuine naive belief they would be able to help people

KPIs were so brutal (6 mins max for phone calls etc etc - rarely enough time to work out what people needed) and the culture was horrible - they didn't last long

Can only imagine how much worse it would be now

Dont know what its like elswhere but it's still hard for employers to find workers in WA at all levels, skilled or unskilled.
I'd compare rental prices and property prices. WA more or less expensive than eastern states?

It’s not so much expense as availability. Companies in my town are buying houses so they have somewhere for workers hired from elsewhere to live.

Cost to move there. Reasons to move away.
We're moving back to Adelaide in a fortnight.

Paying 750pw here ( 40 min drive to the CBD )
Be paying 770pw in Adelaide ( 20 min to drive anywhere lol )

Colorado ski towns in the US seem to have similar issues. Queenstown in NZ as well. Italian towns as well. Lots of short stay investors buy up the cheap flats.

I was in Queenstown for hols a couple of years ago - it’s a rich folks climate change bolthole now.

Was speaking to some ordinary minimum wage folks there and they either live in bunks 8 to a bedroom or live 50km out of town and car pool commute in people movers.

NZ is not what I expected. It has a very stratified life where your ordinary bloke can’t get ahead.

In my field a business owner who charges the same money as me for his crews labour pays less than half what I pay and 1/5th of what that same guy would get on the mines in wa.

No wonder they all want to move here.

Luckily for these workers they just voted in a conservative party who will sort this out by... denying the Treaty of Waitangi?
