I’ll bite, what the * does this have to do with anything? Essendon fans are allowed to have opinions without this irrelevant insight being used to deflect (including my opinion earlier in the thread that said wingard was worth persisting with)

Pull your head in
Poster had a crack at Wingard for apparently fading late season, I pointed out that this isn't true. The crack at Essendon's finals record was just a bit of extra flavour.

Lol Owies.

Please don't mention that name and Wingard in the same breath. Even a cooked Wingard is three times the player Owies will ever be.

I hope we sign Wingard on for another season but I wonder if Port would take him back for a fairy tale crack at a flag.
I reckon it’s the only place he would go outside of Melbourne.

It took a lot for him to uproot and leave SA, which is why he never entertained heading to the Giants when they came knocking in 2021.

His post match comments yesterday about 2024 sound like he’s very invested but you couldn’t blame him if he wanted to finish off back home.

How much coin $ would he have been on this year? If it's Achilles, arguably career ending at his age, he'll probably get a payout equiv to what he earnt this year - probably more than what he would have earnt from the Hawks for a 1 year deal next year anyways.

Still a shit way to go out.

Could Hawthorn sign him to a 2 year deal and put him on the long term injury list so he doesn't take up a spot?

Could, but the question is 'why would'

He’s finishing up the contract he got when crossing from Port, so it won’t be small. Anywhere between $600-800 you’d think.

I think we may offer him 12 months, on a reduced contract as cap space isn’t really a concern for us, but will understand if we don’t.

In that case he might get a decent payout from the AFL\the fund for 2024. Doesn't come from your cap. Swanny did the same thing at the Pies. Similar money but take the year off.

Or we give a 2 year contract. Minimal base and big games fee so he only gets paid if we play him.

Not sure i want us doing that, even on a base contract it is dead cap space for a player who will not be playing for 12 months, another year older, no guarantee to even be best 22 that year.

I feel for him but i think we should part ways at the end of the year.

Cap space could be $80k when we have $1m spare. List space is the issue. But if we can LTI and elevate a Rookie then its not an issue.

It also tells the players and potential suitors we will take care of them. Goodwill alone is worth it.

What good will have we ever gotten back from players? I have heard about this both with players and list managers and it never seems to come to anything.

Cap space and list space is both valuable. Wasting it on a player who will not play for 12 months and fairly likely to never have a future as a player is not worth it.

Confirmed torn Achilles for Chad Wingard. Met with a specialist this morning. Set for surgery this week. Facing 9-12 months on the sidelines. More on @AFLcomau -

I would like the club to give him a yr's contract and put him on LTI if Chad is fine with it. He can assist club in many other ways.

Missed on vision earlier, this was it

I believe his manager and the club are working on a contract for next year. Will wait to see if it gets done.

So inactive next year

Then 32 in 2025 when fit, realistically how many games would he even play then and it would be his final year you’d imagine

So essentially giving him 2 years to play a handful of games in 2025

It’s unfortunately probably time to call it

Interesting one because really if you want him playing again he will need a 2 year contract.

Maybe a single year deal with a trigger of some kind for the second year?
I guess it would need to be.
At this point it’s probably fine that we use a bit of our cap on a player that brings a lot off the field, even if they don’t play 22 games.

I was wondering about this.

Player has a serious work related injury that likely restricts earning capacity and is out of contract.

How is that delt with ifnot re-signed and his AFL career ends?

Has to be some form of workers compensation payout / safety net.

I think it is not a bad PR for the club to look after him, and try to nurse him back to playing .

1. We can afford to given where the list is, and the salary cap position we will be in for the next period of time. A vet minimum for sure
2. It tells potential FA's that they will be looked after by the club regardless of unfortunate circumstance. Great message to send for the 28 and overs in coming years.
