It may have been mentioned previously but the 3 champions that left MFC for other teams were:
Barassi-to Carlton
Wells to Carlton
Alves to North
whilst McLean has left to go to Carlton- I do not rate him a champion and hopefully he never becomes one now

Laurie Sandilands (Footscray / Collingwood)
Ian Low (Footscray / Collingwood)
Ron Andrews (Essendon / Collingwood)
Warwick Irwin (Fitzroy / Collingwood)
Geoff Raines (Richmond / Collingwood)
David Cloke (Richmond / Collingwood)
Paul Hawke (Sydney / Collingwood)
Greg Smith (Sydney / Collingwood)
Ray Byrne (Carlton / Collingwood)
John Williams (Essendon / Collingwood)

Spot the trend ? We tried everything in the '70s and '80s and still came up short ......

A few extras to add from the same era -and to prolong the agony!

Graeme Teasdale (Brownlow at South/zip at Collingwood)
George Bisset (Champ at Dogs/gave us a couple of decent years)
Sam Kekovich (North premiership hero/1 game for us in '77)
Barry Mitchell (Sydney champ/ Collingwood chump)
Glenn McLean (promising young Melbourne ruck -cost us a fortune (went to court) -dud)
Allan Davis (St Kilda premiership team/magpie dud)
Geoff Woolnough (Geelong/Collingwood)
Ian Low (Footscray/Collingwood)

those from other clubs that probably played their best footy at collingwood:

Craig Davis (+ Carlton, North & Sydney)
Russell Ohlsen (+ Carlton)
Allan Edwards (+ Richmond, Footscray)

We must have been the 'greenest' team of the 70's and 80's -recycle to the max!

Paul Salmon is an interesting one. He was a champ at Hawthorn and came out of retirement for a short stint at Essendon, but that was his second go with the Dons.
Paul Salmon played 13 seasons at Essendon before he moved to Hawthorn (for 5 years) and then went back to Essendon for one more season

Terry Daniher yet to be mentioned. 19 games at South Melbourne before moving to Essendon to Captain 2 flags.

You forgot Graeme Atkins

John Barnes is another one. Had a short stint at Essendon, then moved to Geelong, played for 7 or 8 seasons, then went back to Essendon in time to play in the 2000 premiership.

Wasn't Milne a reserves player at Essendon too? Don't know if that counts though.

Yeah, think he kicked 4 or so in the 99(?) reserves premiership. Wasn't on our list though - maybe a rookie or similar. StKilda drafted him the next year.

A couple of handy players in Jason Saddington and Greg Tivendale played in the Melbourne reserves as top-up players in 1997.

Greg 'Diesel' Williams- Had a short stint at Geelong before becoming a champion at Carlton and Sydney.
Andrew Bews- Played most of his career at Geelong before spending a little bit of time with the Bears.
Wayne Carey- Obvious one.
